These fraternal inter- changes are much more likely to en- gender peace than bode war, THE big Conservative Convention announced to be held next June has been called off in the meantime. Both parties are evidently playing a wait- ing game to steal the other fellow's .,,powder and thereby do a good deal toward spiking their opponents' guns. HON. Mn. 1.TLESWORTH, Minister of Justice in the. Dominion Cabinet, may go tothe Hague and be succeeded at Ottawa by Mr. Clark, M. P., for South Essex, a well known and clever lawyer, of Windsor. The first men- tioned gentleman is said to have no special love for the political arena. Guess he was not caught young enough. START a `Boost Club" for your block and see the advantage it will be to all concerned. A good example is worth a greatdeal and in unity there Ta strength. Many a town might be easily beautified by everybody doing their share toward itand by a spirit of heartiness many another, perhaps slower in the move, emulates his more enthusiastic neighbor. Brussels has numerous beauty spots but they can be easily increased. In several laces we notice tice that the Women's In- stitute, and the Horticultural and Agricultural Societies have joined the boosters with good effect. ^--felts and June will see many as- semblages in various church gather- ings, such as rfpresbyteries, district meetings, conventions, synods, con- ferences and assemblies. There is no lack of machinery but there is room for manyt more men e and women to help sow the seed and Harvest the crop. The unit rather than the ag- gregate is the moving power and in these busy times it may be an easy matter to give the most important duties second place. Success is much more likely to follow the individual effort than an undisciplined combine-. tion. 1 : 1N another 'column may be read a fakir'svictory in St. Marys. The idea of soft headed people re- sponding to an appeal from a pere- grinating deadbeat for dollars "to dry the tears of his little wife who was crying at Sb, Louis for a new hat" seems ridiculous and yet such was the. case but when the fellow sold them. gold watches worth nerhans $1,50 for $10 or $15 he was certainly adding in- sult to injury, Old P. '•Is there a man in this audience who will lend me two dollars or five d •llars to help buy my dear little wife a Fluffy Ruffles hat," showed a takir at the Town Hall last Thursday evening and he got his answer right off the bat, for several men produced the sums mentioned from the recesses of their pockets with sur- prising celerity. But the whole story bad better be told as it happened and this is how it hap- pened. Last Thursday a trio of strangers struck town and posted up hills adver- tising a free show at the Town Hall. 'rhe bills said it was an advertising scheme when some goods would be given away and that a slight -of -hand mac would perform. There was a full house. The sleight - of -hand man did a few tricks, as prom- ised, and thou the real business of the evening 1 egan,. and that business was the "touching" of as many citizens as possible for $ro.00 each in exchange for electro plated.,band.engraved, en- gine -turned half -capped lull jewelled watches worth from one dollar to one - fifty each. When the sleight-of-hand man was through with his stunt, the curtain was drawn back and a number of small tables were disclosed loaded with bath towels, table cloths, suspenders, several trays of glittering watches and miscel- laneous articles. Then a distinguished looking gentle- man wearing a coat of the George -the - Third period, and with rallies at his neck instead of the modern collar, stepped before the footlights. He was a benevo- lent looking personage and his flow of talk was beautiful to hear. He told his auditors that he was distributing some goods by way of advertising. This was a cheaper and mere effective way than spending money with newspapers and magazines he stated. First he offered a few towels at 5o cents a pair -and there were a few buy- ers. After he got the money he sent twohis satellites . t s back with 50 .cents each to the buyers of the towels And at this juncture he sent the two assist• a is down the w aisles with two shoe boxes full of bank bills -from ones up to twenties. t s. When everybody had a good look at the money be began selling towels again then tablet loths, then fountain pons, then opera glasses and as fast as the money y came to he sent it back with his compliments. Oh, he was a philanthropic gentleman. He established a line of credit in a few minutes that the ordivar mortalI v could not have acquired in a Century of plain, honest living. Then just to show how he had the confidence of those before hitt he asked for contributions to his wife's Spring hat fond, and as already stated, he got a ready response. His spiel tan sotne- thing like this. "It's Springtime, gentlemen. There's A dear little woman over in St. Louis crying her' eyes out for o11e of those dear' little Fluffy Ruffles hats.
