• J. R. Grant, of Winnipeg.
John R. Grant. of Winnipeg. is spend-
ing several days at the Empress hotel,
Victoria, B.C., on his return to this city
after having spent the greater part of
the Winter months in Los Angeles and
Pasadena. The Victoria Colonist pub-
lishes an interesting interview with the
well known Winnioegger. Referring to
his experience in California this Winter.
Mr. Grant said that the sight be was
most interested in was a trip through
the oil fields of Bakersfield. He took
this trip just prior to leaving for Victor-
ia and he said that• it was one of the
most interesting experiences he had
ever met with, Incidentally. Mr. Grant
lost a good suit of clothes, and anis is
how it Happened :
As one of a party of sightseers Mr.
Grant visi'ed the enormous gusher tap•
ped a week or so ago, which is generally
looked upon as the greatest oil gusher
In the world's history. The crude oil
was shooting 300 feet into the air and;
falling over an area, of a quarter of a
mile with a shifting wind. The day Mr.
Grant and his compouions visited' the
well was the fifth day after it was tap•
ped, rand the well was still- spouting
35,000 barrels a day, In the two days
enough of this oil was saved to pay for
the well, and the whole. district was
literally running rivers of oil. After
viewing the spout for some time, Mr.
Grant and his friends left the automo-
bile which had crept up on the lee side
of the gusher:and walked around to get
a better view. They were within 300
feet of the well when the wind suddenly
veered, taking the oil spray with it.
clothing
Immediately the of the whole
party was rendered worthless. They
were drenched in a storm of oil from
head to loot and almost suffocated be
fore they reached the outside of the.

Grant says is the biggest thing they
have,.but there is no assurance that it
will continue to be so. Many fortunes

Speaking of the many Canadians who
o
visited California this Winter Mr.
G1aut said there were at least a thous-

This led Californians to believe that
Canadians had to go South for the
Winters, but the notion was fast dissi-
pating and the cry the' Canadians gave
them now WAS that they made their

see how the people managed,
to live down there. t\s for es the
