MARRIED.
S33o0r0EEb-DA0LxnG.-At the home of the
bride, on October 185h, 1859, by Rev. Joico
Gillespie, Mr. John Shortreed to. Miss
Mary Darling both of Esquesing township,
Halton Co., Oat.
Fifty years of happy life is an honor,
that but few people are 'privileged to
enjoy and receive the cougzatula-
tioos of their children, grandchildren,
relatives and neighbors on such an
auspicious occasion. At such times.
the mind wanders away back to the
lnany green spots and the pleasing
associations of the ppast. On the 13th
day of October in the year A. D. 1859,
at the bride's home in the township
of Eaqnesing, county of Halton. Rev.
John Gillespie, minister of the U. P..
church, Mansewood, united in mar-
riage Mise Mary Darling and John
Shortreed and at the same time Sane
Darling and James Stevenson. About
a year ago Mr. Stevenson was
called away to the better land and
since then his widow has made her
home with her suns in Akron, Ohio,
U. S.. while Mr. and Mrs. Shortreed
through fifty long years of sunshine
and shadow are still spared to enjoy
each others company on the same
farm lot 19, con. 9. township of Morris,
county of Huron, to which they
moved half a century ago. Ms,
Shortreed bad previously prepared
a house for the reception of his bride.
The village of Blyth was then just
making a beginning with two or three
houses and the country around pretty
mach in its primitive state. What a
marvelous change since then. Blytb is
now a tidyflourtshingvillagesurround-
ed by fine farms with comfortable
dwellings mostly of brick or stone,.
Mr. Shortreed owns a beautiful farm
of 250 acres. The family eohsisted of
9 children, 3 of whom have been called
away, Mary, Tena and Walter. The
surviving members are: William and
Robert at home ; John jr., owns a
farm on the same con. ;• George is a
medical practitioner in Grand View,
Man. ; Mrs. Henry Scott, of Telfer,
London, Ont. ; and Mrs. G. Raped -
den, Winthrop. All in comfortable
circumstances and faithfnl members
of the U. P. church. On the evening

at the .family, residence of Mr. and
Mrs, Shortreed, the members of the
family who were available with the
relatives and a few of the near neigh-
bors by invitation to take part in the
joyous occasion. The spacious dining
room was neatly decorated with varie-
gated maple leaves. The family pre-
sented their father and mother with
an easy, chair each and the relatives
remembered them with handsome
presents. After partaking

gram consisting of , cougratalatot'y
speeches and talks of the loug ago and
of the old neighbors that had bone
the burden and heat of the day along
with Mr. Shortreed in clearing the
land. Their beautiful farms testify to
their unwearied perseverance in that
respect. 50 years has wrought many
changes. There would be but few of
the old neighbors to answer to their
names n0W. After the company had
spent a pleasant time together they
parted wishing the Bost andhostess

Church Deliverances
Nearly every religious body in Canada I

A report from the committee on tem-
perance adopted by the general Syood
of the Anglican church in Canada says :
In glancing over the several provinces'
of the Dominion, it is manifest that there
is a great concensus of opinion concern-
ing the bar under our present licensing
system, namely. that is a public menace,
and your committee would urge upon the
Synod that it is the duty ot`every man
to endeavor to further the effort to abol-
ish the bar. Until such time as the bar
is abolished it recommends : rhat full.
advantage should be.taken, ,when practic.
'n into
able of the adoption and putting
force of Local Option under the present
license law. The committee after wide
gathering of evidence from tile different
proviuces of the Dominion, report that
the Scott Act has worked out success-
fully in the Maritime Provinces' Rs has
Local Option in Ontario.
METHODIST
The report on Temperance adopted' at
the last session of the Methodist General
Conference was a forceful document, of

That the q
antagonistic to every interest of the
Church and State. That:we condemn the.
license features of all statutes by which
money is accepted for the legal'protec-
tion of an immoral traffic. That the
iceoses becomes a partner in the business
justly declared to be an enemy of God
and man. We protest against the un-
holy alliance. That righteousness
demands the extirpation of a traffic so
fruitful of corruption in every depart-
ment of Civil Government. Whilst pro-
hibition is the unchangingpurpose of the
Methodist Church we advise our people
that wherever possible, to obtain Local
Option as one of the best means of cur-
tailing the evils of the liquor traffic.
?RESEYTERIAN
A report from the Committee on Moral
and 'Social Reform adopted by the
General Assembly of the Presbyterian
church in Canada, contained these
paragraphs
'Phe Assembly would re -affirm the
deliverance of former Assemblies, that
nothing short of the prohibition of the
traffic in intoxicants for beverage pur-
poses can satisfy as the goal in temper-
ance reform, and would recommend our
people in these provinces where there
is 00 immediate prospect of carrying
and enforcing Prohibition, to unite
with others in working towards this, and
by :
(a) The curtailment Of the traffic by
local veto, -
(b) The abolishment of thebar-room
(1. e., the sale for consumption on the
premises), and the public treating system
associated thereof.
(c) The prohibition of the residue of
the traffic (that is, the sale - in shops for
consumption off' the premises), with this
provision, that where in cities and towns
the said sale is demanded by a majority
of the qualified municipal electors. such
sale shall be conducted tinder such con•
