There area number of causes of neural- : gia, but the mast common is a gen- teal run-down condition of the sys- • tem. The discovery of this fact from reliable statistics led to the new treatment for neuralgia wia.eu consists in building up the general s health by the tonic treatment and. so disposing of the cause of the trouble n Persons reduced by acute sick - nese, or by severe mental or physi- cal strain, or -by - loss, of sleep are t frequently victims of neuralgia and is aommon In the case of thUSe Q f suffering from anaemia or biood- lessness, This brings us to the.ac- tual cause of neuralgia, which hS e .nerve starvation. The blood which in nor/nal health carries to the ;nerves all of their nourishment, is _ unable to perform this duty satis- factorily when it is weak or impure. r i Build up the blood and the neural- ' pain will disappear as the .nerves become better nourished. 1 Dr. Williams' Pink Pills are a blood -making tonic, and for reason 'cure even the most obstin- ate eases of neuralgia. Every dose of this medicine makes new, rich blood, which feeds the starved veins and drives out the sharp, darting, stabbing pains of neural- gia. Mrs. John Tibert, Little ktiv era N, S., says •—"A few yearn ago I was a great sufferer from neural- gia in my head and face. At times the attacks were simply excruciat- ing, and I would be forced to 1 re plain in bad. trieii^doctors' medi- cines, but did not reeeive any,bene- fil until I began using Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, and I am happy to say that the benefit I received from these was wonderful. I may also add that Dr. Williams' Pink Pills cured :my daughter ofanaemia and indigestion, at a time when we be- gan to dispels of her getting bet- ter. I can highly recommend these Pills to anyone suffering from these troubles." You can get Dr. ,Williams' Pink Pills from any dealer in medicines or they willbe sent by mail at 50 idents a box or six boxes for $2.60 • by The Dr. Williams' Medicine Co., Brockville, Ont. WANTFUL. A woman seldom has any time to be. thankful for the things she has because of the many other things she wants. here the long jacket conceals the bare dress. The smartest thing in gloves are white glace kind, with three side strands of heavy black 'embroidery down the back. Silks which have all over figures woven into the fabric have their own special name this season. They are called Palconne. Ruffles appear on the left side of some of the otherwise tailored blouses—giving a dainty and dig- tinetly feminine touch. Pretty blouses of Japanese silk, made with Dutch collars, are list cd among the desirables belonging to the feminine wardrobe. Satin and heavy ottoman silk buttons will be in good style and twed and worsted cloth bone but tons will he considered correct. The filet of black velvet about half an inch wide, and finished with a tiny bow either in front or to one side, is seen` a great deal. For between seasons there are some beautiful black silk hats made upon frames. Hero satin and moire, ottoman and bengaline are equally conspicuous. Marquisette, which is . used for drossy blouses, launders well and has a decided air. It is gaining in popularity asthe season draws to its height. Irish crochet is seen on all the cloth and silk gowns, and insetsets of Irish crochet, large as well as small, ornament some of the waists of cotton crepe. Dancing slippers, whether of pat- ent leather or of velvet, now have several straps over the instep, each decorated in some manner with beady or tinsel. SALT AS A'MEDICINE. have in tho past seven or eight years found the advantage of put- ting a little salt in all the water drink, writes Mr, F. N. Burn, in tlhambers's Journal. I also put to little salt, with sugarand milk, in every cup of tea, coffee or eoeoa Iuse. --' I have been a resident in the tropics for over forty years, and except; for sprained ankle have not had occasion to cal] in a .doc- tor or to take any.nheditfne in the last thirty years. •1 believe every one's health in the tropics would by very much better i1 be used more salt. I find the benefit of drinking a tumbler of cold water with a lit- tle salt in it every morning on ris- ing at about 5 o'clock, before my bath or cup of cocoa, which I usu- ally take between 5.80 and 6. If people could be induced to try the easy and cheap method of tak- ing a little common salt with the water they drink, they would in the generality of eases find tliat they would seldom require other medi- cine. What this means van be faintly im- agined, when it le remembered that the largest dirgible torpedoes em- ployed up till now carry less than 200 pounds, Yet the results obtain- ed with these and others of even smaller size, have been sufficiently awful. Thus, the very first torpedo of the modern dirgible type that was ever used in warfare, which contained a bursting charge of only 60 pounds, sufficed to destroy the fine new Tun kish monitor Dai-Matsin during the ,Rnssn-Turkish War in 1877, The Japanese, during' their' last • war with China, used comparative- ' ly small torpedoes of a very simi- lar.type, Yet by their aid they suc- ceeder) in sinking the great iron- eled Ting -Yuen, the pride of the j Chinese Navy, On July 3rd, 1880, the Chilian tmnsnort Loa was destroyed in'•Cal- lao Harbor by a non-dirgible -tor- pedo concealed -in a fruit boat, whichcarried a bdrsting charge of 'RC pounds of dynamite. This was the b'igrest quantity that up till then had been used in naval war- fare, and the effect was terrible. Not only was the Loa herself blown to bits, with the loss of 160 men out of her crew of 200, but every house in Callao was shaken to itn fneeda- tions. and the ships in the harbor rocked to and fro as from an earth- quake shnck. • Perhaps, however, the most strilr- ing-example of what can he accom- plished by a heavy charge of high explosive fired in close contact to au ironelad's bottom. was afforded by the destruction o fthe Petr" -sty-. levsk drying the Rnssn-Jananene Wnr. This splendid vessel was the flnaship of the Russian Admiral Mstkaroff, and was first-class in 'ev- ery resneet.--`Yet she was blown up and sunk with the greatest wise by tt contact mine containing 500 lbs. of dynamite. The manner in which poultry is dresseddetermines largely the pride. it will bring in market. All ill, looking specimens, ragged and torn, will be passed by for a bet- ter appearing bird by nine people, outof ten, even though the hard- looking specimen may in reality be a larger and fatter bird. It is not a hard matter to dress them to loot neat, and as the price is what all growers are after it' pays to do the work ,well. The bird should have had access to neither :food nor water for twenty-four hours, and should be caught carefully so as not to bruise it or badly frighten it. This is eas- ily done in darkening the place where they are confined, or catch- ing with a crook, similar to the cld-time shepherd's crook, Suspend the bird, with a double- edged poultry knife cut each side of the throat to sever the jugular, then up and backward through the roof ofthemouth into the brain to destroy the sense of pain. Place a hookin lower beak, with a weight attached, and begin to pick al, the wings as these cool quickest. The breast feathers come off very easily, and there is small need of tearing.,the'ekin if care is exercised, When picked remove from hook, and, where the market requires it, out off the head end draw the skin over the stump and tie neatly, remove entrails, nutting as small a piece around the vent as possible. Where head and entrails are left simply wash all blood from the beak. Preis wings and legs close to body and tie a string around to hold them. See that feet and shanks are glean and cool them in as compact a shape as possible: This gives them a phrmp appear- ance, and they also pack for ship- ment much better. It's much easier to lay plans than to hatch them out, ATTENDED BY FIVE DOCTORS 1lUT.:1OT NO RELIEF UNTIL 11111 USE DODD'S KIDNEY PILLS, Wnitderfnl Core of A..11, Richard, Wito woe Tortured by Rheums Ileal and Iiindl'od Pains, Sets Kent County Talking. Something, to her, stands for luck—a horseshoe picked up, a four -leafed "cloverft und, a pin gathered up from the floor, a black cat straying into the house, a birth- day stone, a lucky date or number, etc. 'She believes by definite ex- amples, and in this she is usuaiy correct. What she calls luck has really come to her the very day or week in which she found the horse- shoe or put on the birthday ring. Itis not mere coincidence. It has happened as she .says. The only thing she fails to see is just why and how it has happened, says Har - per's Bazaar. The most important thing in life is one's attitude toward it. To the wrong attitude life brings nothing. To the right attitude it brings ev- erything. The blind doctrine of luck is the handmaid of this clear truth. The woman who finds a'four-leaved clover and is convinced that life holds something pleasant for her in the immediate future gets at once' into the right attitude. She looks out for something good to come along, and so she sees it and grasps it. If she hadnot found the clover and had gone dully and fretfully along instead, she would never have noticed the pleasant thing at all. That is the whole psychology of luck. It seems too simple to be tie—but really its simplicity is its sign manual of verity. Expect good, look for good, be- lieve in good—and lifo becomes good and grows ever better. WATER GAUGE BURST. C. P. R. Fireman Badly Scalded. C. P. R. fireman, Geo. H. Duffus, who lives in Robertson Street, Fort William whileO n his engine, near Westford happened with a nasty accident. The water gauge of the locomotive burst and scalded the left side of Ms face and head terribly "It so happened," said Duffus to our representative, "that I had a box of Zam-Buk in my pocket, which I used for a sore on my lip, and when I had recovered from the first shock of the accident, 1 produced the balm and had it applied freely to the scalded parts. At the time I applied it I was suffering acute agony, but within a wonderful short time Zam-Buk gave me ease. I was able to continue my journey, and upon reaching home 'I obtained more Zam-Buk and continued the treatment. . It acted wonderfully well, and in a few days had the wound nicely healing. I don't know anything so fine as a healer of burns, scalds, outs, and similar injuries which workers are so liable to; and in my opinion a box of Zam Bilk should be kept handy in every worker's home." For burns, cuts, scalds, bruises ec- zema, piles ulcers, ring -worms, itch, saltrheum, bad leg, festering sores. chapped places, cold -sores, frost. bites, and all .skin injuries and dis- eases, `Lam-Buk is beyond doubt a most marvellous pure. Study of Scissile Disturbances Halt - Ing Great Strides, The study of earthquakes is said to have been punned moat diligent- ly in Japan and in Italy. The dis- covery which led to the establish= meat of observatories, furnished with delicate instruments for re- cording distant earthquakes, was due to an accident. In 1877 a Rus - Sian astronomer noticed, while making observations with one of the levels attached to a telescope, that the bubble of the level was os- ciilating, but apparently for no rea son. Directly, however, there came ' r the news of an earthquake at Iqui- que, which had occurred an hour and. a quarter before the oscilla. tinesof the instrument; and since then it has been ascertained that this is just the time needed for the earth waves to travel the 8.000 miles between the two points. Such was the beginning, of what seems t, be now a highly developed at- tempt at the formation of a new smen0e.
