IN TRIM, :WAY.
"Grandma, do you s'pose hens
can talk?" Asked 'Alice.
"Old Speckle talked to me the
other day," said grandmother, "1
Mean she made me understand what
she wanted."
'.1111iy, grandma 1 How clid she
do it?" Ancl Alice's oyes grew big
and round,
'It was when Mr' Gray was mak-
eg the new fence,. 1 heard a noise
at the ltitelldn"door, and when I
opened it there was'Spoeklo, brist-
ling her feathers and cackling away
ap a great rate. Slie turned at
once and went around the house as
though she knew I would. follow,"
r "0 grandma!" interrupted Alice.
Dict- you V.
"Of course," said ]Ter grandmo-
ther, "She went as fast as her hen
legs could carry her down to the
fence, and when I got there I found
two of her little chickens had fallen
into a post -hole while --Mr. Gray
had gone to his dinner:"
"Wasn't it nice that you found
them?" said Alice, with a sigh of
satisfaction, "I do b'lievo- hens
can talk, if they can make people
understand them so well."
"There's the rooster coming M-
k the yard,"..said • grandmother.
"Let's watch him and se if he says
how-dy-do."
It certainly looked like it. The
old fellow stalked up to the hens,
who stood very still and seemed to
be listening with great attention.
In a minute he turned round and
went out into the lane, both hens
following him. `O, grandma,"
said Alice, "he diel say something, I
know he did! I'm going to see if 1
can find out what he told them."
"I'll go; too,'.' said grandmo-
ther, as she put down the peas.
Alice ran ahead.
"Come quick! Come quick!" she
called, as she looked into the field
on the other' side of the lame!
'They're having a party !"
Sure enough, they were having a
feast of worms. It was plainly to
be seen that the rooster had found
a quantity of them .where the
emend ,.led been freshly plowed,
and had told the hens about it.
"P'r'aps they think it is a candy -
shop," said .Alice, "and p'r'aps the
rooster is treating them, just as
Uncle Dick did :me yesterday."
"I shouldn't wonder," said
grandmother.
WHAT THEY FOUND.
"Why l" exclaimed Uncle Jack,
as he looked from the window one
morning.
Hal and Kathie ran to see in a
hurry.
"I do believe it's an owl l" said
Uncle jack.
"Whore's his heads" inquired
Hal.
TJnole jack tapped en the window,
and sure enough, up came a little
head, two bright eyes blinked and
winketl at the phildren, and they
saw a real live owl ! "Couldn't we
catch him?" asked Hai, in a whis-
per. "I'd so like to have an owl,
Uncle Jaek."
The owl rustled his feathers and
put his head on one side, stretched
out -his leg and
"Oh, he's down the fireplace !"
shouted Hal, and in a second he
was running down the stairs,
thump 1 thump ! thump 1
Uncle Jack and. Kathie ran, too.
There he sat, a very, sooty, black
little owl, indeed, right in the mid-
dle`of the fireplace.
He blinked and winked more than
ever, and rustled his feathers all
over his fate little body.
"Let's put a basket over him, and
Uncle Jack can take him out," sug-
gested Hal.
Uncle Jack's eyes twinkled as he
answered, "Well, run and' get the
basket."
Hal did run, and was back again
in a minute.
"Now get him, quick, Uncle
Jack 1" exclaimed Hal, ander his
breath.
"Hoot 1 Hoot 1"
Both children rushed from the
library, and never stopped til]Jhey'
reached their mother's room.
"Have you got him 1" called Kathie,
as Uncle Jack calve up. the Stairs.
"He's flown up the chimney,
said Uncle Jack, laughing. "He
was% too wise an owl to let Uncle
Jack catch him, even with fur gloves
en."
"I'm most glad,". said Kathie
"for he scared me—awful!"
"Girls are always scared 1" an-
nl+erod Hal, in a lofty tone. And
he wondered why Uncle Jack laugh-
ed so load and long. -Youth's Com.

KEEP YOUR TEMPER.
Which of all domestic virtues is
most essential to a happy married
life? The ability to keep one's tem-
per, beyond all question. There
is nothing which lends more to -mis-
ery, not only ,for its possessor, but
also for those about him, than an
ungovernable and unreasonable
temper. No one is worse to live with
than an ill-tempered man, except,
perhaps, an ill-tempered woman.
Bad-tempered people completely
spoil the lives of those who associ-
ate with them. The feeling of strain
is ever present; 0110 never knows
just when the storm will break, al-
though apparently, the;weather,
metaphorically, is ` 'set .fair." Life
in these circumstances becomes a
burden almost beyond bearing.

him in your hip pocket.

(Special).—That most of the ills
that the aufferiug women of. Canada
have to boar are due to clisoedered
Kidneys, and that the natural cure
for them is Dodd's Kidney Pills, is
once more shown in the case of Mrs.

Mrs, Clarke is always readyto give
her experience for the benefit of
her suffering sisters.•
"My sickness commenced twenty
years ago with the change of lffe,
says Mrs. Clarke. "My health was
in a bad state. Water would run
from: my head which would make me
faint. ' When I came out of the
fainting spells • I took fits. I was
bloated till I' was clumsy. The pain
I suffered was awful. It would: go
in my feet and then to my head.
Many doctors attended me, and I
tried many medicines, but nothing
gave me relief till I used Dodd's
Kidney Pills. The first box strap-
ped the fits and seven boxes cured
me completely."
Every suffering woman should use
Dodd's Kidney Pills. '!hey make

A CENTURY OF MARRIAGE.
A ceremony which very probably
has never had its equal in the his-
tory of anyone tip to this time was
celebrated lately in the little vil-
Iage. of Isonbalgi; in Hungary. It
took place to commemorate the mar-
riage of the couple Szetnmari, unit-
ed for exactly 100 years. The hus-
band is 120 years of age and the
wife 116. Their descendants count
together more than 250 persons.
The two old people, who inhabit a
quite modest little cottage, are very
much loved by their neighbors, who
surround them with every possible
care. They are, however, almost
quite blind and deaf. They pass
their time away mostly in sleeping.
Still, occasionally the old man
smokes a litle pipe with evident
satisfaction, and enjoys a glass of
wine. The queerest thing about
their whole life is that this old cou-
ple have never quitted their vil-
lage—they were both born there.
Their life has been passed there
quietly and peacefully, and never
has a wish arisen in their minds to
know anything of the vast world
which lies beyond their narrow ho-
rizon.

has very greatly increased. It is
beneficial in all countries, and wher-
