Word was received here last week
of the death of John H. McTavish, at
Gilbert Plains, Man„ father of Peter
and Dan. PecTavish, of Howick, De•
ceased, who was in his 88th year, was
a very successful farmer and one of
the pioneers of this vicinity, goin
West a few years' ago where he an
Mre. McTavish made their home with
their children. They spent last Win-
ter with their sons here only return-
ing to the West this Spring. Mr.,Mc-
Tavish was a 'quiet unassuming man
possessed of qualities which won for
bins the respect of all with :whom he
ame in contact. The body is being
ent here and interment will take
lace in the 'Wroxeter Cemetery on
ursday afternoon.

George and Mrs. Sperling desire to
thank the friends and neighbors for
their kindness and sympathy in the
death of the former's sister, Miss
Anna.
Last Sunday Miss Anna Spading
died at the home of her brother,
George Sperling, after a short illness,
aged 62 years. The funeral took place
to Brussels ,cemetery, Rev. E. G.
Powell, of Brussels, conducting the
service.

Dwer's O amerce ANNIVERSARY. -
The anniversary services in connec-
tion with Duif'a church, McKillop,
were held on Sunday and Monday,
October 17 and 18. Sunday morning
and evening forcible sermons were
preached by Rev. Mr. Sewers, of
Beucefleld, which were listened to by
large congregations. Monday even-
ing a fowl supper *as served by the
ladies of the congregation in the base-
ment of the church, which was follow-
ed by a musical and literary program
in the body of the church. The music,
which was of a high order, was sup-
plied by a double quartette from the
Methodist church choir, Seaforth, as-
sisted byy the Imperial Male Quartette
of the same choir. John Scott, of
Roxboro', also gave a well rendered
solo, and George Murdie a couple of
good recitations.

Monday, Nov. -1st.

crops of potatoes this Pall.
John T. Bell's cider mill is running
the last three days bleach week.
Ex -Councillor George Jackson and
Mrs. Jackson were visiting relatives
in Elam township last week.
Joe Miller is slowly recovering after
a long illness of typhoid fever. His
many friends hope Ise will soon be
convalescent.

were awarded the Bronze Medal at
Brussels Pall Fair for the largest and
best herd of grade cattle. Good for

The Brussels, Morris and Grey Tele-
phone Co. are busy setting the poles
for the new line and the wires will
soon be on. Commencement was
made on the 4th line. Every farmer
should have a phone, one of the 20th
century conveniences,
Last Friday Mrs. Robert Shedden,
4th line, arrived home from the hospi-
tat, at Clinton, where she has been for
the past 2e months. Her many old
friends are pleased to hear that her
health is much improved and trust
that she will soon be convalescent.
A Wingham reporter says :-Harold
McCall, of Walton, arrived in town on
Monday and commenced the study of
shorthand at the Wingham Business
College, Mt. McCall is a brother of
Jas. McCall, who was a student of the
same college four years ago. and who
is now holding a lucrative position in
the West.

FARM SOLD, -Last week, Thos. S.
Brandon, a well known resident of the
2nd line, sold his fine 150 acre farm to
James Nethery, receiving the sues of
$7;050. The purchaser gets possession
on Nov. 1st, Mr, Brandon will take a
well merited rest from many years of
active farm Iife. Mr, Nethery is well
known in the community as he has
resided in Bslgrave and Bluevalo lo-
calities for a good many years.
During the past week ;Inc. Douglas,
son of John Douglas, 0th line, has
been very claugerously ill from a
stoppage of the bowels, We are
pleased to report that be is consider-
ably better and wo hope will soon
regain his usual good health. Mr.
Douglas was employed as manager of
the farm of the late James Shaw,
whose farm adjoins the coeporaeioli
of Brussels, Storing the past season.

Arrangements have been mad'e.
whereby Rev. Walter Russell, M, A.,
of Toronto, the well known evangelist,
will conduct a series of special services
in the Methodist Church here com-
mencing next Monday. Mr. Russell
is an extra good preacher and as a
teacher of the Good Book is hard to
equal. All who can should make an
effort to hear him and share in the
benefits of his visit.
Anniversary services were held in
the Methodist and Knox Ohuroh last
Sabbath. Rev. Mr. Powell, of Brus-
sels, occupied the pulpit in the former
church and Rev. T. 1). L. McKerroll,
M. A., of.Lucknow, preached in the
latter, both services being well attend-
ed and much enjoyed. 11r. McKerroll
was much appreciated in Knox
church, The offering of Knox con-
gregation amounted to about $100.

A. H. MCDoeteem APPOINTED CLERK
AND TREASURER. -At the meeting of
the Township Council held here last
Monday, A. II. McDonald, principal
of Ethel public school was appointed
Township Clerk and Municipal Treas-
urer as successor to the late John Mc-
Intosh, at the same salary viz $400.00
for both offices. He supplies guarantee
bonds security of $20,000. The new
appointee will assume his duties on
Nov, 15th and will also complete this
term as teacher. Robt. Livingston
and Wm. Cameron were appointed to
audit the accounts up to this elate be-
fore Mr. McDonald takes office. The
new man should make a good official
and will no doubb quickly acquaint
himself with the many deities. Mr,
McDonald has proven himself a filo
citizen since coming to. Ethel and has
earned the goodwill of the communi-
ty. He is a good teacher and general
regret will be felt in his retirement
from the principalship. We wish him
a comfortable occupancy of office.
RESOLUTION TO' MRS. MCINTOSB,-
At the meeting of Grey Township
Council last Monday the following
resolution, which speaks fog itself,
was passed and a oopy ordered to be
forwarded to Mrs. McIntosh :-Moved

leadzean that we, as a Council, desire
to place on record a well earned and
merited tribute to the memory of
John McIntosh, the late widely known
and highly esteemed Township Clerk
and Treasurer of this Munio;pality,
Coming into the first mentioned of-
fice seven years ago, new to the multi-
farious duties, he set to work to me
quaint himself with the many things
essential to the proper occupancy of
the positi.ou and so web did he succeed
that he became a veritable culn-
pendiunt of municipal . knowledge,
He was very prompt and correct in
the performance of his work ; careful
even to the style of penlr3anship and
iu scores of hays was most helpful to
the Council. :Honest to 'the cent and

dredgingcontractor, who has been
busy in Logan township, Jeeves this
week for Wapato, Washington State,
where he will probably spend the
Winter. lie purchased property
there last year so is somewhat ac-
quainted. Ib is an irrigation country
from which good returns are received.

been dissolved, Mr, Duncan, who
established the business some years
ago, will again assume sole control.
Mr. McNeil has not yet definitely
decided on the future and will remain
for a time in the establishment. He
has very warm friends in Estevan,
who will hope that whatever enter-
prise he may decide upon, be may
still fled scope for his energies and
good business abilities in Estevan.

Robt. L. McDonald, 9th con., has had
quito awide experience in heavy draft
horses and has also taken a whirl with
thoro'bred hogs, doing well with both.
Daring the past year, while holding
to the horses and pigs, he has launched
out into Leicester sheep and for the
first season has been remarkably
successful as a prize winner at the
Fall Faris, takin the followingg
awards :-Mitchell where he only had
5 head) two lets an 2 2nds ; Listowel,
seven lses and two 2nds ; Seaforth,
nine lsts and two 2nds : Atwood, five
lsts and two 2nds Brussels, five lsts,
a 2nd and a 3rd ; Blyth, three lets and
two 2nds, a total of thirty one 1st
prizes, eleven 2nds and a 3rd. The
competition was sharp at a number of
the Faits, meeting exhibits that were
at Toronto and London, Mr. Mc-
Donald will pursue the sheep industry
and will visit Toronto Industrial, in
1010 and Guelph Winter Fair in
Decemlaer of this year. He has 5
choice ram lambs toe sale yet. Mac's
enterprise is to be commended,

our young men was made happy by
the pretty home weddingwhich took
place Wednesday, Oet. 13th at "Maple
Villa," the comfortable home of Luke
Sperian, 14th con. of Gley, when his

ly at 5 o'clock, as Miss Laura Sperian,
neice of the bride, played Lohengrins
Wedding March, the principals, who
were unattended, took their places
under an arch from which was sus-
pended a white bell. The bride, who
was given away byher father, other
was
handsomely dressed in cream silk
voile over white silk, with satin and
applique trimmings. She carried a
beautiful boquet 0f lily of the valley
and ferns. The ceremony was per-
formed by Rev. J. Henderson, of
Ethel, in the presence of the families
of the contracting parties. After
hearty congratulations the party sat
down to a sumptuous repast which
was enjoyed lay all. The evening was
most pleasantly spent in games and
music. The brides travelling suit is
of blue ladies cloth with hat to match.
Wedding gifts were rare and costly,
testifying to the popularity of the
bride. Groom's gift to the bride was a
gold bar pin with. ruby and pearls set-
ting ; to the organist a gold locket.
Mr, and Mrs. Robinson will make their
home in Edmonton where they carry
with them the best wishes of a large
circle of friends.
W. J. Fuller, Mitchell, left to enter
the Ontario Dental College, Toronto.
Mr. Chadwick, Trenton, bas been
engaged as organist of the Methodist
church, Mitchell.
IIiss Marney, daughter of Rural
Dean Taylor, of St. Marys, was mar-
ried Thursday of last week to Mr.
Vice, an employee in the Maxwell
works.
The Quarterly Board of the Metho-
dist Church, Mitchell, have shown
their appreciation of their pastor,
Rov, Jas, Livingstone, by increasing
his salary $100.
Grandma Pridham, of Munro, who
is nearing her uinety fifth birthday, is
enjoying fairly good health. . She is
able to get about the horse, take her
meals and converse with her friends.
Miss Mary McLagan, an employee
in the T. S. Ford& Co'sstote, Mitchell
held the ticket which won the gold
watch given by McDonald Bros., pro-
prietors,of Wonderland theatre,
Wm. and hirs. Schafer, Mitchell,
Opt„ announce the engagementof
their daughter, Miss Jessie Louise. to
Dr. R. McGill, the marriage to take
place quietly the end of the mouth.
W. J, Waikom, of Munro, Fnllartnn,
was. in Mitchell Tuesday of last week,
with the head of a supposed mad dog,
which he was forwarding to Ottawa
to have the brain analyzed. The
brute bit several dogs in the neigh-
borhood, and killed over thirty hens
belonging to Henry Walkom. He
was in the hog pen of W. J. Walkout
when shot, The neighborhood is
leatlyexcited over the matter, as the
greatly

hydraplsobia.

Miss May Birt was holidaying with

Mrs. John Forbes is home from a visit
with relatives and friends in Stratford

Y. S. Birk has been on the sick list but

G. W. Barrington. of Montreal, spout
a few days ,in Brussels last week. He
is a brother to Mrs. F. H. Gilroy, of
town.
Mrs. Alex. Hunter arrived home last
week from a most enjoyable visit of
several months with relatives and friends
in the 1J. S,
Councillor Lowry had the misfortune
to have a piece of lime iiy into one of
his eyes last week which bothered him
considerably for a time.
Mrs, J. L. Kerr is under the doctor's
care this week suffering from an attack
of pneumonia. We hope speedy con-
valesence may be effected.
Miss Edith Colvin left Wednesday of
this week for Harding, Man., where she
will spend a couple of months visiting
her sister, Mrs. English, and also her
father in Winnipeg.
We are pleased to state that Oliver
Qnarin, of Barrie, is making a 'good
recovery from the operation he under-
went for appendicitis and was able to
resume work in his tonsorial parlor.
Mrs. and Miss Richards have come
from Bayfield and will spend the Win-
ter in Brussels as has been their custom
for several years. They are mother aad
sister to our townsman, I, C. Richards.
Eddie Lowry has gone to Loudon.
where he will assist his brother, Will, in
the management of his newly fitted up
roller skating rink which the owner has
changed from an ice rink. We wish the
proprietor success.
Mrs. J. W. Craigie, of Colborne, Oat„
is here on a visit with her parents,
Councillor D. A. and Mrs. Lowry,
Queen street, Mr. Craigie is expected
for Thanskgiving. Mrs, Craigie's many
old hiends were pleased to welcome her
back to town.
Dr. Bert. Ferguson. son of Dougald
and Mrs. Ferguson, of'1'ceswater, who
has been practicing his profession at
Desboro, has moved to'l.'eeswater where
he purposes making his home, Dr.
Bert. has many friends here who' wish
him the best possible success.
Guy Jones, who is a blacksmith in S.
H.Jackson's shop, has
been, dangerous-
ly
ill with pneumonia this week at the
home of Mr. Jackson but we hope he
will soon regain his accustomed vigor.
Relatives were here from Seaforth, his
parental home, owing to his illness.
DZNrnr,s.-James S. Strachan has
gone to Winnipeg where be has accept-
ed a nositlon in a Dental parlor, He
should do well there, -Geo. Ross has
gone to Toronto to resume his course in
the Ontario College. -Percy Richards
left a week or so ago for Chicago where
he is studying Dentistry. We wish the
boys success in their studies.
Mrs. J. C. Cooper, of Chicago, who
was here for the past month seeking
improvement in health, left for her
home last week. feeling considerably
better. The visitor is a 'daughter of
Mrs, Wm, Newsom, of Brussels, and
has lived in Chicago for the past 20
years where they have done wen. Mr.
Couper was a former resident of town
and holds an influential position in
Chicago.
Last Saturday R, and Mrs. Leather-
dale returned home after a holiday visit
to Winnipeg and other Western points.
Their stay was lengthened over their
intention owing to Mr, Leatherdale's
illness of several weeks from a combina-
tion of sciatica, rheumatism and neural-
gia, a bad trinity. He is not ; en-
tirely fres from the effects yet but is able
to get about quite handily we are pleas-
ed t0 state.

Wilfrid Forbes, son of John Forbes,
Brunswick street, Stratford, who has
beeh clerk of the supreme court ab
Alberta, has been appointed registrar
of land titles for Alberta, with heads
quarters at Calgary.
Justice Teetzel at Osgood° Hall,
Toronto, Saturday, quashed a By-law
of the Township of 13lanshard, Perth
County, for the issuing of debentures
in aid of the St. Marys' and Western.
Ontario Railway. The By-law is
quashed on the ground that the lists
on which the By-law was voted were
irregular, the court 'of revision com-
piling them having met too early.
A number of members of the At-
wood and Donegal Methodist churches
met recently at the home of Win,
Horn, and presented Samuel and Mrs.
Wherry, now of Listowel, each with a
piece of gold, in recognition of their-
many kindnesses shown tothe two
congregations during a long period of
connection with them. t1. pleasant
social time was spent.
