Toronto, Surveyor of Customs is laid
up with a sprained knee. A curious
coincidence is that while passing a
sofa a needle in some way ran into his
leg just at the place where it was
afterwards sprained and the end
broke off, The needle had to be ex-
tracted. This had nothing to do with
the other case however, Mr. Holmes
will, be laid up for several days . as a
result of the second injury. His
many friends here hope he will soon
be o. k.

WEDDING.-A very pretty - wedding
was solemnized at the residence of
Wm, Gilbert Forgie, on Wednesday
29th Sept., when his daughter, Miss
Agnes, was united in marriage to R.
E. Peterman, of Belmore. The cere-
mony was performed by Rev. W. J.
West, M. A., of Bluevale, in the pres-
ence of about thirty immediate rela-
tives of bride and groom. The bride
looked very pretty dressed in cream
satin and carried a shower boquet of
white' carnations. She was assisted
by her sister, Miss Mary and her little
niece from.Wingham. The groom was s
assisted by his brother, W. J. Peter -
roan, of Carrick. The` esteem in which
the young people are held was attest-

PIGOTT SUIT POSTPONED.—Four
weeks of cross-examining by Wal-
lace Nesbitt. X. 0., for plaintiff and
Geo. F. Shepley, K. 0., for defend-
ants, have been insufficient to accum-
ulate enough evidence to settle the
suit of M. A. Pigott against the
Guelph and Goderich railway, so the
ease was adjourned for the fourth
time. It held the boards two weeks
last Spring, another week last assizes
all the past week and is booked again
for Nov, 8. Mr. Pigott elaims the
company owes him half a million dol-
lars.

The trustees of Walton school have
engaged Miss Tougit, of Clinton, as
teacher for next year. Melvin Dodds,
the present teacher, will not continue
in the profession it is said.
It is said Mrs. Thos. McFadzean, jr.,
will remove to Brussels where she will
make her home. Her mother will re-
side with her. Mr. Pepper from Hee-
sail locality, has leased the farm and
will get possession early next Spring.
GALL TO RAV. MR. LVNDY.—A
meeting of the congregation of Duff's
Ohureh, Walton, was held on Monday
afternoon, presided over by the
Moderator, Rev. A. 0. Wishart, B. A.,
of Brussels, the object being to give a
call to a minister. The congregation
has been vacant since the removal of
Rev. Mr. McNab, M. A., to Under-
wood early last May. Only one name
came before the meeting, viz., Rev.'
R. A. Lundy, of Williamsburg, Brock-
ville Presbytery. The call will be
presented to the Presbytery of Malls
and on Thursday ,of this week when
convenes to induct Rev. R. Me-
acham

nesday night of last week at the home

from an attack of pneumonia follow-
ing whooping cough, last Saturday,
aged 1 year and 4 months. Funeral

was not feeling very well got up to
light the lamp, when she took a dizzy
spell and fell, hurting her side and

broken, although she was laid up for

Trade banquet at Stratford on Oct.

Police Magistrate has disposed of
twenty cases, the majority of which
were for assault and abusive language.

What might have proved a dis-
astrous fire had it not been checked
in time ocourl'ed last Thursday even-
ing about 8 o'clock when a slab pile
at W R. Thompson & Co's. saw -ill
was dm
discovered to be on lire. When
first noticed it had gained considerable
headway and it is only owing to the
facts that the evening was very calm
and the fire on the outside that the
building was saved at all. The
citizens of the village responded well
when the fire alarm was sounded and
after some bard work succeeded in
overcoming the flames. The fire is
thought to have originated from a
spark from the smoke -stack.

After a long illness, which was

morning of last week in her Goth year.
Deceased was an industrious woman.
a loving wife and mother and was es-
teemed by all who knew her for her
estimable qualities. Only two weeks
ago a son was buried which makes the
affliction doubly sad, and much sym-
pathy'is felt for the bereaved father,
sons and daughter's.

Robert Butcher, an Englishman, 20
years of age, committed suicide on
Monday afternoon of last week by
hanging himself to a tree in T.
Lamont s bush, about two miles South
of St. Marys, the body being discover-
ed next; morning. Butcher was in
Mr. Lamont's employ. Mes Lamont
was on a visit to St. Marys and got a
letter for Butcher, which he delivered
Butcher disappeared soon after and
nothing more was seen of hint until
the findingof his body.' The letter
delivexed y Mr. Lamont was the
cause of Butcher's act, It was from a
young lady of St. Marys, lately from
Jinglaud, in which she shows prefer-
ence for a friend rhe had left in Eng-
land.

ionate adieus. Rev. W. P. and Mrs.
Byers, with whom Miss Carr will be
located at Asansol, India, leave for
India a few days later, Mr. Byers
may possibly leave Saturday; next in
order to give several addresses before
sailing, Mts. Byers following nearer
the sailing date.
