The bee was the stingless ,kind, so Danny handled it without ,fear, and finally pulled off its wings, .thus rendering it still more help- less. He thought it great sport to see it crawl desperately, first in one ,dlroetion, theh in another, in order to get away from its tormentor. The harder ib palled at the string, ,the more it pleased Danny, who ,yanked the poor insect here and there, laughing heartil,' at its ef- forts to °seeps. After a time the bee's struggles .became less violent, its movements =oro feeble, until finally they ceas- ed altogether, and the little crea- ture lay, apparently lifeless, on the .ground. Danny took it up in his hand and dangled it on the string. It hung there, quite inert and limp,. so he threw it into the long grass, de- .elaring that the. fun was over. It was too warm to hunt up some- thing else interesting to do just then, so Danny lay down on the soft, green grass, and blinked laz- ily up at the tiny, white clouds sailing about in the clear, blue sky, wishing he could have a ride on •one of them. Ha was just "malt- ing believe" that he was flying in an airship, when suddenly he felt a violent pull on his arm; then another, and still another. Ile' was -about to protest against being so. rudely disturbed, when he saw something- that made him forget .everything else. A great creature (it seemed to him a giant), towered above him. In his hand be held one end of a rope, while the other end he fast - vied to Danny's arm. _Every min- •tte or two, the giant would give a je5'k to the rope, and too poor boy was pulled hither' and thither, with .an abruptness that was anything but agreeable. Besides the rope hurt Danny cruelly. The giant, I' however, was so big and strong, and Danny so small and helpless, he could do nothing but cry out with pain and anger. The giant only Iaughed at that, and pulled the harder. Poor Danny was yank- ed .this way and that, until be was ao dizzy and sore it was misery to move. When he felt he could bear no more, to his horror, the giant came quite close to him. "I' think I will pull off your arms and logs," roar- ed he, in tones of thunder. In an agony of fear, Danny burst into tears, crying out, "Please, Mr. Giant, do not kill me I" , "But you did not mini killing the poor bee," returned the giant, coming still nearer, so close that Danny could see, quite plainly, his dreadful, rolling dyes. "But I'll never do it again," wailed Danny; "I never once thought I was hurting it. It was only a beet," "Well, yon are only a boy, and P11 have you to know that bees '1' have feelings as well as boys," re- torted tho giant, "But as you say you will never be so cruel again, I will let you off this tune," and the giant turned as if to. depart. Be- fore he dropped the rope, however, he gave a final jerk, which was so violent that Danny—awoke. It was only a dream, after all,. but dreams sometimes teach useful lessons, as this one did to Danny, for never again was he known to torture, hi sown r ' o siv ' own d orsion, even such an humble creature as a bee. THE WHITE ANT...,, -t. • Railway Buiiders.in Africa Have Trouble With Thcia- Eveiy month brings us nearer to the realization of Mr, Cecil Rhode's dream of a Cape -to -Cairo railway, The rails have been laid for a dis- tance of over 2,000 miles from the Cape, and Tanganyika is now not much more than 400 miles off. In these parts the railway sta- tions are built of galvanized iron, while th)s telegraph -poles, and the "ties" into which' the rails are clampedaro of stool. Even in the hubs for the railway workers little or no wood is used, on account of the tens upon tons of thoustttils of white ants which/ infest the regions' north of the Zambesi. • These Voracious pests will destroy anything in the nature of wood, and their mounds aro occasionally, as high as twenty feet. The only value of these ants is that their homes form a natural ce- ment, which the natives use in the construction of their huts. Put on wooden uprights like plaster, i.t be- come as hard as stone, and acts as h perfect protection from the wwea- ther. When the history of this gigantic undertaking comes to be written, not the least inberosting will be the i✓,f account of theengineers' fight with f: the white ant, the latter over learns to dine off 'steel, the work 1 of years will be undone in :1s many o w alrm. • SADLY RUN DOWN. Extraordinary Instances of Ser - rants' Gratitude to Their Masters. A Lancashire gentleman, lately deceased, commenced life as a ser- vant in a merchant's family, where he hail saved a fair sum when loss of fortune overtook his master, whom a severe illness simultan- eously struck down. His situation gone, the servant invested his sav- ings in a small business, and, tak- ing his old master to his humble home, tended him through his long illness and supplied him with all necessaries until he was sufficiently convalescent to obtain a modest berth, where he remained until the death of a distant relative once again placed him in an opulent posi- tion. Hie gratitude to his faithful servant found prompt and practical expression, and, when ten years later he died, he made him prac- tically his heir. By a strange coincidence the valet of a gentleman moving to the best Viennese society came into a con- siderable sum of money almost at the same time that his master, through reckless investments, lost his fortune. , Greatly attached to his employer, the man, despite all persuasion to the contrary refused to quit his old service, stipulating only that he might be permitted to marry a young woman to whom he had long been engaged. For There was ono thing about the many years until the gentleman's old-fashioned inn to which much at - death he, tension was paid, and that was ASSISTED BY HIS WIFE, the signboard, says The Queen. not only performed his duties as of Ab a time when few people could yore, but from his own purse sup-' road or write house signs were in - plied the needs of the household, dispensable in everyday life, es besides allowing his master a °or- pocially in the towns, and as inns tain sum as pocket -money, and taverns wore always common, That they might retain their sit- their distinctions gave the name nations, a decidedly original plot to many a street, for not infra- was hatched in the servants' hall quently they were the first buildings of a large mansion in the West of to be erected, Many of the cora- England, whereof the proprietor, binations read whimsically, and a suddenly seised with hallunciation writer in the British Apo]lo of 1707, that he was a pauper, was on the says; point of reducing his establishment I'm amused at the signs to the smallest possible dimensions, As I passthrough the town; To prevent this his servants re To see the odd mixture— olved to subscribe among them- A Magpie and Crown, elves a certain sum, which, every The Whale and the Crow, The Razor and Hen, The Leg and Seven Stars, ,The Scissors and Pen, The Akre and thio Bottle, Tho Tun and the Lute, The Eagle and Child, Tho Shovel and Boot. This exaction the valet endured, in the hope of testamentary recog- nition from his master, who was infirm and well in years. In this, however, be was disappointed, for his lodger died intestate, nor would his relatives, when applied to, rec- ognize the validity of the landlord's claim, AN ECCENTRIC PARISIAN boasts that he is kept by hia ser- vants, to whom he pays no wages. How does he effect this? Every month certain sums are secreted about the house, which are found by the domestics, and by them utilized for their own and master's keep. Whence these windfalls come is an open secret; the ser- vants are quite content to accept in silence a state of things which, while a demand for wages or a mean economy in their master's board would ensure prompt dismissal, leaves an ample allowance of francs for their own use. "I have kept you long enough; should you desire to remain in my service you will in future have to keep me." Thus spake a Leeds gentleman to his three servants who had been some years in his service. Two of them left there and then; the third, who, besides her savings, had a modest annuity of her own, resoled to stay. For four years she supported her master, to find her- self at his death the richer by £5,000.—London Tit -Bits. d ROOMS TO LET IN PARIS.
