LETTER FROM CALGARY
To the Editor of Tax Pose :
DEAR SM. -Leaving Reward,. Sask.,
early in October I journeyed to Medi -
eine Hitt, Alberta, where I enjoyed a
pleasanb stay of two weeks.
This is the town that Rudyard
Kipling claimed was born lucky on
account of the abundant amount of
natural gas available. It is used for
all purposes, both lighting and heat-
ing. Street lights burn night and
day, the city fathers claiming 01) would
not pay them to employ amen to ex-
tinguish and relight them, Since the
wells were drilled several years ago
there has been no decrease of pressure
to the square inch. Medicine Hat has
a population of 5,000 and I consider it
is typically named. Itis situated in a
valley completely surrounded by hills
and is the centre of a great ranebing
country, the climate being said to be
better adapted for such purposes than
any other part of Alberta. Was in-
formed that they had exceedingly
mild Winters. About six inches of
snow fell daring my visit there which
was the assurance that old timers had
that a calm Winter was before them.
Two years ago this storm did not
come and the cold was very severe
that season, as it was all over Canada.
Leaving "The Hat" I came North to
Calgary, the place every body likes
who have once had the privilege of
living here. "Calgary's splendid
climate" is a watchword all over
America. After living in the East
and experiencing the preliminary
storms of snow and rain before
Winter setsin in earnest and then
living in Calgary, I think one should
be. forgiven for looking upon "Sunny
Alberta" as a soot of Paradise. The
weather at present will force ther-
mometers to register close upon Sum-
mer heat. During my residence here
of almost a month there have been
only two days that were decidedly
chilly when the thermometer went
down four degrees below zero. A8
there is no wind when frosty I clo not
think the cold is noticed so much.
Calgary has a population of over
24,000. Since 1901 it is claimed it has
increased almost 18,000. The city cov-
ers an area of 12 square miles. It
q e s is
the commercial centre of 50,000,000
acres of farm, grazing, timber and coal
lands. The averageyieldper acreof
s
Winter wheat in the vicinity of
Calgary is 28 bushels ; Spring wheat
is :df bushels while oats go 80 bushels.
Five elevator companies have their
head offices here and upwards of one
million bushels of grain were market-
ed here last year while 120,000 barrels
of flour were milled by Calgary
flour mills. Branches of the 0. P.
R. run North, South, East and West
out of the city. Branches of the Great
Northern, Canclian Northern and
Grand Trunk Pacific are expect-
ed to soon enter the city. There
are thirteen branches of Cana-
dian chartered bauks in the city.
A new Normal School wasrecently re-
opened and besides there is one High
School, two Roman Catholic separate
schools and nine public schools, also
two busiuess colleges. There are six
Presbyterian churches, five Methodist,
five Baptist, four lfipiscopalian, two
Roman Catholic, two Lutheran, one
Moravian church and one Salvation
Army. There are two large public
hospitals and four private hospitals.
There are twenty hotels that cater to
the wants of the public. In the
manufacturing section there are forty
factories or more, producing biscuits,
boxes, breakfast foods, bricks, beds,
building material, cement and cement
blocks, groundcoffee andfiour, leather
goods, mattresses, soap, show cases,
saddlery, tents, wagons and other
saleable articles. A great deal has
been clone lately in street improve-
ment. It is estimated that there are
twenty-one miles of granolitbic side-
walks, twenty miles of plank side-
walks, nlnoteon miles of sewers and
thirty miles of water mains. The
great undertaking at present is the
laying of the rails for a street railway
and the pavingof the streets. The
work on. Gightx Avenue, the principal
business street, is almost completed
and judging from the speed that the
contractors are doing their work it
Will not be long before the citizens of
Calgary will not be forced to walk,
There are 105 wholesale houses in Cal-
gary each having as large a business
as any such firm in Wlnuipeg.-
Well
Mr. Kerr, perhaps I have mentioned a
few things about Calgary that you
did not know before but to realize
what a prosperous city it •1S and to
know what itis like to live in "Sunny
Alberta,' a trip to this wonderful
country is nenessery. The directors
of the. Dominion Exhibition helot here
in July last have found it to bo such a
snceess that Calgary will have a Fair
of it's own next year, The first Week
in Jlily is the date set, "There's yens'

The old fashioned way of dosing a
weak stomach, or stimulating the
Heart or Kidneys is all wrong. Do'.
Shoop first pointed out this error.
This is why his prescription -Dr.
Shoots's Restorative -is directed en-
tirely to the cause of these ailments -
the weak inside or controlling nerves.
It isn't so difficult, says Dr. Shoop, to
strengthen a weak Stomach, Heart or
Kidneys, if one goes at it correctly.
Each inside organ has its Controlling
or inside nerve. When these nerves
fail, then those organs must surely
falter. These vital truths are leading
druggists everywhere to dispense and
recomnnend Do. Shoop's Restorative.

HOSPITAL FOR

the fight against the dread White
Plague"
This Christmas Stamp idea was
started in Denmark about four year's
ago, where the cash returns have
built and financed a Consumptive
Hospital, ' A year ago, the Red ()rose
Society of Denmark sold over 400,000
wills the co-operation of stores,
churches, clubs, and boys and girls.
In fact, everybody helped in this pop-
ular movement, and this year their
National Red Cross Society is selling
the stamps all over the States.
A STAMP FOR CANADA
The neat little stamp in red and
white, lido above cut, and belling at
sue cent each, is, published by the
National Sanitarium Association in
the interests of the Muskoka Free
Hos ital.
The stamp p does not pay
postage, butmay be put on lettere,
packages and Christmas cards of all
kinds, and will bear the happy Sea-
son's Greotinge everywhere.
Willing workers all over the Domin'
ion are organizing little bands for
stamp selling. The hospital board is
hoping that over s million stamps
will be sold before Christmas, and the
work for the consumptive poor from
sea to sea will bo greatly strengthened.
