"Isn't that a very dangerous geme, Jimmy?" jimmy looked seared, but his fa- ther smiled. "I think we'd better Jet him try it for a while," be said, and Jimmy brightened up, 'I'll need a uniform,'' he an- nounced, "A jersey, and shoes, and pants." Mrs. Lee yielded the point. "But I know I eha'n't like this game,' she said. "How does football go 1" Mr. Lee asked, the next evening. "Fine!" said Jimmy. "One of the fellows fell down to -day and out his lip, though. Say, father, can I buy a nose -guard? I couldn't cut my lip if I had a nose -guard." The Sufferer Fula That Enloe Relief Domes Insanity Will Folinv. There is no torture more ietol- lerable than nervousness. A nerv- ous person is in a state of constant irritation by day• and sleeplessness by night. The sufferer starts at every noise, is shaky and depressed. Often although ie a completely ex- hausted state is unable to it or lie still. or trouble of this kind abso- lutely:the hest thing in the world is Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. The nerves aro jaded and jangled be- cause they are being starved by poet' watery blood. Dr. Williams' Pink Pills make new rich blood which feeds and soothes the irritat- ed nerves, There is absolutely no doubt about this; thousands can testify of the blood -making, nerve - restoring qualities of these among them is Mrs, Thos. Harpell, Wallace Bridge,S., N. who says :— "Some years ago 1 took sick and the doctor pronounced the trouble nervous prostration. To describe the tortures of it is impossible. It is. not generally known that Stanley, the famous explorer, was a waif, and that his..oeiginal name was not Stanley at all. The little boy's "real name" was John Row- lands. He was born near Denbigh, Wales, in 1810. When ho was three years old he was put in a poorhouse at St. Asaph. It was ten years lot- er that he sailed away to Ametioa ae a cabin -hey. In New Orleans a merchant by the name of Henry Morton Stanley adopted him and the little hey was given his name, The "John Rowlands" was dis- carded from that day, and it was Henry M. BEST IVORY 'FROM AFRICA. Ivory comes from hippopotamus teeth, walrus tusks, narwhal horns, whales' -teeth and boars' tusks. At present ivory costs about $7,200 a ton; the price of billiard ball ivory has reached the remise' figure of $800 •a hundredweight, The best ivory comes from Africa, Mammoth tusks are found in extraordinary ahundance in Siberia, principally, but they are not very highly esteem- ed, though they run to an enorm- cur, size and indeed hold the record, being sometimes twelve feet long and weighing 200 pounds. The na- tives of Africa regard ivory as the standard of wealth and store it up in their villages for hundreds of years, constantly adding to their stock, and thus the supply con- tinues and will continue for many "1 clue't need a heacl-gear to about a month began to feel bettem years. s — practise. FROM BONNIE SCOTLAND NOTES OF INTEREST FROM HER BANNS AND BRA.ES. GOLD GUNS MELTED. Costly Weapons of 1111 Indian Prince Converted Into Bullion. I learn with profound regret (writes .a Westminster Gazette cor- respondent) that H. H., the Ma- lta -Nall Gaekwar of Baroda has melted down a,nd converted into bullion the celobated gold and sil- ver cannon of Bared's. I say "with rrofound regret" for sentimental reasons. Of these costly but useless toys, the silver guns were the inspiration of the former Gaekwar. In order to "go one better" than his prede- cessor, the late Gackwar 7(ho who was charged in 1875 with the a - tempted murder of Col. .Phayre), had the gold guns cast and mounted at a cost, it is said, of £100,000. They -reposed in the state armory and were the wonder and admira- tion of all . visitors to the capital. On -State occasions, however — such as coronations, -marriages, etc.—the gold and silver guns were always brought .out to take part in the procession. They -were "horsed" by teems of magnificent white ox- en, which were fittingly caparison- ed, Lc., in cloth of gold for the gold guns and cloth of silver for the sil- ger guns. The native gunners and drivers regarded their charges as sacred, aim the writer has seen offerings of 'rice, fruit, fowls, etc., deposited upon the 'nuzzles of these weapons (1) in the Baroda barracks. Such. offerings have now "had their day and ceased to be." For the present Maharajah-Baekwar happens to be. a man of both practical politics and practised economy, and he would not maintain the "guns" for mere- ly sentimental reason, What is Going Oa in the Highlands and Lowlands of Auld Scotia. But consider this: When a Singer is bought and paid for, it is paid far—it lasts a lifetime. ej A cheap machine is never paid for. Every cent expended for repairs must be added to the original cost—it's an endless system of instalments. These instalments, added to the first cost of the machine, soon ex- eeed the cost of a Singer, and after each successive repair (if you can get another part) the cheap machine grows more and more second-hand—one step nearer the junk heap. g -The time lost, the trouble and the worry outweigh many times over the difference in the cost between the "cheap" machine and the Singer.
