A novel bracelet is of heavy an- tique filigree, gold or silver, broad where the setting, appears. The setting usually is of jecle, Shrewd fashion prophets of Paris are venturing to predict that next year will be one of great simplicity in both hats and gowns. With the sheath gown and such other audacities firmly excluded, the direetoiro style is still the all conquering mode of the day. Charmingly effective lingerie gowns that are, notwithstanding their beauty, eminently practical, ate made of eyelet embroidery of; various widths. One of the variations of the di- rectoire dress is called the Tan- agra—named after the Tanagra sculptures so admired in France, 100 years ago. Fall hats will be large and toques small. Soft and wavy felts are to be much in demand, Velvet asters and roses in bright colors them. Linen suitings so closely resemb- ling suede that the difference can- not be told a few feet away make good looking shopping snits for the warm weather. A winged chapeau, a jumper dress of embroidered net, and one of the newest cretonne coats, with cre- tonne strappings and black satin bindings, serve to complete a fetch- ing costume. Trianon hats are fashionable just now—those wide, wandering ore ations with enormous brims and one or two large flowers for their only trimming with perhaps a touch of black velvet. The newest sash is of black chif- fon, made with a chou or rosette how and long. sweeping ends. It is fastened either in the back or on the left side in the front. In either case it has no bolt. In the latest dancing frock sleeves are practically dispensed with, there being no concealment of the arm from shoulder to finger tip. Gloves are likewise as often con- spicuous by their absence as by their presence. Heavy net and the long, popular filet lace are both excellent for af- ternoon gowns for midsummer, and these two lend themselves especial- ly well to the new tunic and draped models and are good placed over silk or crepe de chine as overskirts. The newest hat pins for tailored or ready to wear hats are of imi- tation amber or yellowish onyx, spike shaped, and looking for all the world like an elongated pear. For an all black dressy hat the one correct pin is a long, narrow ob- long, set in rhinestones. Some reflection of the second em- pire millinery fashions are found in tiny shapes of fine straw in natural color or pastel shades, with a prim garland of old world favorite blooms, forget me nots, lilies of the valley, or roses of exquisite soft coloring. The proper neckwear for the tai- lored suits are the tailor stocks. These are of white lines edged with the colored stripes. They have the small jabots of white frills edged with the striped linen and trimmed with buttons. LEAKAGE II( GOLD MINES. Gang Believed to Ilavo Got Away With Large Sum. There is every reason to believe that the disclosure is imminent of a g'gantic conspiracy to rob the Rand gold mines of enormous sums annually. Some months agoseveral Rand mining companies discovered leak- ages of gold. The matter baffled enquiry, and a careful watch was kept on persons suspected of illicit dealings, 'Detectives were sent to allseaports and watched all trains. Suspicion pointed to a gang op- erating in Johannesburg and Dur- ban.. six weeks ago sixteen detec- tives were despatched to Durban to shadow the suspects. The detec- tives were ostensibly watching card -sharpers attracted to Durban by the gala season. In reality they had laid careful plans to, fathom the conspiracy, It is believed that their efforts will shortly be rewarded with succuss, The modus operandi is to obtain gold from confederates on the mines, 'women taking it in their luggage by the fast mail train to Durban, where other confederates ship it to England. Members of the gang have been constantly travel- ling between Durban, Jobannes- burg and Europe. Another party is believed to be operating. in the direction of Cape- town, and possibly a third by way a£ Delagoa.33ay. It is alleged that a total sum of $100,000 has been stolen in 1908, and many thousands in 1007. Thousands of earnest intelligent young women who earn their live- lihood away from hone in public offices, and large business estab- lishments aro silent suffering vic- tims of overtaxed nerves and defi- ciency of strength. Weak, breath- less and nervous they work against time, with paver a cost when head- aches and backaches make every hour like a day. Little wonder their oheeks lose the tint of health and grow pale and thin; their eyes are dull and shrunken and beauty slow- ly but surely fades. Business girls and women, because of their work and worry, look older than their years. What they seriously need is the frequent help of a true strengthening remedy to carry them through the day, Dr. Williams' Pink Pills are like actual food to the starved nerves and tired brain of the business girl. By making rich, red blood they supply just the kind of help that girls need to pre- serve their health end their good looks, They bring bright eyes, high spirits and thus make the day's duties lighter. Miss Alexandrine Bedard, a sten ographer residing at 36 Richelieu St., Quebec, says :---"For the past couple of years I felt my constitu- tion being gradually undermined through constant indoor work, and the great tax on my nerves through the long tedious hours over a type- writer. But it was only some six months ago that the climax came when one afternoon I lost consci- ousness through extreme weakness. The real seriousness of my condition was then pathetically apparent, as I was confined to ray room. lacking even the strength to walk about. I was attended by a doctor, but af- ter being a month under his caro showed no signs of improvement. It was at this stage that one of my relatives read of the cure of a young girl whose case bore a striking re- semblance to my own, by the use of Iir. Williams' Pink Pills. I began the use of these Pills the next day, and attribute my complete recov- ery entirely to them. I had not taken more than three boxes when I began to get better, and after tak- ing the pills for about a month I felt as strong and was enjoying as good health as ever in. my life." You can get Dr. Williams' Pink Pills from any medicine dealer or by mail at 60 cents a box or six boxes for $2.50 from The Dr. Wil- liams' Medicine Co., Brockville, Ont. Woman Rip Van Winkle Awakens From Long Nup. .A most remarkable case of a wo- man who has slept steadily for thirty-two years, is reported in "Der Tag" form Oirns-Monteraes, near Stockholm, Sweden. Karoline ICarisdatter was a school girl of 13 when she suddenly full asleep over her books in the school- room. After fruitless efforts on the teacher's part to rouse box the girl eras carried horns. She slept until last week, when she awoke to find that her child- hood and girlhood were long past, and that she is now a middle-aged woman of 45. Fra_uloin Karisdatter is not very much worried over the matter, how- ever, She feels as fresh and as full. of energy as if she had merely en- joyed a good night's rest. Her chief concern at present is to make up for lost time and com- plete her education, which WES so abruptly interrupted. She 'will join an elementary school as soon as the Autumn terra begins. WO]IUEN OYSTER GATHERERS. litany have Made Small Fortunes at the Work in France. The work of oyster collecting and culture is most unsuitable for wo- men, but in France, owing to its tedious nature, it does not appeal to men. Often from an early hour in the morning till late into the evening the women are standing up to the knees in water, with a strong sun beating down on them. The result is that never a year passes without some of them going mad and having to be hurried away to the asylums, The work is well paid, as indeed it ought to be, while in the case of the few who own beds the profits are large, and small fortunes are quickly amassed. BOTH IN. "We get some sad cases," said the attendant at the lunatic asylum to the visitor, and opened the door of the first cell. Inside was a man sitting on a stool and gazing vacantly at the wan. "Sad story," said the attendant; "he was in love with a girl, but she married another man, and be lost his reason from grief." They stole out softly, closing the door behind them, and proceeded to the next inmate. This cell was thickly padded, and the man within was stark, staring mad. "Who is this 1" inquired the visi- tor. "This," repeated the atteliclant— "this is the other man." A SPLENDID PRESCRIPTION For Rheumatism and all Kidney, Liver, Bladder and Urinary • Affections. An eminent physician has used the fol- lowing prescription in his practice for a number of years and found it very sue• cesslul in the treatment of kidney, liver, bladder ar.d all urinary affections, and is unsurpassed for the cure of rheumatism, driving the uric acid entirely from the system. He claims that a very few doses will relieve the most severe pains In the back arising from disordered kidneys and impure blood, ' The prescription is one ounce of sweet spirits of nitre, one ounce of compound Vi, nso and four onnecs of syrup of rha- barb, mixed together and taken in dessert- spoonful doses after mealsandat bed- time in water.' The ingredients are harmless and inex- pensive and can be obtained at any re- liable drugstore and miked together at home. The young girl's air was pensive. "To -morrow," she said, "Reginald will conduct mo to the altar. There," she added, smilingly, "Ms leadership will end." One of the most remarkable dis- coveries on record will again be shown in the Process Building at the Toronto Exhibition. Last year people 'wondered at seeing a shoe polished with the "Nugget" Polish and immediately afterward washed, without the water destroying the shine, or causing the polish itself to ruf off and soil the .clean white towel, with which the shoe was 'wiped. The "Nugget" Shoe Polish is on sale at the usual price, 100,, at all dealers and is now tine popular ar- ticle, as in addition to being water- proof the shine lasts longer, and the polish keeps the leather soft and pliable, which prevents the shoe from cranking. Wlien at the Exhi- bition we invite you to have your shoe shined free of charge in the Process Building. TEE USUAL PROGRAMME.
