THE CAPI:LINE.
Although the exaggerated pompadour
f0undat:ous and absurd extravagances
in lake hair no longer al+a indulged in
by smart women, yet the fashitonable
culeure really requires as much if net
inure attention and care than the form-
e• more conventional style 01 hair dress-
ing. The lines and effects, which ap-
(pear to be the acme of unstudied grace,
r,/'ro not easily obtained and retained.
Storing the early past of the winter so
Much false hair was used to pad and
'piece out" one's own locks that the
coiffure simply had to stay in place.
But with the decree that false hair, or,
at least, a groat part of it, must go,
the prabiom of having a well groomed
head became a dilfcult one, especially
for an evening rer theatre toilet.
Hats are so largo that it is almost
impossible to wear them without crush -
Ing the hair, Locks have been burned
and "chewed" with time mane]. iron.
Hair ornaments, while neither so largo
nor .eccentric as formerly, are more
dainty, and so crush easily.
11 really seemed that the dreadful situ-
ation could not be bettered until some
smart women introduced the "cape-
t:ne," which really is the old-fashioned
"snood" slightly changed, Many of
these coquettish cupelines are being
made of dainty lace ruffles, heaped lege
in pyramid fashion with as many as
sixteen loops of soft satin ribbon on
one side.
A particularly faseinnting capeline,
voluminous in size, shows •a lovely
shade of shell pink silk lining throng&
the lace. Wide bands of ribbon are
run through the lace, around the floppy
crown, and tied under the chin in a
soft bow with long ends. Roses of chit.
fon and sill( give the finishing touch to
this charming creation.
Another style more suited to an older
woman was mach of black Chantilly
lace over a foundation of white ehiffon,
AL the left side of the capeline a spray
of roses, consisting of a gold rose de-
licately tinted with violet, a rosebud,
and gold leaves colored a soft green.
The effect of this ]readdress was won-
derfully beautiful on the tall, handsome
middle aged woman who were it.
Slightly more practical are the latest
Importations from Paris—cape.'-nes of
marabouts—that soft, fluffy feature •o
fashionable during the /all season for
stoles and muffs. While this style of
emend is thicker and less delicate than
the lace or ret capeline, yet the effect
is just as dainty and becoming. They
come in .pink, blue, lavender, and while.
A particularly fetching model which
would not show wear as quickly as the
more delicately teemed ones is of a sett
brown shade 01 marabout with a pure
white lining. Instead of being finished
at Ile front w,th rfbbans, several strands
0i marabout ante brought down the
front in a wide stole effect. For a cold
night there:• Marabout capellnes are par-
ticularly well l.ked, as tree sett, downy

For the debutante. eupelines made of
net or of accordiett plaited ruffles ase
popular. Wien thew charming head-
dresses are amide at home they prove
much lees expensive than if bought fn
the shops. Tinie and patience are need-
ed for making these snoods. Ler the nu-
merous ruffles of lace, net, or chiffon
have to be newel to the foundation by
hand. If the hair Le soft and flattens
down easily it is hest to wire the cape -
line, but if one has the kind of hair
that "stays where it is pal;' as a bak-
er/eve remarked, lovely, lines can be
obtained by letting the snood fall lcose-
iy and gracefully around the face.
The eareline ens proved .popular not
only because it 1.- Lashtonable, but also
r:n account cf its beccmingness. The
enft, frilly hies and nets lend to sefien
the lined of the fare and give a youth-
ful appearance to faces that have last
sr:me of their freshness.

1:XTRAQRDINARY INTELLIGENCE EX.
WHITED 114 PARIS,,
Only One peg Out of Nineteen Acts
the Coward and Refuses

Qt'ite an unusual eight WO witnessed
the other day err the race count of
Vfneernles, Franca. instead of steeple-
(ha1ers ur trotting horses, with their
multi -colored jockeys, rho passage, or
inclosure, was taken up by a curious
collection et pollee dogs and their mas-
ters or trainers. The "Club Francais
du Chien de Defense, ole Garde et de
Police;' an entirely private associa-
tion 4.,1 amateurs, had obtained permis-
sion do use the race course for a series
of experiments, to wit ali the police au-
thorities were invllod. The ground was
frozen, and the immense plain of the
largest Taos course near Paris lool'(ed
like a piece of some remote desert.
About fifty persons in all, including
three lasbtanable women, had come to
witness the trials, which were to con-
sist, first in a test of the dog's obedi-
ence and intelligence, He was to walk
quietly beside his master, held in e
leash, and ellen loose, to explore the
ground, sit on guard, crouch down In
concealment, or bark at -the word of
eommand, Rolf was told 10 bark, and
a deep rhythmical sound carte mut of
his throat three (fines, as if he 'under -
stool exactly how many times was
sufficient for the occasion. All the
dogs tent, through the first part of the
pnngramme with success.
THE ALAN AUNT.
The most interesting trials next were
the man hunt cud arrest 01 supposed
burglars. Two men were dressed up
as Apaches (toughs). They were thor-
oughly padded from head to foot with
mattress -like coverings, and well did
They need them, for the dogs took their
business in earnest, Each man also
wore an Iron mask and a steel helmet,
a- well as iron gloves. A dog was first
k10 to escort one of the prisoners le a
given place. He marched close at his
side, and woe to the man if he made
the slightest attempt le escape.
The dog would snake a fierce hound
al him and throw him down in an in-
stant, catching, as a rule, the mattress
padding where it was thickest, and
burying his teeth viciously in the man's
supposed flesh.
An armed attack was then represent-
ed. A man representing a burglar
crouched with his back against a wall,
stood concealed, armed with a club and
a revolver. The trainer came along
with his dog, and was not supposed
to see the man in concealment. The
imaginary burglar suddenly pounces
out on him, fires a shot and catches
the man by the throat. The police dog,
however, hardly gives him time. In
an instant he seizes the man and bawls
him over, belaboring htm at the same
time with his teeth. The man is al-
lowed to use his rlub as best he can
0u the dog's back, but tea animal easily
has the better of him, and the blows
only stimulate his vigor.
ONE ANIMAL COWARD.
Only one animal out of nineteen, a
German sheepdog, refused battle, and
acted as coward. All the rest perform -
e' their part with powerful conviction,
and it may well be surmised that a
real burglar, though armed with club
and revolver, would have fared very
badly under such an attack. Seven
dogs especially distinguished then)
selves by their clever and almost scien-
tific behavior.
The best of all seemed to be a big
mastiff called Careen, who has been
for some lime already in the police ser -
0100 01 Roubaix. Prizes have been of-
fered by H. Clemenceau, the Premier
iviro takes a great interest in these ex-
periments, and by M, Lepine, perfect

Astrologers Foretell All Sorts of Calami-
ties for the Present Year,
If astrologers, especially those who
foretell the happenings of a year before
Ill birth, really believe their own pre-
dictions, they must have none but the
gloomiest et 011110 les for the yeer 1005,
end must, indeed, be 11186101)1e men.

hles, disease and other treebies, are all
peediel00 for the coining year, The peke
of wheat will bo high, Says sae astrolo-
ger, and there will be a failure of root
crops.
One astrologer predicts :—
"The year 1005 is likely to prove one
at the most fateful in the history of
England. Tluee major planets, Neptune,
Uranus and Saturn, will hold cardinal
signs, and be responsible for the devel-
opment of great political crises. On the
third of January there will be a total
eclipse of the sun in the sign of Capri-
corn, This falls close to the position of
Mars in the royal horoscope, and as
Capricorn rules India, we mey loot( for
an outbreak of sedition and revolt in the
peninsula,
"Uranus continues in the sign of Cap-
ricorn and in opposition to Neptune in
Cancer during the next two years, the
result being that New Zealand and Bri-
tisli South Africa, India and Egypt will
perhaps be the scenes of sedition and re-
volt.
The position of the Government will
be tremendously assailed and effectually
undermined in the spring of 1908. Mr.
Joseph Chamberlain will effect some
signal successes in July, and, given a
continuance of the present improvement
in Ms health, I judge that he will be a
most prominent figure in the administra-
tion of affairs. Saturn will than be sta..
tionary in the horoscope of the present
Government."
FATHER'S ECZEMA AFFLICTED
CHILDREN.
Mr. Chas. Noble, of 375 Colonial
Avenue, Montreal, the assistant thiel
operator of the G. N. W. Telegraph
Co. and several of his family have been
cured of eczema by Zam-lluk, the great
herbal balm. He states the facts as
fellows: "The disease started in the
back of my hands in the form of small
sores and eruptions. These were very
irritating and when rubbed and
scratched turned into very painful
sores. I tried waters, leitons and
salves, but the diseases continued to
spread and so I consulted a doctor. He
treated me for a time, but still the dis-
ease spread and I got no relief. Then
to my alarm the eczema spread to sev-
eral of the children. The pain and ir-
ritation in all our cases was very great,
and v:e were very much disheartened,
es all we tried proved unavailing. Z.am-
Bue was recommended and 1 obtained
a supply. I tried 11, first on a small
batch ot the eczema, and this showed
so much improvement that I was con-
vinced Zatieleuk would do good if per-
severed with, and therefore obtained a
supply. Each application greatly re-
lieveci the itching, pain and Soreness,

taken this disease were heated in the
