SEASON CLOSED AUSPICIOUSLY. The Victory Celebrated Saturday Evening in Royal Style. WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH BRUSSELS ? Joan BILL/NOS SAID 1.— "1 Luv the Rooster for Ws Crow and the Spurs he has to back it up." After a long and strenuous season in the Western Football arena, Brussels' well known intermediete team landed the silver cup for the third season, no mean honor considering the fine clubs they had to compete with such as At- wood, Listowel, Walkerton, Clinton and Plattsville. In, every battle Brussels won, not by luck nor favoritism. but by clever, con- sistent and competent ball playing only three goals being scored against them in the entire series. The team held well together througbout, often at considerable personal sacriOce, but were well and cheerfully supported by large crowds both at home and abroad, Thetsturdy bunch consisted of James Anderson, the always reliable goal keeper ; Wellington McDonald and Alex. Anderson, fell backs, who filled their posts like a stone wall ; Russell Brown, Oliver Querin and Win. Stevenson, the half back trio not sur- passed by half backs on any team, and Richard Cardiff, W. Miller, James ;McGillivray, Archie McLeod; and Ed. Kerley, who on the forward line won many a victory with neatness and despatch. Like Alexander, of old, the boys looked round for other worlds to conquer after securing the W. F. A. silverware, They decided that the Provincial cup would be theirs, so after it they weut. There were five teams in the fight. Green River trim- med AllEaints, of Toronto, 5 to o in a sudden death game. Stamford defeat- ed.Niagara Falls after two tie matches. Brussels put Stamford out of business by 3 to 1 and then buckled with the cocky Green River eleven, the hottest of the season, whom they chastised by 3 to 1 on the round, thustwinning the coveted laurels without much difficulty. The town decided to accord the victors the recognition they deserved, so on Saturday evening they were met at the depot on their arrival from Tor- onto by hundreds of citizens, with torches and carriages tastefully decor- ated with Rags, bunting, and Chinese lanterns. Wingham's well known cornet band led the procession, follow- ed by cabs with the town Council, victorious football boys, the young ladies baseball and tennis teams, the tankard bowler wieners and other rigs, while scores of brooms afire lighted up the darkness. A halt was made at the Tows Hall, where Reeve Leckie, Manager Bal- lantyne and Editor Kerr, of THE Pose, made brief, congratulatory speeches, complimenting the team on their series et brilliant victories during the season. Lusty cheers were repeat- edly given tor the champions, the officers of the club, the baseball girls, the speakers of the evening and the band. The streets were lined with a cheer- ing crowd and the town bell rang merrily. The performance was brought to a close by a choice progratn by the band, concluding with the National Anthem, Everybody was pleeteed and the honor done the team was certainly well deservtd. A proposition is 011 toot to place something more tangible in possession of each of the players who did so much to keep Brussels so prominently before the Ruble:, It Is only fair to say that Charlie Bevels and Wm. Henderson, the reserve members of the team, proved themselves conmetenFto travel in fast company and will be beard front later. If any oue should ask "What's the matter with Brussels ?" there's only one answer and that is "Brussels is all right 1" with the accent on the last word, While so matt, plaudits have attended their almost unsurpassed dectded victories, the lads are still able to wear their own hats. Brussels citizens are proud of their champions and believe they won only and always on their merit, THE GAME AT 10IARKHAA.6 Last Friday morning Brussels Foot Ball team left by the 7 o'clock train' with Markhatn, so miles from Toronto, as the objective point where they were billed to meet tbe Green River experts in the return and final Match for the Ontario chart:me:mettle. The Queen city was reached abitett nowt and et 4.30 a start was made for the scene of battle which was sighted at 5,3o. By the time the boys walked from the depot to the hotel and got into their uniform and down to the Agricultural Park the bell had rung for 6 p. m, Green River was already on deck backed by a large number of lusty supporters who were anxious to make themselves be- lieve that the tables wetted be turned on the score of the previous game Whett they were trounced to the tune of 3-o at Brussele, Referee Woodward of Toronto, was Mester of ceremonies and throughout the play performed Itis difficult task with fairness and showed his acquaintance with what constituted good ball. He soon had the sphere in motion but outside of one flake score neither ;side counted from start to finish. The make up of the grounds rather bothered our lads for a little time while their opponents (who only live 5 miles distant) had played an it on Ettore than one occasion previously. It was a red hot mile -a -minute sort of a match in which Green River showed a dogged deter- mination of redeeming themselves but despite their most strenuous efiorts, and the encouragement of their "rooters," Brussels met their advances of both kick and "obeff" with a vigor that proved they had no notion of permitting the championship to go to the Eastern hamlet and when the whistle of the Referee announced that time was up Brussels was winner of the round by 3 to t. Our boys should have at least tied tbe score Iv day evemng as a number of good 1* hes were made on the goal of their op- ponents but their sbotoing was hl,rdly as good as usual and part of the match Green River was playing it men against to as one of our team was given a job at the fence by the Referee for a short time. It was no doubt a disappointment to Green River to fail in the finals but they will bave to ex- cuse Brussels this time and perhaps in rock they may fare better. Cheers for Green River and Referee were given when a rush was made to the hotel for. supper and then a dash for the ststeon to catch the 8.tg train back to Toronto where we arrived shortly after g p, m. It was a long tiresome day, brightened by the fact that Brussels was victorious and that a very busy hustling season MIS dived most satis- factorily. CHALLENGE FROM GREEN RIVER. Teesday's Toronto World contained the following very "sporty" note 1— "The Green River Shamrocks are now resting as easily as possible, regardless of their laueele lost to Brussels, that included the Intermediate Assooiatiou foot 'ball championship of Ontario. They were right royally entertained at Brussels a week ago, where they will tot admit tbat the best team won, though the score was 3 to o against them. The first goal was put through by their own little goal keeper, who seemed to start with stage fright. The second was from an undeserved penal- ty kick and the third came in the sec- ond half from a Brussels player off side. Green River beat Brussels at Markham s to o. Now the Shamrocks would like to meet Brussels again for a cue on any neutral ground in Toronto next week, when half fere railway rates will be in vogue from Brussels to To- ronto. What does Brussels say ?" You dear little gotten's, how bard it is to satisfy you, When we walloped yen 3 to o you kick about it and wipe out the victory without even asking the con- sent of Referee Ward. Tbeu you scored a fluke goal at Markluun and still you have bad cramps. Buy et all. day suckers, boys, and ehjoy yourselves and don't be silly /about another meta on neutral ground. If wo met we Might spank you by 7 to o. You will teem et few things about true sport later ou and will get over having sore beads, In the meantime we have the champienship. Tra la, W. I -I. K.ERR, Prop4 LITTLY 1.1011, 11110, 1/G1T1111 ! for Braseeis, V000gInonr Saud play well, "Cock -a. doodle-rio!" Is this good vuough tor you ? 17 goals to 3 is It good enough season's record to travel ou. The team will likely be photograph. ed before diebanding for the season, one followed the game, at Mime or Marotta more zealously time George. Brown, There was a great cleaning out of brooms Saturday eight—all for the good of trade, Will the Green River team kindly put their fingers in their ears while our rooster crows mice. Even Green River acknawdged that sorne of our team could.play fast ball. We guess they were right as Is of them can do that very thing. Brussels foot ball experts were in- creased when Gordon McDonald be- came a resident of town. He was well and widely known as n nifty manipula- tor of the pigskin sphere. Although a big risk is run in the liability to accident by a fall or me - Beton with other players our boys went through the series 01 games with - o01 500' serious lay -outs. nicked fellow at Markham said the big B oo the blue sweaters worn by Brussels stood for bull but they were informed that it meant bully— the kind ef ball they played. The 0907 officiary, in the persons or A. ti. MacDouald, President : R. D. Cardiff, Secretaryerreasurerand COUP. cillor Ballantyne, looked carefully after the business of the team and close up tbe season clear of debt. At the game in Markham we noticed Arthur Hawksbaw and 0. M. Pease, formerly of the Standard Bank, Bees- sele, now of Markham •, Roy Ainlav, Will Zilliax and Lorne Pringle, of Tor- onto, former Brusselites. Our team duri not suffer by their presence. The &tinsels constituting the car- riage load that went to the depot in the parade Saturday night were :— Margaret Ament, Eva McCracken, Pearl Lowry, Ida Wood, Flo.
