Blom days were called up last week by the demiee of Mrs. Mae, Liudesy, of Toronto, who was the eldest daughter of the notable and historic Wm. Lyon Mc- Kenzie. She was with him in the stir. ringldeye of the 1837 rebellion. AFTEa the direful revelations of Chicago peaking boucles aopersione were oast ou the tidiness of salmon Deaneries in British Columbia but len inspector hoe gone through these institutions and de. Mares they are well looked after se to ole0nlineee, &e. A NEW role is now on the program at Toronto where s parson is tieing water from the celebrated river Boyne in baptizing children. It tbey dou'6 grow up loyal followers of Slug William all signs are likely to fail, We have known inetanoee where the Jordan's waters were utilized and the pertioipante did not appear to poseeee more than the ordinary gifte and graoee. POePEOTs Were never better ter a good crop to theWest than this year. Farm hands are ecoroe notwithstanding the feat that eo many mea have gone into the ooantry. Ontario also rejoieee in expectation and realization of an aband• ant crop. The outlook for good timee is most hopeful and ae Canadians we ought to be a thankful and happy people. Ten Old Boys' Reunions are getting bo be me oommo0 tie June weddings and are being worked from the eooial home gatheringe to horse races, Caledonian games, sham fights, Band competitions, &o. If variety rsthesPi tie of lite then we moat assuredly be having it. One deplorable phase to some of these g ather- i,ge ie the drunken origiee enaoted at some places. The eooial renni0ne are deligbtfal but when they resolve them- selvee into exhibitions of giving full away to depraved appebitiee they beoome a bane and a sorrow to many a heart, Fraternity is to be reoommeoded bat so is sobriety and bhe development of the beet traits of true manhood. Tea time hae arrived when Brneeelitee should wake up to the necessity of a suited and yigor009 move to set some industries on foot to aid in the growth and development of the place. We need a small foundry and machine ebop, a furniture foolery and a good oaouiog factory, and in addition a hustle in every induetry in the plane. Brnseele is a snug well built village, bleeeed with an A 1 agricultural die1riot se its eorronndinge, peopled with a thrifty going lot of farm- ers, but this should be our growing time. If we rest on our caro and expect some mireoulone iofinx of trade and population we will find oar8elvea drifting away with the tide and in the e0d dieappoititment aud lees. Let us arouse and buckle into it. We require more houses and Chia oleos tip r,0 avenue for men who have nuiuveeted capital. We should speak words of encouragement to the meg in baeineee who are doing their beet to keep the town on the up grade, but above all this we require a one.miudednese in Batting agoing or aiding in their location of ag employing euoiee. These need not elementarilybe mammoth 000 tie bat co r ms0ufaotaries within out' mob regoiriDg lege °epits] to manage and more likely to 80oueed. Commencing on Friday morn- ing, July 27th, at 8 o'clock, every citizen of Bree8ele should arrange their program to talk this g0eetion ap ; correspond with outsiders who might join us in there euterprise0; and be ready to take hold of workable euhemee by the ioveatment of a few dollars. Wind is all right in its place but oaeh is more emeential when it Domes down to real busieeoe, Every taxpayer is interested lu thie and Bo is every farmer within a radius of 10 or 15 miles for the growth and development of Brns• eels means a better and bigger market and a larger consumption of all that goes to make up life. TIIE 80110011 FOR TIIE OLANID AT ERANTFOILD. To the Editor of Tag .POST: DEAR Sea :-I ask your assistance to enable me to get into oommanioation with the parents or gnardiane of all the blind children in Ontario, under the age of twenty-one years, The In• slitaliou for the Ednoation and In. sanction, of the blind, maintained by the Ontario Legislature, admits as pm pile "ell blind youths, of both sexes, between the &gee of maven and twenty. one, not being deficient in intellect), and gree from disease or physical in• firmite', being residents of the Prov. Moe of Ontario." It i0 not neoee8ary that the applicant shall be totally blind ; the out ie inability to "read ordinary type and Attend a school for the 90eing without 80rioae injury to the night." The Thula- difficulty ie to lucid° the obildreo who are eligible for admietion, and it will be helpful in the feteto if your readers will Bend me the names sod addresses of blind children under seven; ae well as of thooe between Bevan and twonty'one. Send me the names and addreeee, and I will by correspondence or visite• tion do the rest, H. F. GARDINER, Priuoipal 0, I. B. Brantford, July 20, 1000. DR, CHISHOLM, M. P„ ON THE L0RD'ti DAY RILL, MR. SrEAEER :-I wish to say a few words with regard to bhie crouse, I think (here ie a great deal of truth in the remark wbiob the gentleman wbo has jamb eat down (Mr, eGervaie) made with regard to local habits and ouetome, and I think we should give 000eiderable attention to these things, From the tone of the distillation I iofer that hon, geutlemen on both sides. of the House are fairly well agreed in regard to the general prinoiplee of Sabbath obeervanoe. The diffioulty seems to be in the Rppliaatiou of the details of the Bill, its different olaasee and sections, the different looali_ ties and (defeat' of people with whom we have to deal iu the Dominiou of Oau• edit. This manse which tee have under ooneideratiun at the preeedt time eeeme to lack a very essential end broad prin. 0ipie chat should go with it, and I think that the Bill might be so redrafted 0e to i0olnde 011220P rind le. To chow that P there is ft broadrind le wbiob ie not P P involved in the Bill at all, and one that would he aooeptable to the various and different portions of the Dominion, you will notice that a few (aye ago the hon. member for Brantford (Mr. ()onkehutt,) who is a representative from Ontario, a Protestant and a Coruervative, ee000ded an amendment that wee made by the hon. member for Lobell (Mr, Booraeea,) who 18 a repreeeoiative of Quebec, a Rumen Catholic and a Liberal. Now a principle that these coo men could adopt would be a broad priooiple, and it should have been inoluded in the Bill ; the Bill bae never baso properly drafted or it would have embraced a principle which is as broad in its application as that. Again the hon. member for Labelle (Mr. B ureses ander aertai0 o dt i 0 0 D t Un0 wee ,) willing to aooept an amendment pro- posed by the hon. member for Leede (kir. Taylor.) That shows that there i0 a prinoipl8 whioh le not involved in it. It appears to me that the Bill has far too many details, too many olaoeee, and too many exceptions. 11 is improperly drafted. It is like an attempt to build a hones from the top instead of the bottom. It seems to me that this Bill should have a great deal more local elate tieity. It should be so constituted, eo framed, that it would command the re• epeet and support of the public and of the -coal authorities in the different parte of the Dominion. After all, they are the parties who moat inforue and administer this law if it ie nob to beoome a dead letter, I can see very easily that thio Sabbath legislation is a very, very difficult problem. Canada 0onbain8 a great many different ranee and creeds. It ie nearly as large 0% the whole of Europe ; in fact 1t is eo ex. teoeive tbab it is larger than the six days in the week. 1t is eo extensive that we might be pnoiehiog a poor Jew in Halifax for a crime whioh he had oommiteel 030100t Sabbath observance, while owing to the differeooe in time, the people of Vanoonver or Victoria could be going about their deity labors. People i❑ Vancouver would still have a few hours of the Saturday when the people of Halifax would be obeerving the Sabbath end when parties there might be criminals for breaking the Sabbath. That ohowe that there suet be a oertain amount of local elasticity in this Bill. It meet be broad enough at least to make four hours difference in the application of the Bill. I believe the Bill ehonld be first re• drafted as to snit different provinces. I reigbt say that I am perfectly tore that in the pert of Ontario which I have the honor to represent the people will never be eatiefied with a Lord's Day Bill that actually legalizes and permita games of baseball, orioket, football, hockey, golf, and so on. They will never be eatiefied with that, It will be very difficult for them to appreciate the fine line whioh Oppe0r8 to be drawn between games play• ed for amusement and those played for gain. Bey opi0io0 ie that we meet have a oertain amoa0t of local elasticity in thio Bill, and I think that the present dismission and the amendment which i0 enggeeted in oonneotion with this Manse will result in that being seoured. There are other parte in the Dominion where they are not so etriotin regard to these things 0e in my conetituenoy, and I can tee very well by the dieouesion, eo far as it bae gone, that even the members of this hoose are not aware of the ohaogiog conditions that axial] in different parte in regard to the keeping of the Sabbath day. I BROW there ie a great differentia in the rales and regale• tions with regard to keeping the Sabbath since I was a boy, I can remember for sixty years, and I can well remember bow etriotly it was kept then. There bee been a great change io the last len years, and there is no doubt that is one remain why the Sabbath is not so rigidly kept by different people in the different localities aeoording to their religious and their ooneoleatioas 000viotiooe. The local anthoritiee in the different parte of the Dominion should be given some little liberty in regard to the enforaement of thio law, for ae I said it ono never be enforced anleee it hae the sympathy and eapport of those who are to administer it. I am like the bon, member for Balton (Mr. Henderson,) if I bad my way I would like 10 eee Ghia legislation kept ae neer to the Fourth Commandment as possible. But I do not wish to impose my opin ion on others who have different ideas, I was in the city of Quabea not very long ago 00 the Sabbath and I was very mach pleased to see, daring the forenoon, bow strictly the Sabbath was kept. It wag far batter 11031 in tbe city of Quebec op to one o'olook is the day than It fe kepi in the city of Toronto. I do not say anylbiog about the wee, it was kept afterwards, But let tie have some regard for local conditions. We cannot pet the same coat on every man In this Honee, If you tried to put my coat on the Hon. member for Brookville (Mr, Derbyshire) be would think he had got into a attune Packet, while some other Monitore of the House might feel like the Iriebman who u,.,rw+o,uwswwoa,• - .-..,..-,- nrwe.,>satrxva. tlric• m-.uww.-...... said hie coat fitted him ell over and never touched him. That is the wee, with this B111. Wo meet not try to make a otter iron Bill to suit everybody. Qu the other band if the 30060um00 tried to please everybody they will please .no• body. Now if we have the religious question altogether, We should have a day of reef, Nature requires a day of rest, 130 may brittle the laws of the land and avoid detection and punishment, but if we break the lawe of Nature there ]e no way of eeoape, we meet pay the penalty. There et another thing. If we du not en loroe a careful observance of the Sabbath in different looalitiee according to the opinions of the people who reside there the millionslres and mouopoliets in thio oou0try will aeon have things mauipulat• ed iu eu011 a way that the poor man Will be compelled to labor seven days in the weak to obtain a living, Be will be given no more time to prepare for the future, tither of tbie world or for the uext, The great corporations appear to be the principal objectors to thie 13111, end I am oat sore but we have yielded to them too mnoh. I believe the Bill is improperly drafted eo far as their in, termiteare concerned. At the game time, we mast remember what, has often been said, oorporatione have no souls, no oonseience9 and no hereafter, therefore I suppose wo need not assume that they have very many eoruplee in regard to a matter like this. Their altar is a golden one dedicated to money and larger dive lends. Oa 11 meet be eaariiloed every lofty priuoiple, every tender eentimeut and every religious aorople. A strict observance of the Sabbath interferes c 'vith trade and the aaoumalatiuu of money, therefore I suppose it meet be aaorifioed. Now a strict obeervanoe of the Sabbath is not only a religious bac a phyeioal ueoeesity. No nation bee long oontinned to prosper that hae not observed it, Think of the mental, the moral and the physical differenoee which separate the Sabbath keeping Sootfrom the heathen nations of the Lest. The ancient Jews and Ieraslilee were physloallylaud morally far above their eurroundiug and oontem porary nations, and at the time of the oreeedee one Christian soldier was con• eidered a metol for three or four Ser. miens. We all know that Oromwell'e Sabbath keeping Ironsides were simply At h time the people of iuvi0oible tbe e 0 P P France tell into infidelity and revolution the made an effort to establish ever tenth day a day of rest, but they were soon oompelled to return to the keeping of the Saubaeb. At the time gold wee dieouvered in California it was proved oonolueively that daring the overland jooroey of neariy 3,000 miles, tboee who rested during the Sabbath day not only reached their destination e000er, bot in a far better condition than those who travelled seven days in the week. Then take the o0ee of the modern Jew wbo has been in the habit of keeping not only our Sabbath bat his own also. 1. am sere it lea well known teat that he is able to save more money in five days of the week than an orlinary mac can in six or seven. do well is 011fe hnowu that to be tie rich as a Jew hae become a proverb. However, I fear that as the Bill is now dratted, unless there are improvements made in it, some Manses will open the gate of theme who wish to desecrate and dishonor the Lord's Day. The original 13111 was weak enough surely ; but it was strung compared with the erase. °elated remnant of it that is presented to us today. I think the government should redraft the bill entirely, and I am sure that with the immense majority they have, they could well do so. I would like to see it made eo 0e to fit a little better the different looalitiee and to snit a little better the different opinions that are abroad, I thiuk with the immense majority the government has and with the oo0a0rreuoe of gentlemen ou this aide of the House, they should be able to do more and give as something a little better than this, in answer to tbe enormoue number of earnest petitioners belonging to every creed and denomina• Won in Canada, who have asked for etrioter Sabbath legislation. I will eopport the Bill relootantly even now, but only on the principle that half a loaf is better than no bread, and because a few crumbs are better than nothing. g But Oert&In]Y ae it elands now, I d0 not think that it will give eatfefaotion to any part of the country, and I am ewe that it will not give eatiefaotion to Canada in general. I think it should be remodelled and reoaet, and I have uo doubt that it oan be made acceptable to the different opioione and ideas in regard to the Sab• bath. Wegare a 0hrletlan people o0 certain broad general prinatplee, bot those general prinoiplee upon which we are all agreed are not in Ibe Bill at all, 0e ie shown by a reference made to the amendment propoeed by the boo, mem• ber for Labelle (Mr, Bouraes0) while a number of minor and irritating details are pot in the Bill. In emotion 3 you have a camber of exoeptione soder near, ly all the lettere of the alphabet, and I am afraid that after you get through with thie Bill you will have mo many amendments that you will require all the figura, beeidee, to iodiaate the num• ber of exoeptone that will be asked for, I think the Bill should be redrafted. It is at preeent badly drafted and inoongra• one end I do not think it will give Batts. faction. WESTERN FAIR, LONDON. The Western Fair of London, Ont., will be held this year Sept. 7th to 15th.
