The Most Important Discovery
of the Nineteenth Century.
The future historian will tell his
readers that the most important dis-
covery of the nineteenth century --
more important than all discoveries in
the art of war, all armorclad vessels,
all guns. fortifications and .cannon—
more important than all telegraph
wires and all the applied powers of
steam and electricity—more important
than all prisons and penitentiaries—
was the discovery of the simple fact
that the roots of all wars and murders
and cruelty and crime could be cut
off by simply teaching and leading
every child to seize every opportunity
to say a kind word or do a kind act
that shouldMake some other human
being or dumb creature happier,
That on the continent of North Amer-
ica, in the city of Boston, on the 10th
day of January, 1889, was organized
the first incorporated society in the
world The American Humane Edu-
cational Society—for the specific ob-
ject of awakening the world' to the
importance of this discovery—that
through the American press, by prizes
and otherwise, it succeeded in attract-
ing the attention, sympathy and aid
of Christians, patriots and philan-
thropists of all nations—that through
the American press, by prizes and
otherwise, it succeeded in attracting
the attention, sympathy and aid ni
Christians, patriots and philanthrop-
ets of all nations --that through its
"]ands of Mercy" and an immense
free distribution of humane literatere
iteucceeded in reaching the children,.
not only in every American school,
but also in every American home—
that in all the ecboole, prizes and bor•
ors were given to those that most ex,»
celled in acts of kindness—that the
children of the criminal classes were
reached, .because every criminal, by
the oouaniission of crime, forfeited the
right of custody of his children, which
were taken by State Boards of Char-
ities and placed in sur roundingo suit-
able to make then good. citizens --that
a public sentiment was built up which
made the rich kind to the poor, the
poor kind to the riab, and all crimes
and cruelties infamous, and so in pro-
cess of time every forth of unnecessary
human and animal suffsrIng was re-
lieved, and wars, cruelty and crime
banished, because every child was
taught in all public, private and Sun-
day•sohools, and in a hundred thous.,
and free kindergartens, supported at
public expense, to make its own life
happier by seizing every opportunity
to say a kind word or do a kind act
that should make happier the lives of
others, both human and dumb, and

GEO. T. ANGEtL,
In Memoriam
(In memoriam of Edward Lepard who
died one year ago, May let, 1914)
One precious to our hearts to gone,
The voice we loved is stilled
The place made vacant in our home
Can nerrer more be filled.
More and more each day we mise him
s, Friends may think the wound is
healed
God only knows how deep our'sorrow
Lies within our hearts concealed.
How dark and drear without him
And so lonely is bur place
Oft I think I hear his footstep
And see that kind and smiling face.
When we saw our precious boy
That we tended with such care
Rudely taken from onr home
Oh how our hearts despair.
Tho your place on earth is empty
And you come to us no more
When we meet again dear Ed.
Death and parting will be o're.
His Loving Mother.

be :ening the same rod again this
year, Watch out for them.
There is no difficulty in spotting
these rods, The outside covering is a
thin sheat of copper. inside of the
copper is a strip of galvanized steel or
iron one-half inch wide and two gal-
vanized steel or iron wires about No,

around the strip and wires giving the
rod a corrugated appearance. The
steel or iron will rust out in from five
