Arbour Day.
•
Arbour Day is not observed in Can-
ada to the extent which its importance
warrants,
. The people of Canada must ever
keep in mind their dependence upon
her forests. With large areas suitable
only for forestry purposes, it is men -
tial that the value of trees and their
protection should be thoroughly leo-
pressed upon Canadians.
While Arbour Day is observed in
rural schools, and in some cityschoole,
its recognition by the general public is
not as general as it should be.
In the province of Ontario, .Arbour
Day is celebrated to a limited extent
in the schools. This is not sufficient,
however. The obervance of Arbour
Day should be general. There is need
in every part of Canada for the educa-
tion and instruction which Arbour
Day represents. The day should be
observed as a public holiday, at a time
most suited to the climatic conditions
of the Iocality. Public recognition
should be given to Arbour Day, and
the planting and protection of shade
trees, the preparation of flower and
vegetable gardens, and thorough clean-
ing up of homes and surroundings
should be advocated as special duties
for the day.
Arbour Day has its justification in
the value of trees, from whatever
point of view they may -be considered.
Nothing contributes so much to make
the world a pleasant place to live in as
trees. The true home feeling is not
satisfied without the presence of the
trees, with their shelter and shade,
their beauty of form and leaf, their
blossom and fruit, their varying
shades with the passing of the seasons,
and their fulness of colour in the aut-
umn days. They also afford homes
and shelter for our feathered friends -
the birds -during their annual visits
to us.
There is nothing which will add
beauty and value to a home or the
schoolhouse more than the presence of
trees; there is likewise nothing which
adds more to the comfort of the pedes-
trian than shade trees on the roadside.
The way may be long and dusty, but

under the cool shade of the trees re-
lief is found.
It Is to be hoped, therefore, that the
celebration of Arbour Day will become
more general; that the planting and
care of trees and shrubs around school
houses, homes, public spaces and by
roadsides may have the effects of de-
veloping a keener appreciation of the
value and beauty of trees; and that in
thus enlarging the field of Arbour Day
activities, greater interest may be
created in the the protection of our
Canadian forests from the reckless de-
traction by fire and the axe with
which they are threatene0.

Queen of Roumania,
Cousin of Kini. Uieorge,
Working for Allies
**********e.4 ******akar
F curious Interest just no`r
In the great and complieat-
• ed war sltuatlon Is the part
which is being played by
Queen Marie of Roumania,
first cousin of King George of Eng-
land, and wife of a German Vice.
Queen Marie is an Englishwoman,
and every ounce of influence she
possesses is with tbo allies towards
throwing Rouiinania's highly trained
army into the conflict against Aus-
tria, Germany and Turkey.
She was born in England before
her father succeeded to the Duchy of
Saxe -Coburg. Her father was the
the second son of Queen Victoria (the
Duke of Edinburgh). Thus it is
tl at the Roumanians in the midst
of the great European struggle are
ruled by a German king, and an
QUEEN MARIE.
English queen. It is Queen Marie,
and not the king, upon whom the
friends of the royal family depend
for the saving of the dynasty. She
is admitted to be a real power in
Roumanian affairs, and is said to
have been a valued adviser of King
Charles. Like many other royal
ladies, she "commands" one of her
husband's crack regiments, but, un-
like most of them, she is more than
honorary colonel; she has really
studied military tactics, and has
passed all the requisite educational
teeth for the rank she holds. She Is
a tactician of no mean ability, and
has actually led her regiment during
manoeuvres.
Despite all this, she has never
been able to win the whole -hearted
affection of her people. Unlike Car-
men Sylva, she has never stooped
from the throne in any of those
democratic acts which helped the
older woman to win the good will of
at least a part .of her subjects. Queen
Marie is ambitious that her children,
Prince Carol, twenty-one, and Prin-
eess Elizabeth, twenty, shall marry
into the Imperial Russian house, to
which their mother is related.
The queen, with her pro -Russian
tendencies, is the very antithesis of
a democrat. It was always easier to
approach Carmen Sylva than the
Princes Marie, just as It was easier
for the average native of humble
origin to see King Charles than
Prince Ferdinand.
Horse Sense.
A remarkable instance of horse
sense when a number of riderless
steeds, broken loose in the night,
ignored a challenge to halt, but
stopped on hearing the rattle of
rifle bolts, is related in a letter from
the front.
"We were on patrol along a dark
roadway," says a British trooper,
"when we were startled by the thun-
der of hoofs. The sound of gallop-
ing tame nearer and neater down
the road until. the time came to
shout a share 'Halt!' The horses
were almost upon us when we chal-
lenged a second time. No stop. In
a second the patrol released safety
catches and opened the cut-outs. A:
the metallic ring of the bolt sections
the horses reared back on their
haunches. Advancing with our fin-
gers on the triggers, we found the
animals were unsaddled and with-
out riders.
"Later we learned they had brok-
en out of their stable. We had no
trouble to lead them into a neigh-
boring farmyard, for they knew
what the rattle of bolts meant."
A Brave Youth.
The self sacrifice of German youth
for the fatherland takes other forma
than death on the battlefield. The
following letter from a young Ger-
man in Madrid to a friend in Berlin
which appears in the Veesiche Zei-
tung gives one incident of such
patriotism:
"You remember young Leiderer,
who was employed by a concern in
Madrid. Leiderer wanted to serve
his fatherland and endeavored to
reach Germany by way of Italy with
several other young men. 'They
were captured by the French and
sent to Corsica. Five of them, in-
cluding Leiderer, tried to escape,
but all were caught. They were
tried before a court-martial, which
rendered a verdict that the origina-
tor of the plan be shot. But not cne
betrayed the other.
"So lots were drawn, and the lot
fell to Leiderer. The brave young;
man faced death without saying :I
word. `Te died for his fatherland
without having been in the war."
