KAISER'S GARDEN NEAR THE FRONTIER London, March I. -The Russkoye Slovo just received, is responsible for this interesting eideligbt of ' th i war, which it publishes under the caption of "The Keit,er'e Garden." It indicates, according to the news• pxper, the thoroaghnese which the Germane prepared for war. A Polish magnate living in the Government of Suwalki, Poland, about two sad a half miles from the East Prussian frontier, lost his for- tune, which compelled him to sell his 16,000 -acre estate some four years ago. It was thouhgt some other local dig- nitary would purchase the property, which wase,*dorned with an ancient mansion, bat at the sale, a stranger, who gave hie name as Kleisenherger, surprised all kidders by running tbs price ep $360,000, which he paid in cash. The new owner soon transformed hie estate by a lavish expenditure of money. He appeared par ticulaely addicted so landscape gardening. He constructed new huildin.ts, improvis- ed mounds and little chains of bill; he installed an eiwborirre Nyqt:P rn of irrigation ditches, put• in merry wine cellars and capped it all by erecting a massive tower. The article continues that when the war began it suddenly developed that this wonderful garden was no- thing more or lees than a German fortress. The mounds were for heavy guns, the wine cellars for the stor- ing of armanent and ammunitiou, and the irrigation dirchee were per- fertly arranged trenches for the Ger- man soldeirs. It took two weeks for the Russian trooper to reduce and cap- ture the floral fort.ifloation, and it sort many lives. There was an elab- orate system of wireless and wire. communication from the tower, which was admirably constructed for observ- ing everything •within• a range of many . Commissioner Ola' k writing in the Agricultural War Book on **Treat. meat for Smut Prevention" says that in Eastern Canada there is consider- able smut in the grain erope each year, hut that it has not been sufficiently prevalent to make treatment for its prevention general. The losses, how- ever, are much greater than is com- monly realized, and the value of the crop could be considerably increased if treatment for smut prevention were more generally practiced.
