After the meeting, during which neither manappareutly recognttsse the other, Hargreave hurries to his mag- pilcent Riverbale borne and lays plane for cloaking his escape from the country He writes a letter to the girls' school in New Jersey where eighteen years before he had mysteriously Left on the doorstep his baby daughter, Florence Gray. Braine and members of his band sur- round liargreave'e home at night, but as they enter the house the watcher's outside see a ballon leave the roof. The safe is found empty—the million which JJargreave was known to have drawn that day gone. Tba- plan proves abortive through Braine's good luck, and only hirelings fall into the bands of the police. After failing in their first attempt, the Black Hundred trap Florence. The ytettorn having gone, Joner, removes a sention of flooring, and from a cavity tskes a box. Pur- sued by members of rhe Black Hun- dred, he ru"hes to the water front and succeeds in dropping the box into the sea. Braine conceives the idea nf giving a coaching party to which Florence is invited. Jones and Norton both go along and are fortunately on hand to save Florence from being imprisoned in the country house to which ebe is lured. Florence goes horseback riding and is captured by one of Braine'e ineu along the roadside. Norton rescue+ her. They 'are pursued, however, and the pair make their complete escape only after Norton has exploded a tire nn the fast approaching machine with a bullet.
