GERMAN MACK k'AILED
arltieh and French Troops Hold Good
Positions, Fighting Most Gallantly I
)
i French and British troops on the
;left wing have repulsed for days the
attacks of the Germans, who have
been endeavoring to take the allied
positions by assault, according to an
ofiiciai statement given out in Paris
on Monday nigt. I
• Word from the front describes the
encounters. On one occasion the
French and British held position with-'
in a quarter of a mile from the Ger-
man front, where they were not in
danger from the heavy German art
tiliery, and were sheltered from the 1
machine guns unless they cattle into
the open.
One of the most furious s f r u German
assaults turned upon the trenches
occupied by British regiments, which, i
with admirable coolness, awaited the ,
onslaughts of line after line of Ger- I
mans, meeting therm with sustained r
rifle and machine gun tire, and some,
times at the point of the bayonet,
which did great execution.
Desperate attempts made by the I
Qermans on the western end of the I
long line of battle to break tltlougll
the allies' forces which are engaged
In a turning movement ilave resulted
in the most furious fighting which lies
taltenIrme sinee the beginning of
P
the campaign. After- fighting with -
put respite night an day corps of
t:{errlrans was hurled against,- the
fewer of the )French and Englisch
itfinies on Senday, only to be thrown
traclr.
Te infantry bore the brunt of the
incessant fighting, but the artillery
pf both armies continued tllropghgtlt
the 24 hours to bonlharcl each other's

were used freely,

aigne, was to the fore, and beside
hese men fought the black Setle-
galtfse troops, while further along the
line the British troops held an im-
portant point with the greatest tle-
terminetion,
The French troops showed more
than their accustomed dash in attack,
and everywhere acts of wonderful
courage were perforined. Tho caval-
ry also participated in the engage-
ment at many points, the allies' horses
having enjoyed a long rest, which
enabled this arm of the service to
distinguish itself. The famous Scots
Greys, finding the color of their
horses afforded a prominent mark for
the German riflemen, had dyed their
mounts brown.

"MADE-IN4VINNIPEG"
Slmplo Maxims Which Every Western
Community Can Adopt For Its Use
During the "Made -in -Winnipeg"
week, organized by the enterprising
Industrial Cominiesioner of the Wes-
tern metropolis in May last, many
"slogans" were used with good results
V the keen bupineee men of Winn!.
peg, whose co-operation made the ex-
hibition such a huge success,
The following are it few mottoes
which can be adopted with slight
change for use in every Western
community:
It isn't always the sky -scraper that
Makes the city. A factory with a
big pay -roll will d4 twice as much.
Become fmpreseod with the real,
true downright duty you ,we your
city in patronizing home industry.
After all is said and done, the full
dinner -pail is the prosperity sign of
to live city.
Winnipeg believes self-preservation
to be the first law of nature, and
therefore welcomes the "Made in
Winnipeg" Weekes advocating home
industries, the --first law of a c
solid development,
Winnipeg believes that no city cap.
Continue growth upon sound found.
tion without industry, It is the city
of manufacturing that forges ahead.
Winnipeg knows that the way to
build up a local industry Is to buy
of its wares. It is a duty citizens owe
to the community. Buy the produot
t! home labor, home capital and home
tidustry:.
Wipoipeg realize@ that theye are
eighteen thousand people employed is
manufacturing goods right here in the
city, and that if we can double the
number and have the money that
these people earn spent right .here, it
goes to help the prosperity ot all.
Winnipeg knows that the purchase
of every $1,000 of goods, "Made in
:Winnipeg" instead of -purchasing out-
side, means the addition of one per-
son to the city instead of supporting
him elsewhere.
Be still, sad heart, and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still
rhinirg; -
Ttty fate is the common fate of all;
Into each life some rain must fall, --
Some days must be dark and dreary.
Deserters
ARTEMUL WARD, the famous Ameri-
can humorist, whose humor sometimes
was a lance -thrust, once said that he was
willing to sacrifice all his first wife's relat-
ions on the altar of his country. Many a
man has been willing to let others do his
fighting for him --willing, also,. to share the
•
rewards of peace and victory. Men of
this type belong to the deserter class.
In Canada are hundreds of bnsiness firms
striving with all their night to make ;better
times for themselves and their communities.
To them all honor.
But there are other firms -manufacturers,
wholesalers and retailers -who are "standing
pat," "playing safe," doing absolutely nothing
to build up business. They are mere lookers
on, not participants in the valorous struggle of
their brethren to )maintain and establish good
times,
Look about you and you will gnd in the ad-
vertising columns of this and other newspapers
many messages front firths with a sturdy con,
fidence in the future.
