Study Your Investment. Because something is offered yon for little money does not necessarily mean that it is a good investment. The value of an investment should be carefully figured on the return it will likely bring. If your Investment is in Town or City Real Lstate, there will be no profit made if the Town or city is not growing. If the Town or City is not growing or at a stand -still, property decreases, you lose. If the Town or City is growing and likely to grow and your property is in the growing area it advances at double the per- centage of increase of population. Winnipeg's Building Permits amounted to $20,000,000 in 1912 and to $18,650,000 in 1913. It kept right on growing during the hard times. The prospects for 1914 are much brighter now than they were at this time last year. Winnipeg le bound to grow, hard times or easy times. Conditions demand a great City just where Winnipeg is situated. Don't phut your eyes to the Investment Value of Hanover Place as it is on the line of the best Developing Residential Dis- trict now in Winnipeg. You may be offered lots elsewhere for less money but study closely whether they are likely to increase in value, and what is the reason for finch expected increase. Oar prices are $225.00 a lot and up according to location. Write to -day to-- THE o_..THE RELIANCE INVESTMENT & DEVELOPING CO. Ltd., HEAD OFFICE--- IHANOVER, ONT. Local Agent—William Currie, Wingham. Judges and Magistrates tell us that at least three ;fourths of 'thele cont. mittalewere due to drink. Some judges place the number as high as ninety percent, When the barrooms are closed erime almost stopP. In San Francisco, at the time if the earthquake, when the bar -rooms were closed for nearly three "months. there was not a murder, tut in a month after they were opened there were eighteen" murders. When a very large number of the bar-roome were closed in London during the dock - laborer's strike the same reduction in crime occurred. Both political parties 'in this country beast of what they have done for the promotion of temperance but the facto prove that nothing effective has- been done by either party. Kansas, Maine and N, Dakota are emptying their ja,ile, asylums and poorhouses in a wonderful way, while here the people are heavily taxed to 'provide more accommodation for the increasing out- put of the liquor traffic, Why cannot we have prohibition in Ontario? The people have voted in favor of it on two occasions by over- whelming majorities. Both political parties parade under the temperance banner and declare their intention to do all in their power to lessen this great evil yet it goes on increasing. We taik about Government by the people but in fact we are governed by the whiskey interest. The parties are so jealous of one another that they dare not oppose the business that they, all know is the greatest enemy of the country. Before prohibition we want the Initiative , whereby we can- de- mand a law on its being approved by a majority of, the people. Not till' then will we have real government by the people. H. Arnott, M. B , M, O. P. S. Woinen The Great Mystrry Fo man understands what the soul of a women is In reality. No plan hae any idea of the inner workings . of a women's heart. Men pride themselves on understanding women, but are al- ways deceived in this respect. The whole truth is never spoken between men and women, but it is not necese• ary on this account to condemn wo- men; they are never quite sincere to- wards'themselves. Men can be honor- able in dealing *ith themselves as i dealing with others, but women do possess this capacity. A women can love a man more than her own life, she can sacrifice her time her health and her life for him; but if she is a real women can never take him entirely into her confidence. She cannot take him in her confidence be- cause she dare hot. A man on the con- trary even if only for a brief period, loves without reserve. In this con- dition he allowed himself to be unlock- ed like d chese of drawers wi h many eecretrecesses. Tnen he delivers him- self and his past to the women he loves but a women never give3 more of her confidence than reason permits. Every women plays a comedy at all times of her life with smiles and tears. Smiling is a language which none hut women understand; it women tmiles at a great crisis, a woman passes over vices with a smile; and with a smile she reflects the greatest virtues, Men cannot smile at all; they are not deceit- ful enough to smile. And with the smile, so it is with tears. Tears are a gift from feature to women, and most women use them to excite themselves when they desire to create a scene. It is very easy for a woman to de ceive a man when the later is in love for when a man is infatuated with a women he beleives everything because he desires to beleive it. "The Doubt- ing Thomas" ought to have been a women, because a woman always doubt,. A shadow of doubt penetrates into her inner-most holiest feeling,, perhaps because she judges man ac - CHECK CHRONIC RBOMATINI NOW RHEUM. W. McKIBBON, 1Wingham cording to her own character, perhaps because she herself deceives. B',t this is not the case. A man becomes com- municable, while a women is secretive and that is part or the tragedy which is concealed in every love affair. They are, of course, exceptions. There are women who become truthful in the course of time. I 'cannot state that there are women who are naturally truthful. Among millions one finds one of such woman, and how blessed is tho man who finds such a wife! This one exception among millions does not need the art of comedy with which all her sister mask themselves.—Karin Michaelis. Encouraging Manufacturers Last week was "Made in Winnipeg'' weak in the Manitoba capital, and manufacturers, retailers and citizens generally co-operated to bring the 'products of local industries before e public and to urge Winnipeg people to help build up a bigger and. better city, by using goods made in local factories. The object is a most 'worthP and commendable one, and the' response which has been made by the citizens shales that western cities, as well as the Q1der cities of the East, re developing a civic pride and' a pang:stint that- will be for the of the community."—From ewers' Guide."
