every incident In which the-rallitary

sabre rule at Zaborn. The judge ad-
vocate charges Col. Van Reuter with
Illegal assumption of the executive
powerj with tile imprisonment of civ-
ilians, and the Anvasion of private
houses in order to make arrests. One
of the counts of the Indictment is that
of illegal deprivation of liberty, which
by the German code is punishable
with a jail sentence without the alter-
native of a fine.
Lieutenant Schad, one of the young-
est officers of the regiment, was the
man who, on Nov. 29, during a riot,
ordered his men to clear one of the
squares of Zaborn and arrest every"
body who stood still even for a mo-
ment. Among those taken into -custody
were geveral civilian judges of the
city. Lieut. Schad also led a squad
of soldiers to a bedroom on the E.ec- I
ond floor of a private house and there
arrested a man who had laughed
scornfully at the soldiery. Ile also
vied with Lieut. Baron'Vono Forstner,,
now in prison undergoing a sentence
for his Illegal acts In Zaborri, in dis-
playing great anti -civilian activity,
and is accused of illegal deprivation
of liberty, of wilful amriault and of dis-
turbance of the peaue.
Col, Von Reuter went onto the wit-
ness stand in his own defense. He as-
sumed full responsibility for all the
acts. of the military, and said the of-
ficers and men of his regiment had
obeyed his explicit orders. I
Most of the accused colonel's testi-
moily was devoted to an attack on the
civil authorities of Zaborn. I -Ie declar-
ed the city magistrates and police
were Indifferent, anct that the post-
men filled the officers' mail boxes
with insulting letters and cards, but
did not deliver letters in praise of

The conditions in Zaborn were un-
satisfactory before his arrival there,
said the Colonel, many brawls be-
