WORTH WHILE
(Elia Wheeler Wilcox)
It is easy to he pleasant
When life time by like a song,
But the roanworth while is the one
wh i will smile
When everything goes dead wrong,
For the teat of the heart is trouble,
And It always cows with the years.
Aad the *Mlle that is worth the
prattle' of earth
Ii the smile that shines through
tears, -
It is easy enough to be prudent
Wlien nothing tempts you to stray,
When without or within no voice of
sin
Ie luring your soul away ;
Bat it is only a negative virtue
Until it is tried by fire,
And the life that is worth the honor
on earth
Is the one that resists desire.
By the cynic, the sad, the fallen,
Who had no strength for the strif?,
The world's highway ie cumbered to,
day-
They reedice up the sum of life ;
But the virtue that, oor goers passion
And the sorrow that hides in a
smile
It is these that are worth the homage
on earth,
For we find them but once in a
while.

The Farmer's Prosperity..
There are the days when it is fash-
ionable for urban cost -of -living experts
to jatnp with both feet upon the farm-
ers for not producing more foodstuff,!,
and thus bringing down the prices.
Likewise, certain rated organizations,
such as the Grange, bewail the decay
of our once flourishing agriculture,
aid lament that wealth•accumulation
in this country is confined to the cities
a ad towns --the fruit of a robber and
cul -throat tarriff, etc. The jeremllids
fly thick and fast. If common sense
did not prevent people from taking the
objurgations too seriously we should
be inclined to say with Carlyle that all
was "neiedone or undone." But the
conditions which go to ioflate the coat
of living in the cities, especially the
larger cities, are neither the fault of
the farmers nor the product of decrepi-
tude in agriculture. It is rather re-
freshing, under the circumstances, to
note the report of the Ontario Depart-
ment of Agriculture for 1912, showing
farm production and wealth increases
to be quite up to the mark. The value
of the farm lands and buildings, itnple-
rnPnts and livestock increased during
the year about sixty mil:ions to the
grand total of $1,405,000,00. That
:850 a head for the whole rural popu
lation. Cheese and butter production
from the factories increased each by
about 2,500,000 pound4. Total pro
duction from the farm ranged about
$ 350,000,000.

Vinod makes weak stomachs strong
because it strengthens and tones up
the weakened, tired and overtaxed
nerves of the digestive organs. Vinol
is easily assimilated by the weakest
stomachs. and is delicious to the taste.

House Burned Down.
About ten o'clock Christmas nigt t
a house belonging to Geo. Nixon, of
Ashfield was destroyed by fire. There
was very nearly a fatality in connec-
tion with the fire, The house was.
Occupied by Victor Whitley and Thos.
(Iawley, who were keeping "batch."
Whitley was away and returning
about ten o'clock found the house in
flamer,. Going up stairs he discovered
his companion sound asleep in bed, all
unconscious of impending danger.
The men lost no time in getting out of
the house, which was, by this time, so
enveloped by the fire that little of. the
furniture could be gotten out. The
fire is thought to have originated from
soot in the pipes catching fere and this
being communicated to the woodwork.
