WHY
WHY DO WE LAUGH?
What is the singular phenomenon of
laughter, so reality induced and from
such a variety c' COM 'i? asks a writer
in the New York Outlook. What is
there in the words of an actor, the an-
tics of a clown or the misfortune of
another person, to provoke the peeniiar
reaction of bodily and facial contortions
and inarticulate vocal utterance, that
regarded dispassionately seems almost
repulsive? What useful purpose can
be servedrnd why s'ich an obviku3 de-
parture from the well-ordtr'd ways of
the reasoning life?
Tne common answer is that we laugh
because we ars amused, but this docs
not seem to conform to facts. Some
people laugh when they are frightened,
others when in great pain or grief, and
the laughter sauced by tickling is not
from amusement. One writer affirms
iority in the person moved to laughter,
hence no person likes to be laughed at,
Darwin defines the laughable as that
which is queer, unusual, disagreeing
with or contrary to our mental habits.
These may explain a few cases but not
the laughter caused by the kindly ban-
ter between friends.
We laugh, then, in infancy and adol-
escence, says this writer, not primarily
because we are "light-hearted" or
"amused" but to satisfy a natural in-
stinct of both physiological and psychol-
ogical utility.
Conceding, however, that the laugh-
able is and must always remain elusive,
baffling, uncertain, there need be no un-
certainty as to our view of -laughter
itself. To laugh—to laugh spontaneous-
ly and heartily --is under nearly every
circumstance a good thing both for the
body and for the mind. Like sleep, it
refreshes; like food, it strengthens.
Humanity, in truth, would be the poor-
er—and the shorter-lived—were it ever
to lose this splendid heritage of the
power to laugh,

THE TWO BARON$
Th Had a Trying Time In the Royal
Court of Bulgari',
Till he left the royal court of Bul-
garia in disgrace some time ago old
Baron Eckdorfstein, the princes' over -
governor, gave the royal children more
fun than anybody. Be was" a rigid,
fidgety old Prussian, always complain-
ing. In the early part of last year.
under the plea that his neighbor,
Baran. Bernsdorff, snored so loud that
he could not sleep. he Changed bia
rooms from the wing to the main body.
of the palace, much to the disgust of
the princes, who determined to get rid
of him.
They soon hit on a plan. Itis new
quarters were so far from the tele,
phone that he had to pass many corn,
dors and cross a large hall to get to it.
One morning he got so argent a call
that he hastened out in his pajamas.
On his way back he found the way
stopped. Each corridor and stairway
held a sentry, who solemnly declared
His Royal Highness the Crown Prince
had given orders that nobo'y was to
pass.
The princes tl>,emseives euarded two
exits, and the poor old baron spent an
awful qtt •rter of an hour rushing wild-
ly about the large hall and dodging be-,
hind pillars when a Minister passed
tl.rough on his way to the king. The
suite, hearing roars of laughter, came
to look and laugh.
The joke worked so well that the
baron petitioned the king to go back
to his old quarters that very dny. But
he grew crustier and crustier. The
crisis was reached when, furious that
a reception was going on in the palace
when he wanted to sleep, he rose,
locked all the dressing -room doors and
took the keys to his room. Some of.
the household•gave him a good shak-
ing. The king heard of it and sent
hint off on unlimited leave.
In the meantime Baron Bernsdorff,
whom h ekdorfstein had got in dis-
grace by the reports of his outrageous
summonsto

had had

to the king for weeks and weeks and
was getting quite uneasy, as the Ivan
who does not enjoy royal conversa-
tion frequently soon loses prestige at
court. But at last a gendarme came
and told him he was not to sti: from
his rooms that day, as the king might
want him.
Bernsdorff waited and waited. At
last, three weeks later, somebody -men-
tioned his name before the king, who
exclaimed,' "Good heaven, I told hien
to wait iu for me three weeks ago!"
He sent awl found the poor old Pres-
sian still waiting, Through three
weeks of c9.'rious Balkan spring wea-
ther he red not dared leave his
rooms,
