Just at the springtime, when the human sys- tem is sure to be more or less debilitated, and often at the most critical time in a girl's life. there come also the anxiety, eye -strain and mental over-exertion consequent on the ap- proach of extlia :iations. To many this extra demand on the, system proves the last straw, and the results are made known 'by headaches, sleeplessness, irritability, loss of appetite. tired, worn-out feelings and inability to eoneentrate the mind on the work at hand, whether it be mental or physical. To some there will come St. Vitus' dance, nervous prostration, or some derangement of the vital organs, which may. linger to make a life of suffering and unhappiness. The only means of averting trouble is by the use of external assistance in order to in crease the supply of pure, rich blood, and for this purpose there is no treatment comparable to Dr. Chase's Nerve Foocl. Because of its mild and gentle action and powerful restorative influences in building up the system, Dr. Chase's Nerve Food is particu- larly suited as a treatment for girls and women. Especially during the critical periods of wo- man's life, such as between the ages of twelve and sixteen, this great food eure, 'by supplying an abundance of rich, red blood, keeps up health and strength and fills the body with vigor and vitality. • Miss Cynthia Hutchinson, Hanceville, B.C., writes :—"I feel it my duty to tell what a great friend Dr. Chase's Nerve Food has been to me. I would have written sooner, but wanted to be sure I was thoroughly cured. Before using this medicine my nervous system was so completely run down that my friends, as well as myself, thought I could never get better. All medicines failed to help me. "A trial of Dr. Chase's Nerve Food benefited me, and I used altogether seven boxes. At the end of a month people scarcely knew me, I had improved so much. The blood was enriched, color improved, new flesh added, and I got strong and well. Several of my friends have profited by my experience and re- ceived great benefit from this treatment." _ Drax Chase's Nerve Food 50 cents a box, 6 for $2.50, all dealers, or Edmanson, Bates & Co„ Limited, Toronto. niamounmom YE BANKS AND BRAES. Ye banks and braes o' bonnie Doon, How can ye biume sae fair! How can ye chant, ye little birds, And I sae fu' o' care? Thou'll break my heart, thou bonnie bird, That sings upon the bough; Thou minds me o' the happy days When my fause love was true. Thou'll break my heart, thou bonnie bird, That sings beside thy mate; For sae I sat, and sae I sang, And I wist na o' my fate. Aft hae I roved by bonnie Doon, To see the woodbine twine, And ilka bird sang o' its love, And sae did 1 o' mine. Owen Sound Times: "A gentleman who ought to know drew the attention of The Times man the other day to the fact that never before had the mail or- der business been so thriving from Tor- onto to Owen Sound. Over Orillfa way there is very little mail order business done. Why? Because the Orillia mer- chants advertise the fact that they give as good value for the same money as mail order people—to say nothing of the numerous stock -taking and other sales, The Orillia merchants are extensive ad- vertisers and they have been able to fight off the mail order business. Blight on Tomatoes. Blight, a fungous disease, is in some instances a serious obstacle in tomato growing. It is first in evidence on the underside of the leaf in the form of white specks having the appearance of mold, which spread more or less rapidly until the entire surface is affected, and which, in the more advanced stages of the disease, turn brown and shrivel; in this stage of its progress too, the fungus spreads to the stems and fruit as well, frequently causing death iu the plant thus affected. Remedies must be in the nature of preventives. Bordeaux may be used with more or less success. The appli- cations should be thorough and begin in the plant beds, as it is practically im- possible to say the -progress of the disease after the fungous germs have obtained a firm hold. • Every possible means should be used to promote a strong healthy growth in plant. Anything that interferes with normal plant development affects fn« juriously its strength and vigor. Suc- 1 cessivo transplanting works in this manner, but as it is necessary to start the plants in seed beds, and make ;several tran pl n s t a ins to secure early g y !ripening of fruit, this feature cannot be avoided. But even this forbearing gentleman lost his temper when the farmer im- p udently turned his horses loose in the churchyard and refused to take them out again. High words ensued, and the vicar so far forgot himself as to call the farmer a "broken down old mule." Off went the farmer on the instant and crashed noisily into the village lawyer's office. "The vicar has just called me a brok- en-down .old mule!" he bawled. "What am I to do?" Now the lawyer had once received a severe rebuff from the farmer, and had waited for years for a chance to repay it. Here was his opportunity, and he seized it with both hands. THE WINGHAM TIMES A missionary recently returned from Buena with an amusing story of the ex- altation of a dozen patent medicine bottles to the rank of idols frequently worshipped by a whole village. On one of this lady's tours, accordiug to Youth's Companion, she passed through a small settlement, where chol- era was raging. She had with her several bottles of a famous "ready rel- ief" for pain; so she went from house to house dozing numerous sufferers, and left the bottles for the natives to use after she had gone. Returning to the village some months later, the lady was met by the head man of the community,' who cheered her pious soul by saying, Mem sahib, we have come over to your side. The magic did us so much good that we now accept and worship your gods." Delighted at this news, the missionary accompanied the man and his followers to his own dwelling, where he opened die door of a room and showed her the pain -killer bottles arranged neatly upon a sort of alter. The whole company immediately prostrated themselves be- fore them in solemn worship. Found a Oitre for liheuniatisin.
