As this :111-if,lul't:alit nerve force is cleated in the nerve centres of the brain and spinal cord, and conducted along wire- like nerve fibres to the various parts of the body, any derangement of the brain, spinal cord or nerve fibres may result in paralysis or loss of the power of movement. E la Fasralysis, glen, is the natural result of ail negrected nervous diseases. If you find yourself nervous and irritablcl, over -sensitive to light, sound and motion, addict- ed to continual movement or tapping of the fingers, twitching of the muscles, sudden start- ings and jerkings of the limbs during sleep; if you have nervous headaches or dyspepsia, are unable to sleep or rest, feel downhearted and discouraged, and unfit to fight the battles of life; if your nerves are weak and exhausted, your Mood thin and watery, you have every reason to fear paralysis of at least some part of the bogy, and consequent suffering and helplessness. Paralysis can always be prevented, and partial paralysis actually cured, by the timely use of Dr. Chase's Nerve Food. The time to begin treatment is when any of the above-mentioned symptoms become apparent. These are indications of a de- generation of the nerve cells, and when nerve force becomes exhausted paralysis is bound to follow. A.—The Cere- brum is the centre O f inir!li.;i•m••• .and thought. It is neither a stimulant to whip tired nerves to renewed activity, nor a nar- cotic, or opiate, to deaden the nerves. On the contrary, it is a food cure, which forms new, red corpuscles in the blood and creates new nerve cells. Every day it is bringing back health, strength and vitality to scores and hundreds who have become discouraged through the failure of doctors and other treatments to cure them. 'Why not get started on the way to health at once by using this great food cure ? Dr. Chase's Nerve Food, 50 cents a box, G boxes for $2.50. Doctors' treatment failed me, so I be- gan the use of Dr. Chase's Kidney -Liver Pills, which I thank for my present good health. I am now doing my house- work and have a family of ten." Sonie girls are so conceited that when a man evinces a desire to stay away from them, they think its because he is afraid of their fatal power. When the trolley invaded Bombay the excavating was done by natives armed with grubbing hoes, and the dirt was carried away in bowls. A proposal was recently before Ohio State Legislature, says John Gould, writing in Hoard's Dairyman, to enforce the tuberculin test on all cows in the Stale, and to compel the slaughter of those showing by the test the presence of tuberculosis. As there are something like one and one-quarter million cows in the State, the labour of testing calledfor under this measure would, as Mr. Gould says, have called for an army of trained veterans. The bill was so extreme, how- ever, that the opposition aroused against it proved sufficient to prevent its passage. Dr. de Van's Female Pills A reliable French regulator; never faits. St Thomas Journal. -=•-•I£ there is one thing mere than another which would have astonished the boy of thirty or forty years ago, it would have been to learn that his successors in boyhood were grave national and social problems. The boy of that period grew up under a rigid system of rule with but little indulgence. He had chores to do, and had to play with enthusiasts, swimming to learn, skating, bob-sleding, fishing in season and that substitute for hunt- ing which consists of carrying a shot_ gun over fourteen miles of stubblefield. But to -dire there is a change- in the realm of youth. 'There is a thingwhich lanai s nailer various names, such as child culture, scientific parenthood and the art of bringing up children. In a book written by a professor down east, mothers at.d fathers are told how to take their boys in hand end so train them and prune them ,that they will not become "human wrecks strewn acorn the great highway of life," cases of "missed callings' and instances re- gretting the impossibility of livingone's life all over again." It is quite true art there- have been countless thous- anes c.f "human `creeks" and "missed callings' in that generation which scrubbed its slates in violation of san- itary science, colored the pictures in I,oveli's renders with mineral pigments, drank water by preference from the edge of the well bucket, took off its clothes a half mile before itreachedthe swimming hole, played with gunpowder, ate green apples, carved sled runners out with a dull hatchet saved up pennies to buy rubber bands for slingshots, this w the wood into the woodbox in such a way that the box was decept- ively full, dodged school on spring days, went barefoot too soon and took chances with the ruffian who guarded the side- walls of circuses. The growing gener- ation, thanks to scientific culture, may escape the perils of failure. But it is a safe wager it will never compare with the fathers for orthodox health and fathomless appetite. Do not suffer another day with Itohing Bleed- ing, or lirotrud• ing Yi1os. No surgical •oper- ation required. Dr. Chase's Ointment will relieve you at once and as certainly euro you. 00e. a box all dealers, or Ldmanson, Bates & Co., Limited, Toronto. Sample box froo if you mention this paper and enclose 2e. stamp to pay postage. COOKING NOTES. Do not put salt in the water in which peas are cooked. It will cause the skins to crack. A few minced dates added to fudge as it comes from the stove will make a novel and dainty confection. The white mayonnaise made by for- eign chefs calls for cream, lemon juice and white of an egg. A cupfull of liquid yeast is equiva- lent to half a compressed yeast cake or a whole dry yeast cake. The juices from pickled fruit improve• the flavor of boiled ham, if 'added to the water in which it is boiled. The thick jellied water from rice is too good to throw away. It makes an excellent addition to soups, cream or vegetable. To restore curdling mayonnaise, put a teaspoonful of melted butter in around bottom basin and gradually work in the mayonnaise. When mashed potatoes need extra thinning, if you have no cream, use but- ter, at: too much milk makes the pota- toes watery and dark. . If salt fish is required for immediate use it will freshen much more quickly if soaked in milk instead of water. Sour milk will answer as well as sweet. HEST AND HEALTH TO MOTHER AND CHILD. MRS. Twenty -eve cents a bottle. The Refractory Door. If the door has sagged so the boltcan not run into its accustomed socket, Good Housekeeping tells us to open the door, loosen the screws in the bottom hinge and drive wooden pegs between the hinge -plate and the door. If the door is warped so that the part carrying the lock does not shut in far enough to reach the catch plate, pry off the stops or strips that are nailed to the door casings, shut the door until the bolt catches, then nail the strip back in a new position and have it close up to the door. If the door is Shrunk until the bolt will not reach far enough to catch, take the screws out of the plate and put pasteboard behind it. If the door will not shut Without turning the knob, try a drop of sewing machine oil on the sloping side of the bolt so it will slip easily when itstrikes the catch. If the door squeaks, put a drop of oil on each joint of the hinge. When the door sticks, and is bard to open, nib a bar of soap on the banging place. or a little vaseline or tallow, The above is a pk lure of "Chief Little Bow," who was probably the first inhabitant of CARMANGAY, where once the savage roamed at will, NOW the *Farmer tills the Ianal. Unseasonable clothing should be sort- ed out, repaired, cleaned, and packed away from months, and the boxes or bags labeled. The winter bedding should be aired, or washed and put in good shape for next autumn. Air everything well before packing it away. There will be many things that you will probably not need again, and these should be disposed of in some way. A few cans of ready mixed paints, varnishes and polishes should be at hand, as the paint brush is as good for the furniture as the doctor is for the family. A good thing to put away is the drap- ery—portieres are excellent dust gath- erers, and give the air a stuffy appear- ance. Put them away from the moths, For the porch pillows, have washable covers, and have them made of service- able materials. Don't wash the hardwood floor. Mix equal parts of crude oil and turpentine and rub well into the wood with a cloth dipped into the mixture. If the floor is not greasy do not wash with soap; a tea- spoonful of coal oil in a basin of water is more cleansing. When furniture needs only a good dusting and rubbing, first wash with a soft cloth and tepid water, then when dry mix, equal parts of linseed oil, tur- pentine and vinegar, and rub the fur- niture with this, a little at a time, fin- ishing with a good hard rubbing to bring out the polish.
