F DAMAGE IN
DISTRICT,
Good Friday, 1913, ill be a day long
to be remembered by the people of this
country. Wingham r ad district receiv-
ed a full share of th equinoctial gale,
which swept the wh e e North American
continent. Buildin L • were completely
destroyed, roofs fted off, electric
light, telephone a • telegraph wires
broken and tangled chimneys and trees
blown over, fence swept away, and
pedestrians driven o shelter. Fortun-
ately it was a holi :y and no person
was seriously inju• d.
The damage to . operty will amount
to many thousand- of dollars and it
would be impossib to place an estimate
on the amount of carnage done in this
section. It is saf to say that about
every second far •r in this vicinity
suffered more or 1 s damage as a re-
sult of the storm. - Friday's gale went
a long way to • ards disproving the
scientific state nt that equinoctial
gales have no fo dationin fact. March
21st is the date o the Vernal Equinox,
or when the sun apparently crosses the
celestial equator. However, the To-
ronto Observato y reports that since
1874 out of 165 g les, only 24 have oc-
curred between -he 19th and 24th of
March.
In Wingham, he storm was at its
worst between e hours of 12 o'clock
noon and 2 o'clo k. During these two
hours much da .ge was done.
The Western oundry Co., will be at
a great expense as the large mounting
shop was compl • tely destroyed. The
wind came with such force that the
roof was Carrieoff and the walls of
the building we e completely wrecked.
The roof in its ight went with great
force against t w e large store house and
damaged it to onsiderable extent. The
roof on the mo nting room south of the
railway track was also badly damaged.
The new mount g shop is so badly da-
maged that the hole structure willhave
to be rebuilt.
Walker & Cleg will easily rank 2nd
in amount of los in Wingham. The
gale first loose ed the south-west corn-
er of the roof o their large furniture
