Just a Hint.
Mayor Stewart, at an insurance men's
banquet in Saginaw, told an insurance
tory.
s "A septuagenarian," he began, "said
one evening at dinner to his fair young
wife:
"'My darling, I have just insured my
life in your favor for $100,000.'
" `Oh,you duck!' the beautiful girl
cried, and rising and passing round the
table, she kissed her husband lightly on
his bald head.
" 'Darling,' he said, taking her slim
white hand, 'is there anything else I
can do for you ?'
•` •Nothiug on earth,' she answered;
and then, with a little silvery laugh, she
added, `Nothing in this world. Nothing
under heaven. ' "—New York Tribune.
Ballade of Smiles and Crouches
[T. A. Daly.]
For all life's ills, says the optimist,
For all the trouble and all the care,
For every ailment that may exist
A cheerful smile is a tonic rare.
But when of trouble we get a share
That's much, we fancy, beyond our due,
To ease our feelings and clear the air
A grouchy grumble is helpful, too.
This wicket world, says the moralist,
Would be so healthy and sweet and
fair
Were smiles the fashion and we'd insist
A cheerful smile is a tonic rare,
But since the Devil himself may wear
The merry visage, and all his crew,
Perhaps as mark of the rude but
square,
A grouchy grumble is helpful, too.
An answer soft, says the theorist,
Turns wroth away; and for strength
to hear
The menaced weight of the lifted fist
A cheerful smile is a tonic rare.
But when belligerent eyeballs glare
And threatening glances pierce you
through,
What blessed comfort it is to swear !
A grouchy grumble is helpful, too.
