EDITORIAL NOTES
Sir George Ress was chess n by the
Liberal members of the Senate to lead
them.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier at Ottawa ori
Wednesday of last week was eangratu-
kated by his assembling followers in
Parliament on being seventy-one years
young. The Old Chief's desk. in his office
la the Commons building. was decorated
with bouquets of red roses, presented
with the birthday congratulations of
the Lib oral party and his hosts of friends
in the capital. At seventy-ore:he is in
as if not better health and spirits than
at any time in his life. He enters the
session in splendid fighting trim, and is
apparently geed for many more years
of aetivepublic service.
The Pnw!nce of Quebec is in a good
financial condition. There is a surplus
of $6 e3,4?S on the financial transactions
of the past year, and a further reduc-
tion of the public debt as well as an
excess of liabilities over assets. Pro-
vincial Treasurer Maeienzie was able
to make these cheerful announcements
in presenting his annual statement to
the Lob ature. For the year ending
June 130, the ordinary recipts were $3,-
44704,109: ordinary expenditure, $7,1e22,-
796; surplus, $1.017,312. From this
amount, however, there was a sum of
$3t33,8.53 extraordinary expenditure to
be deducted. Quebec is enjoying eco-
nomical as well as efficient Government
under the Liberal ministry of Sir Lomer
Gouin.
The curtain went up en the second
session of the Borden Government on
Thursday under ideal conditions, so far
as spectacular display and weather con-
ditions were eanceraed. Half an hour
afterwards, following a brief and com-
paratively noncommittal prologue, the
curtain came down again until Monday,
while the actors en the scene made pre-
liminary preparations and the Govern-
ment gets its property effects into work-
ing order for the actual opening of the
first act. A remarkably enthusiastic
rezei;tion was accorded Sir Wilfred Laur-
ier by his supporters. As "The Chief
ientered the Hcase they pounded their
desks in a thunder of approval and
finally rose and broke into vocal cheer-
ing. For several minutes the demon-
stration was continued, Sir Wilfred
smiling his acknowledgment.

duty. If we are no longer to be allow-
ed to associate paiitics with morality
we may expect to be told that we must
keep our ethics and our sense of duty
free from morality also. What use are
we to make of our politics? Already
there is a demand that the tariff be
taken from palitics. that the navy ques-

appointment to the rune service be
taken out of politics. and so on. And
now the regulation of the liquor tra.e

Better Than The Best
While it is generally admitted that
The Family Herald and Weekly Star
of Montreal, is the best family and
farmer's weekly paper printed, the
Publishers are determined to make it
stili better. They are sparing no ex -
pease to give their subscribers of 1913
bigger value thanver. Their beauti-
ful picture, "Motn`er's Treasures," is ;
j.a delightful subject for the home and
it is safe to say that no one who re-
ceives a copy would part with it for
double the money.
No mistake can be made in sending
one dol.ar for that great weekly paper
for 1910. Every subscriber gets the
'ri ure, "Mother's Treasures," size
28 by 29 inches. free. It is the biggest
" dollars worth offered to -day.

LIVE STOCK 3IARSETS.
Toronto, Nov. 25. -City Cattle Mar-
kets -Receipts were 9 cars, with 185
59 head of cattle, 95 sheep and lambs, and
calves. Trade was a little slow, but not
from lack of would-be buyers. There was,
in fact a very good demand for butcher
cattle and for good light stockers, but
owing to the very lightrun prices held a
little too firm to suit the views of buy-
ers, who wanted a better choice for
their money. Several well-known buy-
ers were on hand who wantedthe
a
but could not find the quality they re-
quired. Orders for stockers for the
Canadian West were also left unfilled
for lack of more cattle offering.
Nearly all the offerings finally changed'
hands, however at good prices.
Sheep and lambssteady at last week's
prices.
Hog are quoted a little lower than
last week's closing price, but as re-
ceipts were fair the market may firm
up again.
