"My GURNEY

my housekeepg l
Dear Edith,
In a general way I have wished you all the
good things I know of, so now I am going to descend
to the practical and give you some sound advice
from the store I have accumulated since I started
housekeeping.
Housekeeping naturally suggests the kitchen
first—its equipment and management, or in other
words, THE RANGE
My range, as you know, is a Gurney -Oxford. I
never enjoyed much of a reputation as a cook in my
younger days, so when I thought of being responsible
for three meals a day my heart sank. I imagined
myself battling all day with a sulky range, trying
to coax it into a good humour, and covered with
mortification because of late or spoiled meals. But
my dear, my Gurney -Oxford seemed to sympathize
with my inexperience. From the day it came it

jumped right in and helped. It has become my
good right hand, and I go my way confident that
my Gurney -Oxford will not disappoint me.
It has the cleverest arrangement for regulating
the drafts, well named the Gurney Economizer. One
small lever put up or down does everything. The
fire will stay in all day, hardly burning any coal at
all—then, presto ! It is burning brightly, ready to
bake or roast. An arrangement of flues keeps the
oven always properly heated, so that the biscuits
or bread come out light and crisp and brown. Yes,
Edith, as Bob says, I have developed into "some
cook," and I often tell Dina he must give at least half
the credit to our Gurney -Oxford.
You will understand my enthusiasm better after
you have had your Gurney -Oxford a month or so.
Sincerely Yours,
MARY HOUSEWIFE.

RULES FOR THE HOSTESS.
' The statutes of Ontario provide that
when meeting on the public highways
drivers of rigs must turn out to the
right. If overtaking another, the driv-
er wishing to pass must turn out to the
! left, and the driver of the slower ve-
1 hiele•must turn to the right, thus allow-
ing room for the faster vehicle to pass.
The same rule applies to motor vehicles
as well as others. The driver of any
vehicle who does not comply with these
rules is liable for any damage that may
occur from such non -observance.
Few, if any, medicines, have met with
the uniform success that has attended
the use of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera
and Diarrhoea Remedy. The remark-
able cures of colic and diarrhoea which
it has effected in almosteveryneighbor-
hood have given it a wide reputation.

Mr. Jacob . E. Herr, 111 Grange St.,
Stratford, Ont., writes:—"Ten years ago
I suffered with a very peculiar disease.
I would go to bed feeling as well as could
be, and after sleeping for five hcurs I
would wake with a severe pain in my
back, then moving into my side and
breast. The pain was so terrible I
could not lie in my bed, and usually had
to sit until morning with a pillow propped
up behind my back. With all my pain
I would go to work, and after working up
to about 10 o'clock the pain would leave
me entirely. The same thing would hap-
pen the next night, and every night for
two years. I tried four different doctors,
but none of them did me any good. I
tried a great many patent medicines, but
all of no avail. I gave up all hopes of
.ever getting well. A friend persuaded me
to try Milburn's Heart and Nerve Pills.
I bought four boxes, and after using the
first one I felt a change for the better,
and after using three boxes I could sleep
all night. The pains were gone, and Is TAKEN tivascburn'seH cured.

BRAN FOR HEALTH.
Severe cases of indigestion have been
cured by the persistent and daily use of
bran. It acts upon the liver and is a
general aid to the digestion. It is in-
expensive and whithin the reach of al-
most every homeJteeper.
One of the most palatable ways to
eat bran is as a gem. The following
is a tried recipe. One half cup or
three-fourths cup of brown sugar, but-
ter or lard the size of an egg, one cup
o1; sour milk or water, one teaspoonful
of baking soda, dissolved in one cup of

Plant Sweet Peas.
Next year plant sweet peas. They
are the poor man's comfort and the
rich man's delight. They grow in any
kind of soil, almost without care or at-
tention except to pick the profusion of
beautiful blossoms that glorify the
vines from July till the frost comes.
The wonder of sweet peas is their
beauty and generosity. No other flow-
er is so democratic as this. No cottage
too humble to be ignored by its opening
buds and no home so splendid but that
i t gains added beauty from yines or
vases filled with these dainty flowers.
They are a delight to every eye and
their fragrance is of such subtle sweet-
ness that it is unmatched anywhere.
So next year dig a trench along the
fence or against a screen or where the
vines can ramble over brush heaps,
scatter a packet of seeds and possess
for yourself the delights that sweet
peas can bring to the house and the
heart.

A Municipal Mystery,
From Canadian Collier's.
In the city of Toronto lives a man—
and there is his like in almost every
Canadian city—who for many years
has held office as a city controller, be-
ing elected regularly each New Year's
Day. Other men, sitting on the same
board, have advanced ambitious plat-
forms for municipal reform or for im-
proving the city in some way or an-
other, and have been for the time de-
feated by the people, probably because
the things they advocated were ahead
of the times. Other men have been
alternately elected and defeated, ac-
cording to the whim of the electorate,
who have always been acknowledged
able and honest. But this other man,
saying nothing, proposing nothing, do-
ing nothing, is as sure of his seat as
thougis it had been sold to him and he
held a ticket. He is not a grafter. He
holds no pernicious doctrines. He
represents no predatory corporation.
He has not a pleasing personality and
cannot make a coherent speech, He
was never known to pursue a consist-
ent line of conduct, and when he makes
a speech the reporters work quickly
lest they lose a chance for what they
call "a fool story," Yet this man csln-
not be defeated. There is his like in
almost every municipal government.
They are not actively bad, tnerely'fool-
ish, 'How they get into office, is a
mystery that might be worth investi-
gation by a student of the psychology
of elections,
