IFor Seventeen Days.
John Wannamaker, now in Prince
3 Albert hospital, lived for 17 days in a
!straw stack on the open prairie with
both feetso badly froze he couldn't walk
and no food nor drink, but oats he pulled
from the stack, and snow around the
hole in which he was sheltered, Wan-
namaker had attempted to walk from
Prince Albert to Crooked River a dis-
tance of llomiles in search of work.
Spending one night in the straw -stack,
he found his feet so badly frozen that
he could not go on in the morning and
though he crawled d out four
or
five days
s
in an attempt to see a passer-by he was
unsuccessful and had to seek the shelter
of the stack to keep from freezing. On
the seventeenth day, Walter Guest a
resident of the district, found the man
unconscious andbroughthim to Tisdale.
He was afterwards earried to Prince
Albert, in a precarious condition.

I believe in teaching men, teaching
thein with voice and pen, that the
hon-
est way's the best to get the kale; but
the elan of active jaw says there ought
to be a law, and he wants to see his
neighbors put in jail. I believe in
showing boys that the purost, sanest
joys are the joys that donot
jy leave
\e
them with a feeling stale; but my
neighbor, Jonas Yawp, blows a whistle
for the cop, and is happy when he sees
the boys in jail. If a man commits a
crime I believe it wasted time when we
ride him through the village on a rail,
better teach him what is right -but old
Jonas takes delight when he sees his
malefactor rushed to jail. I can watch
the rich man float in his gilded palace -
boat, and wish him happy zephyrs on
his sail; but old Jonas sees him go with
a bitter wail of woe, crying loudly:
, "All the rich should be in jail!" We
are trying, one and all, to improve this
muddy ball, and I surely hope our efforts
will not fail; but I don't believe we'll
make noble progress till we shake this
old foolishness of sending men to jail.
Oh, 1 don't believe it well to herd
people in a cell till they're hardened in
their sins -without the pale; let us try
to lead men back when they've jumped
the shining track, for you can't reform
the guy who rots in jail.

The poorest girls in the world are
those not taught to work. There are
thousands of them. Rich parents have
petted them and they have been taught
to despite Iabor and to depend upon
others for a living, and are perfectly
helpless. The most forlorn women be-
long to this class. It is the duty of the
parents to protect their daughters from
this deplorable condition,
