By Telephone.
The G. T. R. intends using the tele-
phone for train despatching all over
the system. This will mean that the
despatching of trains over the entire
4,700 miles of railway will be done by
telephone. Several years ago the
Grand Trunk installed the telephone
system on several districts, but it was
only during the past six months that
it has been extended. It costs abotzt
$105 a mile to install the plant.
Wind Did It.
One day last week, Dr. McFadyen,
veterinary of Fergus, had an unique
and uncomfortable experience. He
was going in from Guelph and about
2s miles fcohn town when the storm
overtook him. He had the top of his
buggy up to protect him from rain
and the wind overturned both horse
and rig into the ditch. The rig was
badly damaged and Dr. McFadyen
had the small bond o£ one foot
broken.
LETTER WRITING.
Have you any unkind thoughts?
Do not write them down.
Write no word that giveth pain ;
Written words may long remain. •
Have you heard some idle tale ?
Do not write it down ;
Gossips may repeat it o'er,
Adding to its bitter store.
Have you any careless jest?
Bury it and let it rest—
It may wound some loving breast,
Words of love and tenderness,
Words of truth and kindliness,
Words of comfort for the sad,
Words of counsel for the bad—
Wisely write them down.
Words though small are mighty
things
Pause before you write them,
Little words may grow and bloom
With bitter breath or sweet perfume,
Pray before ybu write them.' _-,'i ii

IMPROVEMENT IN
HORSE BREEDING
Nearly all the states in the north-
west have taken a positive stand on
the proposition or aiding in the im-
provement of horseflesh, We refer to
the fact that these states have enacted
rigid stallion registration laws, laws
that, if enforced, will show to every
stallion patron the status of the sire
in quoatiou both as to breeding and
to health and constitution. It remains
With, the mare owner whether he will
make the most of his opportunities and
work toward constant improvement of
his horse stock. Dr, Alexander of the
Wisconsin station gives the following
sound advice to mare owners:
Commence grading up the farm
horse stock by mating carefully se-
lected, sound, suitable mares with
sound, prepotent, muscular, pure bred
registered stallions.
Continue year after year to use the
best obtainable pure bred stallions of
The Ciydesdale breed of draft
horse in populate Jo Canada; where
1t was introduced in 1840. The re-
sult is that Canada has but • one
type of drafter, and it is a. good
one. The same is true of Scotland,
where the Clydesdale predominates.
Tho Clydesdale stallion shown
above is of prise winning quality.
he character and breed first chosen
• nd never outcross to any other breed.
I)o 310t use any stallion that is un-
sound, unsuitable, partially impotent,
unlicensed or not registered in a stud
book recognized by the department of
agriculture, Washington.
Do not breed from any mare that is
deformed, sick, diseased, vicious, un-
sound, unsuitable, a poor milker or a
cross another.
Breed horses with the objeet of stead-
ily improving, the stock on the farm
and advancing the horse breeding in-
dustry of the state.
Do not retain for breeding purposes
any colt that is not pure bred and eligi-
ble to registry In a stud book recog-
nized by the department of agricul-
ture,
b icul-
ture,
Encourage the working of pure bred
stallions sufficient to keep them
healthy, muscular, prepotent and pre-
vent pampering, weakness, partial im-
potence and actual sterility and so
tend to insure vigor, strong constitu-
tion and health In their offspring at
birth and throughout life.
Encourage the home production of
pure bred stallions to take the place
of the host of undesirable grade, mon-
grel or scrub stallions at present re-
tarding progress in horse breeding.
Black Teeth In Hogs.
Hogs often have black teeth, but the
condition does not indicate any par-
ticular disease. As a rule, no ulcera-
tion is found around the bases of such
teeth, but where that condition exists
the teeth should be extracted. It usu-
ally happens that the teeth are not
discovered until the pigs become sick
from indigestion or some other com-
plaint. and then an examination of the
mouth is made. The teeth are blamed
ror the sickness when that cannot be
otherh•ise diagnosed. In "bullnose” or
"snuffles” the incisor teeth often can-
not properly be used. This is hidden -
'al, a result of the disease and not Its
ektt1Se.
Alfalfa For Swine.
Tito stomach of swine is small, com-
,.ard with those of other animals, and
is not therefore adapted to consuming
large quantities of coarse. bulky foods.
But it is found that alfalfa hay is rel.
islietl by swine, and one-half pound
4 day in addition to a pound of sugar
+vets and a ration of groin nay be fed
ei;h profit. In and regions, where al -
?alfa and satgar beets are extensively
rown, this ration is popular.•
•
Daily Wisdom.
The true value of the dairy
cow is by necessity fixed by the
amount of fat there is itt her
milk and what it costs to pro -
deco it,
The largest milkers are the
•'
greatest eaters. This rule isone
that you can tie to and follow
without danger of being de-
ceived.
The first step in the process of
better breeding is to secure and
use a sire that inherits from
proved ttheestors the prepatent
power to impress dairy qualities
. on his offspring.
Breeding heifers too young
often results In n dwarf breed.
Milk the coals clean every time
if yon would keep up a uniform
flow of milk.
The pereentaae of fat in the
milk of a cote is evidently fixed
by two things—viz, breed and
indh•idmmtity,
With the year around (lir in
s
good stables are necessary,
where the cows enn be fed and
milked in ti comfortable place.

Result Of Dissipation.
The Surgeon General of the U. S.

one-fourth of those serving in the
American Army were admitted to
hospitals for these two causes. The
hospital admissions for alcoholism
alone averaged 25 for each thousand
men, and admissions on account of
diseases of vice have risen to 200 in
the thousand.
