To realize the importance of fru-
gality is to acquire the habit of saving
—and of depositing your savings in
a Bank.
You need not feel embarrassment
in depositing as small a sum as one
dollar in the Bank of Hamilton,
Such a step will mean for you the
commencement of a new era of ease

October Fire Losses.
The October fire loss of Canada and
the United States was exceedingly
high, being $37,188,300.. The ten
months' loss was $100,533,050, That
is over twenty-eight millions more
than in the same months of 1000, but
$12,000,000 less than in the same ten
months of 1008,
Wi11,Extend Railway.
The Ontario Government has sledd-
ed to extend the T. & N. O. from a
point on the main line to Porcupine.
Thiswill open up for colonization a
valuable territory which is rich in
minerals and thousands of acres of the
best agricultural land of the Province.
Another evidence of a progressive ad-
ministration. -
An Orchard Syndicate.
The Advance notes that there is a
new movement on in connection with.
Ontario orchard industry. An English
syndicate is endeavoring to lease a
lot of orchards, in various parts of
the Province, for a term of years.
The syndicate finds out what the
average returns of orchards have
been for a period of years past and
offers a rental of an advance of ten
per cent, on this, The intention is, if
the scheme goes through, to employ
regular gangs ofmen for orchard
work, the winter being spent in get-
ting barrels, etc., in shape, in pruning
and the .summer in spraying, culti-
vating and harvesting. The best.
thing farmers can do is to put their
orchards in first-class shape and steer
clear of syndicates.
Increasing Production;
In Brant county, farmers have been
endeavoring to make their orchards
produce more, and their efforts have
been successful. Here are a few
examples :-F. M. Lewis, from a well
cared for five -acre orchard, has
realized $1,300 in the last two years,
less cost of harvesting. Up to two
years ago, the best returns obtained
by T. Henderson of the Paris section,
from a three acre orchard, amounted
to $100. Last year his returns from
this same orchard amounted to $500.
This year's crop realized $900. The
increase is wholly due to cultivation,
manuring and spraying. The trees
are mostly Spies and Baldwins. A
more striking case ie, that of James
Scroggie in the same district. Mr.
Scroggie has eight acres? but he never
sold more than $40 worth of fruit
until this season. This year he sold for
$055 on the trees, his only expense in
harvesting being in providing dinners
for the pickers. C. W. Gurney has
twelve acres, mostly Spies, Baldwins
and Greeuings. The orchard is 30
years old, His average annual returns
for the last five years have been
$1,500 clear.
Goderich Court Items.
The young man Kurchinsky,-of Col-
borne, charged with stealing the
clothes of a young woman while, she
and her companion were bathing in
the Maitland river in Juno last, was
before His Honor Judge Doyle on
Wednesday of last week, Crown At-
torney Seager prosecuting. After a
good part of the evidence had been
heard, the defendant withdrew his
plea of "not guilty" and owned up to
the offence, which appears to have
been the outcome of a foolish prank
from which he could not easily extri-
cate himself afterwards. He was al-
lowed to go on suspended sentence,
and will no doubt profit by the lesson.
In the case of The King vs. Rowe-
oliffe, charged with complicity in the
wholesale stealing which went on in
Usborne last winter, the accusedwill
appear before the County Judge for
election. The December Sessions of
the Peace will open in Goderich on
Tuesday, Dec. 13, and the most pro-
minent case in the docket will be the
charge against Druggist Armstrong of
Lucknow arising out of the poisoning
of a young woman in June last,
through a mistake in the drug dis-
pensed.— [Goderieh.
is-pensed.—[Goderich Star.

ings, implements and live stock.
WOMEN SUFFER
MORE THAN MEN.
Women have more than their share
of the aches and pains that afflict hu-
manity. They must "keep up" in
spite of constantly aching backs, or
headaches, dizzy spells, etc. Mrs..Ed-
ward Calwood, 123 Harold St„ Port
William, Ont., says :—
"I suffered with dull, miserable
pains, soreness across my back and in
my sides for months. They would
catch me so badly at times that I
could scarcely move around. I would
have dizzy spells and altogether felt
generally run-down. After using a
number of remedies without finding
relief, I learned of Booth's Kidney
Pills and found them an excellent
remedy. They not only relieved me
of the miserable pains and soreness in
my back, but cured me of my kidney
trouble."

Women In Legislature.
Four women were elected to the
Colorado Legislature in the recent
U. S. elections. It will be interesting
to see what effect their presence
among the politicians will have. In-
vestigations so far seem to show that
the placing of a women on a political
equality with men has not resulted in
either the benefits or the evils predict-
ed. Women have a good deal of the
same human nature that is common
to men, only sometimes they show it
differently,
Will Your Family Be Properly
Clothed and Educated When
You Are gone ?
How To Figure It Out
1. Your total annual family ex-
pense is, say .................$1,000
2. I)edaoc your personal share
of same, say .. , ...
8. 13alanoe—being annual income
needed to support your family 700
4. Estate required to yield need-
ed inconie at 5 per cent. (20
times No, 3) 14000
5. Deduct net cash value of your
estate to•day,say, 5,000
6. Balance -estate not yet created 0,000
7, Deduct amount now covered
by life insurance , , , 3,000
8, Additional ' life iusurance
needed 6,000
Examine the above figures and see
how they flt your position. Tho
question is not "Are you insured 2"
but, "Are you suffluiently insured ? "
You say, "I will carry my own risk,"
You can't do it, It is your wife and
family who are carrying it. Begin
the new year right by properly pro-
tecting them.
