Winghamites from Australia
hated to leave local town
Three people came from
halfway around the world to help
Wingham celebrate its 100th
birthday as a town and by the
time they left, they said it almost
felt like home.
The three visitors were from
Wingham, New South Wales,
Australia. William Walker,
mayor of the town of 4,000, was
here with his wife Helen and his
father John.
They got the invitation to come
to Wingham's centenary several
months ago when the mayor
talked via short wave radio with
local mayor William Walden.
Their first impressions of the
town and the surrounding
countryside was that it is "ob-
viously a prosperous area".
The Canadian and Australian
towns have much in common, as
both are about the same size and
age (the Australian town
celebrates its centenary in 10
years) and are situated on a
river.
Agriculture is a big industry in
both areas, though away from the
valley of the Manning River,
farmland near Wingham,
Australia, is less fertile and beef
farming rather than dairying is
carried out. One farm within 20
miles of the town has 90,000
acres, though in the river valley
farms are much smaller. In
Queensland some farms are
tremendous in size, John Walker
said. There are some which
contain 2,000,000 or more acres.
It is a little after the middle of
the summer here and in the
Australian town it is winter. It
never snows there, though there
is frost some nights. Even in the
winter the temperature can get
up to 75 degrees Fahrenheit,
while in summer the mercury
can reach past loo degrees
Fahrenheit.
The Australian mayor, a
lawyer, found the people here
quite friendly and curious about
his country and his town.
The Walkers knew something
of Canada as they have friends
who have visited this country on
holidays and went home with
nothing but praise for Canada
and Canadians. None of the
friends had visited Wingham,
Ontario, so the Walkers were
eager to find out more about the
town than they had been told
earlier.
When centennial celebrations
kicked off in Wingham Jan. 1, Bill
Rintoul, centennial committee
chairman and Mr. Walden sent
letters to Mr. Walker informink
him about the centenary and
gave some details about what the
town is like.
To get a different perspective
of the town the mayors of the two
Winghams and Mayor Jack
Stoner of Standish, Michigan,
went for an airplane ride over
town Sunday afternoon and then
got pilot Bill Cruikshank to give
them a ride to see the Bruce
Nuclear Power Development.
The Walkers arrived in town
about 11:30 Friday morning and
had to leave for Toronto at 7 p.m.
Sunday. In that time they saw a
lot of the town on a tour con-
ducted by the local mayor and
said they were impressed not
only with the town but the , pirit
of its people and the energetic
approach to celebrating the
centenary.
Plans haven't started for
Wingham, Australia's, centenary
because it is still a decade off.
There aren't other towns in the
area to get celebration ideas
from, as all the towns there are
young, relative to local towns.
"We don't know of any (towns
near Wingham, Australia) which
h as reached this stage," the
Australian mayor said of this
town's 100 years as a town.
He was sure Canadian
Winghamites will receive in-
vitations to attend the Australian
town's centenary in 1989.
