(Bob) Currie purchased an established furniture business In the year 1913 from Sam Gracey, who had been a fixture on the main street of Wingham for many years. The business was located on the present site of Burke Electric at that time. Two years later, Mr. Currie moved his establishment to the Wilson Block, where it has operated since that time. The purchase of that block was completed in 1944 and a second store space in the building was converted to a funeral parlor. It was in the year 1898, eighty-one years ago, that James Walker estab- lished the family name in Wingham's business community. As an under- taker and furniture dealer he was joined by his son, A. J. (Alva) Walker who retired in 1948 when the business was sold to S. J. Walker, a descendant of the founder's brother, Isaac Walker. The new owner, Jack Walker, continued the furniture business, known as Walker's Home Furnishings at the Josephine Street location and in 1949 purchased a spacious home on the corner of Patrick and Edward Streets as a funeral home and residence. In 1973 the furniture business was sold and early this year the under- taking business and funeral home were purchased by Doug Layton and Doug McBurney, who had purchased the Currie funeral service a few months previously. This new firm is the successor to two firms which have provided a total of 147 years of understanding service to the community. Currie -Walker Funeral Home A Division of Layton -McBurney Limited Mr. Currie's elder son, R. John Currie, entered the business in 1938 and since his return from overseas service in 1946 was associated with his father and later as the business owner until sale of the firm to Doug Layton and Doug McBurney, both employees of the Currie firm. The furniture display rooms now occupy two spacious store sites on Josephine Street. The business is now operated as: Currie Furniture A Division of Layton -McBurney Limited lr,- P k . f 1Z Wns 1
