Shown are Harold and Isabel White and Lorne and Margaret Humphrey. some of the topics presented during the past year, including ceramics, films on rape and protection and a talk about the work of the Children's Aid Society. The members are anticipating a very interesting year in 1979. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month in Howick Central School and anyone is welcome to join the group. Lunch was served by Marian Feldskov, Joyce Lockie and Mrs. Smith. How long has it been since you've hada Both businesses are relative newcomers to Wingham, they are located side by side and are owned by the same people, but Pepi's Pizza and Belle's Variety and Gifts serve a different mayket and have different operational problems. Belle's opened about two and a half years ago at 180 Josephine St. and was joined in September 1877 by Pepi's next door at 176 Josephine St. Owners of the businesses are Lorne and Margaret Humphrey and Harold and Isabel White. Six girls work in the two locations with Mary Weber working full-time in Belle's and Darlene Rich, Mary Ann Welwood, Karlene Nevery, Marilyn MacIntyre and Debbie MacConnell working part-time. When the Humphreys and Whites were planning the variety store they asked variety store owners what to expect and how much stock to keep in supply. The advice they got was to have a wide range of items in stock and to make sure there is enough of each item so customers won't go away disappointed. "If you don't have it (an item) and they come in three or four times, it doesn't take long for people to quit coming to a variety store," Mr. White said recently. Belle's specializes in bread and milk and other everyday needs, party goods, greeting cards, giftware for showers and birthdays and also sells magazines and scores of other items. The pizza at Pepi's is the biggest seller though submarine sandwiches make up a large part of the sales. Ice cream cones were popular in Pepi's last summer, but may be sold next summer in Belle's. Both stores are in a good location for the type of business, Mr. White said. The pizza shop gets pretty busy as soon as hockey games end at the Wingham Areca which is a block away. Belle's and Pepi's usually cater to people who just pop into the stores, get what they came for and then leave. There is usually plenty of parking for this stop and go type traffic, he said. Because they are located at the corner of Josephine and Victoria streets the two shops didn't suffer much from main street recon- struction last summer. Some businesses located in the middle of blocks didn't fare so well. One of the differences between Belle's and Pepi's is the size of the inventory and the cost of that inventory. The many products at Belle's made it an expensive business to start and an expensive one to keep going. Inventory control is important at Belle's Mr. White said, while it isn't as crucial at Pepi's because there are fewer products to stock and fewer suppliers to deal with. The trend toward higher consumption of fast foods shows no sign of letting up and that is good news for Pepi's Pizza. Wingham .. .
