A few weeks ago, as we attended a mixed gathering of farm and townspeople we overheard a conversation among some of the farmers. They were talking with considerable concern about the increasing numbers of their fellows who are being treated for heart problems, stomach disorders and high blood pressure. Now doesn't that sound familiar? Those ailments have been the price of success among businessmen in towns and cities for several decades. The fact that farmers are beginning to experience these same discom- forts is, perhaps, proof that farming has become big business with capital B's. During a "heated debate on local problems a couple of months ago we heard one of the rural residents say, "What you don't seem to realize is that lots of farmers in this neighborhood could buy out the average businessman three times over." How true! The days of the poor peasant plodding along behind his horse-drawn plow are long gone — and we who live close to the land would do well to waken up to that truth. Our provincial and federal governments some- times act as though no changes had taken p ce in the production of food. We still hear an read that outworn adjective, the "family" farm. There is nothing wrong with the word in itself, but it has become a politician's way of saying that he will never defend the concept of the tired old father passing on his meagre hundred acres to his penniless, but eager son, who will do his best, with the help of government, to maintain the land's fertility until he, too, has been worked to early senility. It is no longer the family farm; it is the family enterprise. Father can sell the place for a couple of thousand dollars an acre if he chooses. His present investment in equip- ment and buildings stands him anywhere up to a quarter of a million and one year's operating costs would have bought half the township in his grandpa's da,- Nor does all this big spending mean that today's farmer is rolling in wealth. It simply means that he has entered the "big leagues" as far as economics are concerned. No wonder Farmer Brown has ulcers, a threat of coronary arrest and doesn't sleep very well. He has contracted the business- man's ailments along with the business- man's worries. Welcome to the club! All Back to the castle Life must have been pretty rugged back in the days when the well turned -out gentle- man tivore a tin suit and his lady rode her palfrey side-saddle. The world was a rough place. The fellow who wasn't handy with a sword didn't last long. Not only did he have to fend off his neighbor who lived in the castle over on the other side of the hill, but every time he and his family ventured out across the drawbridge they had to face thieves and footpads along the way. The world was a violent place in those times. As centuries went by men and women and their children gradually forged a society in which personal safety was not a problem. Their personal body -guards and retainers were replaced by police forces; the walls around their castles gave way to green lawns and the battlements became picture windows. The world became safe, even for the _weakest and most defenceless. Two weeks ago a friend of ours who lives in ,:Guelph was a little perturbed when he found that the Italian lady who comes to their home to help with the cleaning had failed to arrive by noon. Inquiry, disclosed that she and her twelve, -year-old daughter had left their home early in the morning, but found a little later that they had to. return. When they unlocked the door a couple of thugs were robbing the place. The robbers then proceeded to beat both mother and daughter so badly they wound up in the hospital. They have discovered something they can scarcely believe. Prince Bernhardt, the consort of Queen Juliana, demanded and received over a million dollars from the Lockheed Aircraft people as the price of his recommendation that the Netherlands government purchase the American made planes. The prince has resigned his post as inspector -general of'the Dutch armed forces and the people of that nation fear that the very•continuance of the monarchy may be in grave danger. So much for the prince. He has betrayed a trust so deep that he apparently believed he could get away with a slippery deal undetected. But there seems to be little or no criticism of the American business mon- archs who co-operated in the bribery. Is it, then, permissible for big business to pay the graft, but totally wrong for the prince to ask and accept it?
