During the past few weeks The Advance -
Times has carried many letters on the
subject of young people and how they spend
their leisure hours. The correspondence was
sparked by a discussion at the July meeting
of the town council concerning the nuisance
created by littering and loitering in the
neighborhood, of the town hall.
Most of the letters were from young
people who were obviously angered by their
belief that council was tarring all youth with
the same brush. One or two letters from
adults pointed out quite truthfully that the
inclination of today's kids to gather at a
downtown meeting place is nothing new—it
has been the same in previous generations.
A few of the letters from young people
contained inaccuracies which sfjould.be cor-
rected: For example,. there was a reference
to the funds raised by previous youth groups.
It is simply not true that the money referred
to was taken by town Gouncil. It is probably
still in an inactive bank account. Secondly,
one of the letters stated that council had
closed a local pool hall. Again, totally un
true. Town council had -nothing whatever to
do with that business ceasing operations. It
was a decision of the proprietor.
The . repeated statement that the tow►`
has done nothing to provide for the new"
young people completely overlook
that the taxp,;yers of this co

New year looks go C1
for Junior r%letlee.,
I' \i'n'' .epi her ,.,i , •
Ou.r one year anniversary is d big event to us. It has proven that a
group which was considered unsuccessful has been proved otherwise.
We have taken ion many projects.
We had a Carwash on September 6, Dance on September 19, Dance-a-
thon October 20, Hockey 'Game November 1, a Hallowe'en clean up,
Babysittinl December 15 - 23, Carol Singing and we had $1000.00 in our
account. Since then we've had a dance with Wayne Poole, Free snow
removal (with donations), Shirt sales, Gosling car wash, Main Street
cleon-up, dance with Greenlight and Creed, helped the Kinettes with a
garage sale, a Dance with Robin Brent, a Dance with Mr. Production
(July 27th).
We will have another car wash, help with Frolic Days food booths and
drinking machine, and our most important undertaking, this year's
Santa Claus Parade. We have given donations to the arena fund and
tennis courts and helped sell tickets for the Olympic draw.
This August we are having our first annual camp -out for the active
members on August 28th at Adrian Keet's farm.
We have had good times and bad times but have worked our hardest
and now have over $2.000. in the bank account.
We wish to thank everyone for their support, young and old, and hope
they will still help us. Our meetings are still Mondays at 7:30 and anyone
who would like to,attend please do so. We need everyone's support as
we begin our second year.
QUESTION: How do you think the Junior Citi-
zens have done this year?
(Mostly by members of the J.C.'s)
- I think we did good for our first year. I en-
joyed it. Thanks for the help everyone gave
me. Sue Burke (former President)
(Thanks to Sue Burke for an outstanding
job from the Wingham Junior Citizens).
-1 think we did great considering we started
with nothing and I think the Main Street
looks 100% better since we cleaned it.
I; Sandy Breniil (Vice P.)
I think we did great but next year's going
to be better (I hope). Brenda Foxton, Treas.
-They're showing great promise and have a
lot of potential which hasn't been tapped
yet. Jim Ward
I think the J.C.'s did really good this year,
we made a lot of money. Jill Hayden
I think we've accomplished a lot and also
had a lot of luck. Marlene Hastings
We did a lot considering how many people
sh6w up! Angela Lockridge
