How to look your best
on a limited budget
By Lavonne Ballagh
Being under the modified big
top might sound to you like you're
going to a circus! Wearing the
new spring clothes; can be as
much fun as a circus if you latch
onto something that makes you
look good and feel like a million
dollars. The modified big top
could be the most comfortable
thing to wear since the chemise of
years gone by --and will do just as
much for your figure!
The 1976 chemise is loose and
full, perhaps not as full as a pants
partner but still with lots of
material, It may fall from a ga-
thered yoke which will do won-
ders for you if you're muchly-en-
dowed on top! Even some of the
jackets this year have that
gathered yoke but be careful, it
isn't for everyone. It will add
width to shoulders and could
make a small person look top-
heavy!
Your Modified big dress will
undoubtedly be made from a
fabric that drapes nicely and
flows with your every movement.
It will probably have a V -neckline
and may have long sleeves that
are full and nipped into an elastic
wristline or a neat buttoned cuff.
If you don't want to look like a
walking tent, sash it neatly with
an obi sash of the same material
or invest in one of the little
narrow belts that will nip it in
nicely.
The two-piece look will also
feature the big top, to be either
worn alone or over a little turtle-
neck. It too, will either flow loose-

ly or can be belted to give a more
dressy look. If you're the type of
gal who lives an entire day in one
dress, they're the kind of thing to
own. A loose little top over a
sweater will provide a business -
girl look for the office, then five
minutes before you leave,, you
can popbinto the washroom,
remove the sweater, add a co-
ordinating scarf or matching
sash around the waistline, a
versatile chain necklace or scarf
at the neckline and voila—a
whole smashing new you!
The beauty of the two-piece
dress is that you can create sev-
eral outfits from one dress. Two
pieces that harmonize with each
other, yet can also provide lots of
pow on their own, can be a versa-
tile, yet inexpensive. part of your
wardrobe. Choose colors or pat-
terns that will match other things
you already own and you will
save money and get extra mile-
age out of last year's fashions.
There has probably never been
a spring when the skirt was more
in than 1976. It will be full or
gathered, flared or gored, but it
will be a necessity. Paired with a
dressy little blouse and neutral
colored vest, you can't get any-
thing more tailored -looking for
work. Add a cute little long top
and belt it with a narrow little
belt, and that ensemble will take
you into the evening hours. The
layered look lets you experiment
with T-shirts, shells, sweaters
and tops to give one skirt one
dozen different uses and looks.
They can be of soft flowing
material, polyester knits or the
ever -popular denims, and they
will be belted, sashed or scarved,
whatever your whim of the mom-
ent happens to be.
Laced, tucked, bibbed,
wrapped, sashed— whatever
your own look is in a dress, it will
be 'nice and easy'. The days of
the tight restricting dress are
over; today's busy-ness calls for
freedom and today's fashion tries
to fill the bill..
After all the prim and proper
styles we've been into, no one is
expecting you to make the move
I, I / to the fashion big top without a
little apprehension. Your first
reaction may very well be "Yck I
!I How Terrible! ". Make the
change gradually and you may
find that the free clothes of 76
really turn you on and what they
( ) lack in stylish beauty, they may
Cr more than compensate for in
comfort and durability.
