Fergus.' advance to group finals Before a large crowd at the local arena on Sunday evening, the Ironmen sent the Fergus Green MaclItne to the sidelines until next pk as they downed Fergus 8'6to 3 to take the best of seven four games to one and ad- vance to the group finals. The first period featured good,, fast hockey with good goal tend- ing at both ends, the only goal of the period a power play goal at 2:34 as Gerry Wheeler, standing at the goal mouth, swirled a Greg Hamilton .rebound into the net. Early in the second, a couple of power play goals, the'first by Ian Montgomery at 5:33 and the second by Greg Hamilton at 6:45 sent the Ironmen ahead 3 to 0. Early in the third, Fergus' Mr. Aggravation, Scott Marshall, picked up a major misconduct and headed for an early shower. The Fergus team settled down to play hockey and with two quick goals, it was a 5 to 3 game and Fergus was. right back in the game. They kept pressing and only some big key saves by Iron - men goalie Benny kept them at bay. At 13:41, Brian Vahbee picked up a power goal as Fergus' Randy Gerrie sat in the penalty box: Then a goal by Steve Caslick' 6 i at 15:44 and another by Murray Bl'aaok at 18:52 and it was an 8 to 3 win for the Ironmen and the end of the season for the Fergus Green Machine. WHISTLE STOPS: This was certainly & different game than the last, visit of the Green Machine ' to town'. Both teams played well with good exciting hockey, The three stars were Gerry Wheeler, Ian Montgomery and Benny Blackwell. Gerry Wheeler led the Ironmen with a pairof goals and was back in his best wheeling form. Ian Mont- gomery had a goal and an assist and played a good solid game on defence carrying the puck out of his own end with authority. Benny Blackwell came up with cPvPral bio saves early in the game to keep the locals ahead, Coach George Skinn reached into the reserves and Gord Kinahan up from the Midgets certainly didn't look out of place. In fact, Coach George put to- gether a pair of rookies, Gord Kinahan and Craig Lindsay as a penalty killing duo and they did a"' yeoman's job of breakir* up thg Fergus power play. the Ironmen now advance t! the group finals and play the win- oers of the Arthur and Wiarton series.
