Martin Ontario Veterinary Association HOU(SE'IRAINING YOUR PUPPY Unlike kittens who seem to instinctively start using a lit- ter tray from the first day they arrive in you# home, puppies often provide a frus- trating few weeks for their new "parents". In most cases, the puppy is bright, anxious to please and will learn quickly what is expect- ed of him. How quickly the housetraining process takes, depends largely on you and your lifestyle. If the entire family is away all day, train- ing will be slow and difficult. Perhaps you should postpone acquiring a new puppy until you can give it the proper time needed for training and attention. You should remember that a puppy's ability to control his bowels is often not fully developed until 10 weeks of age. However, training should start as soon as he ar- rives. The principals of training are based on the fact that as early as five weeks of age, puppies avoid soiling their own sleeping area and that urinating - defecating is a conditioned reflex. Keep your puppy confined to a small area with its food and water placed as close as possible to the house exit. Secondly, after every feed- ing, play or sleep periods, as well as first thing in the morning and last at night, take your, puppy directly out- side to the same spot each time. These periods in the day are the times that normal alimentary reflex occurs. When. you ,pick an area outside, be sure it has something visually striking about it, (e.g. tree stump or boulder), so that your puppy will remember it and come to associate with it. Any time the puppy soils in this loca- tion, make a great fuss over him. With time, your puppy will come to associate all of this praise with using this area' as a washroom and he will tend to go there more often. The process is similar to potty training for children, only puppies seem to learn much more quickly! If your puppy soils in the house, do not go out of your way to scold him because this will draw attention toan action you want him to stop; Do not let him see you clean up the mess for this same reason. Give him extra praise the next time he goes outside to the usual location. This procedure works very well with most puppies. Have patience with him and be consistent with your praise when he uses the cor- rect washroom area. A few other hints may help if you are still having problems: 1. Have your puppy checked for worms since they prolong poor bowel con- trol and are common to pup- pies. 2. Feed your puppy a balanced canned food de- signed for growing dogs. This type of food is highly digestible and results in little waste matter. The fewer times a puppy needs to defe- cate, the easier training will be. 3. Acquire your puppy dur- ing the more pleasant time of the year when neither he nor you will object to going out- side due to cold or wet weather. 4. If possible. try to train your puppy directly to thy outdoors without training him to use papers first. Using papers will be easier on your floors but present an extra step of retraining from the papers to the outdoors at a later date. Good luck to you and your pet! 0- 0 0 This advice has been brought to you by the Ontario Veterinary Association.
