The Wingham Advance-Times, 1983-06-29, Page 20Page 6—Crossroads—June 29, 1983 The Wonderful Grand Band moves west You don't have to be a full- fledged Newfie to roll on /he broadloom of your own living room at the outrageous antics of The Wonderful Grand Band, starting Fri- day, July 8 at 8 p.m. on CBC Television. Since 1979, The Wonderful Grand Band has played award-winning shows to full houses all over Newfound- land and the rest of Canada. Because of its popularity, both locally and across the country in the many centres which picked it up, the CBC has taped a new series of nine half-hour shows for net- work airing. The Wonderful Grand Band is an exhilarating com- pilation of musical styles and original comedy material. The dynamic combination ends up being the kind of mixture the Band refers to as " hi drama ... lo art". Themusic is original, from traditional rock to punk to "beyond rock", while the comedy is simply off the wall, running the gamut from the outrageously familiar to the wildly ab- surd. The various characters hold a mirror to and reflect life on the local, national and international scenes. Some of the Band's imper- sonations include Carol Channing, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, and Lauren Bacall, with the latter in a sketch for Breaking Point, a caffeine -enriched coffee. A talk show host interviews Pick, of Pick and the Pock- marks, asking the semi- literate, drug -crazed punker whether he reads a lot. Other guests on the "Monte Crisco Show" are pop star Randy Glib and singer Lillian Shrillwell, "winner of three Gimme Awards A Gabby, and an Actless nominee who has wanted to sing with more big stars than anyone else I can mention". The Band lets no target escape unscathed. Instead of beer commer- cials, their spots advertise just plain "booze" — any kind, anywhere. Another sketch satirizes the punk scene in a song featuring four vicious punk grannies who want to know "What have we to look forward to?" The Wonderful Grand Band w . c :. ted in October of 1 ' by som of Newfound - Ian 's best performers, musicians an. comedians. They colla • . ated on an adventurous eries for New- foundland called The Root Seller. The album re- corded as a result was a run- away success. Although they went their separate ways after the show, the demand for more of The Wonderful Grand Band kept bringing them back together. The current Band now includes four of the six original mem- bers of Codco, the hilarious comedy team formed in the '70s. The Band's two record- ings, Wonderful Grand Band, 1978, and Living In A Fog, 1981, have received ac- claim not only in Canada, but in the States, Great Britain, Europe and Japan. The group will spend the month of July in the Maritimes and will tour Canada in the fall. The members of The Won- derful Grand Band are Ron Hynes, Jamie Snider, Paul "Boomer" Stamp, Sandy Morris, Howie Warden, Steve Annan, featuring comedians Greg Malone, Tommy Sexton, Mary Walsh and Cathy Jones. The show is written by Greg Malone and Tommy Sexton. Original compositions and arrange- ments are by The Wonderful Grand Band and Declan O'Doherty. The show is pro- duced and directed by Jack Kellum.
