These plays are vastly different in their immedi- ate effect and in terms of the game plan they repre- sent. Choosing the right one is basically a matter of choosing the right strategy. Play A, dumping the blot behind O's anchor, repre- sents a safe, conservative approach designed to avoid complications and future contact (hitting) by either side. The underlying as- sumptions are that (1) X is far enough ahead.., in the race that he will win easily unless hit, and (2) X has a very good chance of not being hit. Play B pursues a more complicated strategy of building a stronger block- ade against O's anchor on the 3 -point. X leaves a blot on the 13 -point which can be bit next turn with 6-4 or any 1. X is counting on two fac- tors to compensate for the danger of being bit his im• - mediate return shot at O's blot on the 24 -point, and the difficult time 0 should have leaping over X's five - point prime. X figures that even if he doesn't come in right away, in fact even if he is closed out, 0 may have to break up his home board before all of O's back men escape. Both game plans are valid strategies given the right conditions, but only one can work best here. This time, the best ap- proach is the safe and sim- ple Play A. X's lead is such that he should win a running game at least two thirds of the time. And he is unlikely to be hit, in part because O's position is about to become much weaker. Next turn, 0 must either abandon the 12 -point, break the 3 -point (which could be suicidal), or start breaking up his home board. Each of these possi- bilities lessen the danger of being bit. Play B achieves roughly the same results as Play A when 0 doesn't hit next turn. When 0 does bit, things can become quite complicated for X. My results in rolling out this position suggest that X wins only half the time when hit. M5(iiy of these losses are extra ones that X would not incur with Play A. Play A is better because it reflects a strategy based on X's strengths. X's strong points are his racing lead and a position which makes it fairly easy to avoid leaving shots. Play B employs a block- ing strategy which is risky while providing few imme- diate benefits. Points are numbered 1 to 24, starting with X's home board at the lower left.
