HOLLYWOOD - Enjoy- ing a feminine prerogative, Lamb Chop lies about her age. Or, to say the least, she fudges about the length of time she's been in show business, something she got into the day she was born. "Lamb Chop claims she's celebrating her 25th anni- versary," Shari Lewis says indulgently, "but she's real- ly 28." Lewis, of course, is the lively companion -mentor of Lamb Chop, a puppet of international reputation who had a fan following be- fore Miss Piggy was even a starlet. While Lewis and Lamb Chop became famous as a team, the human half of the duo doesn't limit her creative activities to pup- petry and ventriloquism. Nor is the puppet partner Shari's only professional colleague Other puppets partici- pate in the Lewis act, in- cluding a pair of life-sized show girls and a larger - than -life replica of Fred Astaire who was cast be- cause Shari considers the real Astaire to be a giant star with whom she's al- ways dreamed of dancing. Despite her success in other areas, she says she still considers herself first and foremost a dancer. "A dancer," she says, "is what I am." However, she's also an author whose 21st book is called "One Minute Bed- time Stories" and is a best seller soon to become a record album. She's a devo- tee of the Girl Scouts in whose interest she works assiduously; and she con- ducts symphony orches- tras. "My mother was a music coordinator for the New York Board of Education," she explains, "and I used to watch her conduct orches- tras made of up young chil- dren_" The experience encour- aged Lewis to try her hand with a baton, which she's done triumphantly before the Rochester Philharmon- ic, the Pittsburgh Sympho- ny and National Symphony at Kennedy Center, the Corpus Christi (Texas) Symphony, among other orchestras. SHARI LEWIS . . . Doesn't limit creative activities to puppetry: As a dancer, she knows that the human body is a precious instrument wor- thy of the best care. So, while confessing that she's often tempted to forego ex- ercise, she and her husband work out with a trainer who comes to their home for two-hour sessions sev- eral times a week. "I begin each day the night before," Lewis claims summing up her at- titude towards physical fit- ness. To accommodate all of her activities, Lewis thinks of the days of her life as fabric "I used to sew," she ex- plains, "and I used to like to see how many pieces of a pattern I could fit on a piece of cloth." Shari's father was offi- cial magician to the New York City Department of Recreation who, when he discovered that his daugh- ter was becoming a self- taught ventriloquist, put her in the bands of a teach- er, a 99 -year-old pro whose classroom was Central Park. While she entered show business as a very young dancer, Shari quickly put her talents to other use, be- cause she couldn't adjust to chorus work. "So one day I went home and JVasked, `Where's the puppet?' "The puppet was under the bed."
