Here, by placing the sofa opposite the small fireplace, a living room area is Decor Score By BARBARA HARTUNG How to stretch space Q. My husband and I re- cently bought a second home to use for short vaca- tions and weekend trips. The house basically has one medium-size main room which I want to serve as living room, dining room and kitchen (with the kitchen along one wall), one bedroom ani one bath- room. Because it is small, I have to make each inch count. Please give as some suggestions an bow to -plan. Just the two of as will be using the hoose — although we will bring home work with us at times. I'd like to keep upkeep at a mini- mam. — R.B. A. It is entirely possible to create a compact yet workable kitchen along one wall — lining up an apart- ment -size stove and refrig- erator with sink and dishwasher, if you desire. Also, don't forget to plan for shelves and/or cabinets for storage. I've seen similar kitch- ens created which have foldable doors that can be pulled across to close off the kitchen when not in service. Undoubtedly you'll want furnishings for seating and perhaps lounging as well as dining. You can make the most of limited floor space by bringing furniture out away from the walls. For example, place a small sofa out in the room and back it with a rectangular dining table. Add two arm- less chairs to the table for use as a work space and mini -office. Use two dining chairs with arms as either occasional chairs to com- bine with your sofa for seating or for use at the table for dining A set of etageres along one wall could house a tele- vision set, stereo and ac- cessories. For windows and floor, make life simple. Use an easy -care vinyl or tile for the floor and wooden louvers or woven blinds at the windows. Q We recently moved into an apartmat and I al- ready have spat my entire budget on a sofa, tables and a chair.. I guess I didn't plan very well benne I still need something at the windows. Please give me an at- tractive, temporary sole - tion for covering my living room windows. — M.C. A. Why don't you buy some sheet material or light cotton remnant at a discount house and iron the fabric onto the window shades? This can give you a very attractive look. Extra fabric could be used on throw pillows for your sofa or large futons for floor sitting. Q.Wehave whathas to be the ugliest the in osrr bathroom — turquoise green and orchid. I can't do anything about the tile around the bathtub 'bat I woald like to elimi- nate one solid wall of the tile. I really can't bring myself to remove ft be- cause I think I would just farther botch throngs up. What can I do? — Y.M. A. Why don't you shirr some interesting fabric on a long curtain rod the length of the wall and created. Backing the sofa with a rectangular table allows for a dining space which can also function as a workspace for office chores. Furnishings are by Chromcraft. cover the wall from floor to ceiling — attaching a rod both at the floor and ceiling level? You can do this easily enough by turn- ing down the fabric and stitching a small hem through which you can in- sert a curtain rod. Repeat the fabric pat- tern at your window, if you have one, and even for a shower curtain, protecting the fabric with a plastic liner. Choose your fabric care- fully to complement the tiler a pretty floral or geo- metric with tiny touches of turquoise and orchid would give a coordinated look. Did You Know By PHYLLIS WEAVER Did you know that in the mid -19th century, a French physicist mathematically describedhow the kitchen sink drains? Gaspard Coriolis was re- ally explaining how the world turns, and it turns in what we now call "Coriolis effect." Simply explained, Coriolis effect is at work when the water drains from the sink: It always drains to the right in the Northern Hemi- sphere. In Australia, sinks drain to the left. But in Ecuador, they drain without spinning at all. If you take off from Seat- tle eattle in a jet bound for New York City, with no wind and no course changes, you will end up in South America. In the military, long-range gunners must account for Coriolis drift by compensat- ing and adjusting their aim. One of the most important consequences of Coriolis ef- fect is our weather patterns. Yf winds were not deflected, we would hav no pressure (high or low gradients) and thus have a climate such as at the equator.
