Page 6 -Crossroads -June 15, 1983 Backgammon By Ward By JEFF WARD Nicholas "Nack" Ballard first learned to play back- gammon in 1977. By 1979, he was already considered one of the world's top two dozen players. Ballard, from San Fran- cisco, has won many major tournaments including the 1980 Holiday, the 1980 Cali- fornia Open and the 1981 Plimpton Cup. A recog- nized expert on many games, Ballard enjoyed a brief but successful career as a commodities broker in Chicago. Recently, he has returned to the Bay Area as a partner in a game store. Ballard's precise check- er play can be illustrated with this example taken from the Chicago Cup tour- nament in November 1981. As X, Ballard is playing a "1 -point game." In a 1 -point game, the player holding the 1 -point (or the 24 -point in this case) hopes to hit a shot while the opponent is bearing off. If the hit comes early enough and the hit man can be trapped, the hitting player gains a big advan- tage. Sometimes the game isn't even played out be- cause the hitting player claims the game by redou- bling. In this position however, X's position is rather weak because his broken home board will not be very ef- fective for trapping pur- poses. An obvious play with part of the 1-1 is 4/3, com- pleting a fifth point and getting rid of the potential- ly dangerous blot. " Mostplayerswould sim- ply complete the roll by moving 9/6. But Ballard had a better idea: 9/8, 6/5(2), switching points. X gives up little with the point switch; the blocking power of the 5 -point is al- most as great as the 6. But he gains valuable time - time in which to maintain all five blocking points. With Ballard's play, sub- sequent rolls totaling 6 or 7 (such as 5-1 or 4-3) can be handled by bringing the outside man in. With the al- ternative play, these rolls force X to break his 6 -point and critically weaken his home board. Although X is still likely to lose, his chance of win ning is decidedly better with Ballard's play. This is one mark of a champion: When things go badly, he or she continues to squeeze the most out of each and every roll. Points are numbered I to 24, starting with X's home board at the lower left. A move, for example, from the 7 -point to the 3 - point is written 7/3. 7/3' means that a man was hit on the 3 -point. 7/3(2) means that two men were moved to the 3 -point. 24 23 22 21 2019 16 17 10 1614 13 1 2 3 4 6 6 7 6 9 10 11 12 X to Play 1-1 Order your WEDDING INVITATIONS from us.
