RIDING THE RAPIDS on a rubber air mattress was one of the cooler ways to spend a
sweltering afternoon Monday as, for the second day in a row, the mercury hovered in
the high 80s with a promise of more hot weather to come. Doug Montgomery, Greg
Moore and Brad Hayden would drag the raft up under the Howson Dam and then ride
the chute of water downstream.
Wengers congratulated
on 40 years in business
More than 60 staff of Wenger Publications,
family members and friends gathered at the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club on Monday
night to celebrate the company's 40th an-
niversary in the publishing business.
The evening was arranged by staff
members from the various publications to
honor brothers Barry and Robert Wenger
and Barry's wife Jean for their years of
hard work in founding and building a suc-
cessful publishing enterprise.
During the evening, messages of
congratulations were read from local
federal and provincial members, as well as
the towns and business communities of
Wingham and Listowel.
A special guest, Bill Pratt of the Ontario
Community Newspaper Association,
presented the Wengers with plaques
honoring their years of service in the
association. He also commented on their
tradition of producing excellent community
newspapers, as evidenced by the large
number of awards their publications have
won over the years.
The employees then presented framed
reproductions of the front pages of the first
editions the company had published in Mild-
may, Wingham and Listowel.
Wenger Bros. Limited was formed in
Mildmay in 1943, when the Wengers pur-
chased the Mildmay Gazette. In 1951, Barry
and Jean Wenger moved to Wingham,
where they had purchased The Advance -
Times, and, following the sale of The
Gazette, Robert Wenger followed.
In 1968, the company expanded with the
purchase of The Listowel Banner, and
Rnbert Wenger moved to Listowel to direct
operations there. Further expansion in-
cluded the purchases in 1971 of The Mount
Forest Confederate and in 1981 of The
Milverton Sun, both now published by David
Wenger, son of Barry and Jean.
Other publications include Farming
Today and Crossroads, which cover a wide
area of midwestern Ontario.
40TH ANNIVERSARY—The 40th anniversary of Wenger Bros. Limited was
celebrated Monday evening, and Barry Wenger, /eft, president; and Robert Wenger
were congratulated by many well-wishers, including members of the Ontario Com-
munity Newspapers' Association, federal, provincial and municipal politicians, and
company employees. When the company started, the brothers operated The
Mildmay Gazette, which had a circulation of 900. Today, Wenger Bros. publications
reach thousands of readers. During the four decades,- the company has acquired The
Wingham Advance -Times, The Listowel Banner, The Mount Forest Confederate and
The Milverton Sun and launched Crossroads and Farming Today. (Banner Photo)
