And Toronto's black -tie crowd turned out in full force for the Canadian premiere of the movie about the young man who made everyone cheer and weep and gave everyone a new definition of unselfishness. Terry Fox caused little commotion the first days he began his run in Newfoun- dland; he was just a kid with big ideas. But as everyone watched him struggle and work and saw that he was really serious about his accomplishment, it was also obvious he was big in courage. By the time Terry got to Ontario, it was obvious he was running his way into the hearts of all Canadians. When he finally had to end his run near Thunder Bay and admit that cancer had again changed his future, Canada's tears flowed with the tears of the Fox family. He would be back to finish the run, he vowed, but it was not to be. And as time went on and it became evident that more than his run was over, Canadians were united in their love for this curly - headed kid who was such an inspiration. Prayers for his recovery were expressed in every corner of the country and letters poured in to express love and concern. The movie has not met with the greatest praise from critics. Some say the acting of newcomer Eric Fryer is wooden and without feeling; others say the writing is to blame. All say the scenery is fantastic and many scenes will leave an entire theatre audience in tears. Well, maybe it won't be so bad for a country to cry together. Maybe the pride we feel for this great Canadian hero will be good for us to think about, completly overshadowing the doubt and fear many of us have for the future of our country. And maybe our children and young people will learn something about sacrifice — and fight — and love and concern for others. Maybe the Terry Fox movie will make us cry - - but it will also re -instil in all of us the hope that in this country, there are other Terry Fox - type heroes who think more of others than they do of themselves. And it will unite us and make us proud that one of Canada's own is forever on film to live in history for the remainder of the world to admire.
