Where is
my ad?
Translated from Dutch
by John Martens)
In March 1946 a little girl
was born in the Netherlands.
Let's call her Brigit. Her
dad was a Canadian soldier;
let's name her Arthur, one of
the many Canadians who
liberated the Netherlands
from the Nazis.
At the time of the birth of
his daughter, Arthur was in
Canada to• obtain a divorce
from his wife. He telephoned
from far -away Canada and
in this way heard his little
daughter, his first child, cry
through the phone.
Since that time they -had
not seen each other or talked
to each other, but last sum-
mer Arthur and his daughter
fell into each other's arms.
For the first time in 36 years.
That this happy reunion
could take place was due to
the untiring efforts of Olga
Rains, a fOrmer citizen of the
Netherlands, now residing in
North Bay, Ontario.
Rains wrote a book about
the many Dutch is who
girls
married Canadian soldiers
or dated the liberators from
overseas.
The title of the book is:
"'frees en Haar Canadees"
(Eng. "Trix and Her Cana-
dian").
Olga Rains told me:
"During my research in the
matter and in the course of
collecting material for my
manuscript, I met in the
Netherlands not a few wom-
en and children of Canadians
and all had a common inter-
est; the former girlfriends of
Canadian soldiers were very
eager to know how their f'
former friends were doing
and the children wanted to
know who their fathers were.
To get acquainted with their
roots, you understand?
"The girl we referred to as
Brigit learned that her
father was a Canadian, when
she was 17. Since that day
she wanted to get to know
her dad she had never seen,
but it was impossible to trace
him.
Aided by another Dutch-
man, Klaas Van Baaren, 1
began searching myself for ,
the long -lost father.
"We succeeded in convinc-
ing a number of Canadian
officials of the need to come
to the assistance of such peo-
ple as Brigit and her mother
who lived under constant
emotional stress. Brigit's
father was quickly found.
The reunion was an emotion-
al and dramatic one and not
free of tears, the more so as
father Arthur is a very sick
man; he lives as a widower
in a• wheelchair and won't
make it long."
Olga continues: 'Bright
stayed four weeks at the
home of a relative of Arthur;
she visited him daily in hos-
pital and now plans have
been made for the next visit.
Fantastic t"e i5ilt it?"
Last summer Olga Rains
succeeded e inestablishing
s ablisbin
g
contact between a 57 year old
Dutch woman a and her form-
er Canadian sweetheart,
whom she bore a daughter.
Olga says: "A life drama!
They were so much in love,
right after the liberation, but
the girl's mother did not
want to hear of marriage or
engagement to a Canadian
soldier. She locked up her
daughter. The young -soldier
searched for his love for
weeks on end. He did not find
her and returned at long last
in deep disappointment and
heartbroken to Canada.
"Last summer I found
him, although I knew only
his first name.
"And what had happened?
It turned out that neither the
Canadian soldier, nor the
Dutch girl had ever married.
All their life their thoughts
have been only for each
other."
"The statistics show that
many Canadian soldiers,
who helped liberate the
Netherlands, are gradually
claimed by death. Most are
in the sixties or older."
That's why Olga Rains
spares no efforts to bring to-
gether again former Cana-
dian soldiers, their children
and their one-time sweet-
hearts and girlfriends in the
Netherlands.
Those who think they want
Olga's assistance, can ad-
dress her as follows: Mrs.
