Gymnastics Club The Gymnastics Club of F. E. Madill is expanding daily. To get more insight into what its members do, we sent our newest roving reporter and upcoming gymnast, Lesley tenPas, on assignment to Gym 254 to gather in- formation. The results were intriguing. Three gymnasts, Kelly Anderson, Kiiviii MMCleryand Roxanne Campbell, were interviewed about their views on the dub. All three girls agreed that lunch time is the ideal time slot to have the club, as it gives them an activity to rejuvenate them for the afternoon. They also said the club is an ideal way to meet new friends. They find it reassuring to know that when they walk through the gym they will be greeted by others with the same interests_ Said reporter Lesley: 'Many different things are accomplished in the club. New skills are learned and victory shows in every new twist or turn of their bodies. Routines bring each new movement together, forming a story. The girls performed these at the Grade 8 Orientation Night. "There are many different levels .of . achievement,.and.. each participates and contributes an important part to the club." The apparatus involved in the club consists of floor mats, uneven bars, a balance beam and the box horse_ Each piece is used to its fullest potential. Safety is drummed into the gymnasts' heads at every level. With 20 girls presently participating, we hope to see many more members, both boys andgirls, next year. —Lesley tenPas and Clint Pewtress ....6 rQ,r4+.0 ice, ,,,., .6.--0 9.49-6-4LE SPECIAL INVITATION Occas: First official twinning trip of people from Toberrnory, On with residents of Tobenmory, Scotland. The team consists of students who have volunteered to do some extra preparation for a number of contests held in the latter part of the school year. In early March, the team wrote the Mathematical As- sociation of America Con- test. Because of their high scores on this, Eddie Tam, Troy Pocaluyko and Ken Deichert wrote the American Invitational Math Examination during the March break. A total of 1822 students from 900 high schools across Canada and the United States wrote this contest. All ' three Madill candidates scored higher than the aver- age score. In April, the team wrote the Descartes Competition sponsored by the University of Waterloo. With the highest score ever attained by a Ma- dill team, it finished in sec- ond place (four points behind a team from Flesherton) in our zone consisting of the counties of Huron, Bruce, Grey, Dufferin and Perth. Out of 573 schools and 4,500 contestants from across Canada, Madill finished in 37th position. Five team members made the zone honor roll and one student, Eddie. Tam, was named to the Canadian honor roll. The team has set a stand- ard that will be very difficult to match for future Madill teams. —Mr. Neil (Coach) Athletic banquet Wednesday, June 1, was the night of the Athletic Ban- quet held at F. E. Madill. The banquet was a very well - attended event — a great success! This banquet gave both coaches and players the op- portunity to recognize out- standing athletic perform- ances by F. E. Madill stu- dents. Forty-five trophies were presented. Climaxing these presenta- tions were: the Madill Olympian Medal presented to Doug Wood; the McKib- bon Trophy awarded to Suzanne Helfenstein and Ken Deichert; Top Female Athlete for 1982-83 was Tracey MacKay and Top Male Athlete was Ken Atkin- son. Thanks are extended to all who helped with the organi- zation of the banquet, to those who prepared the cafe- teria and to students who helped with the clean up. A special appreciation is ex- tended to Donna Green for her work. —Ms. Schofield The spring formal is a great success Saturday, May 28, was the night to remember. A fan- tastic array of decorations and the tropical spring night combined to make the 1983 Spring Formal at F. E. Madill a thematic southern night! Everyone in attendance wore magnificently -styled outfits ranging from casual suits to tuxedos, and includ- ing every style of evening dress imaginable. Everything was perfect for the biggest and best dance of the year. — except that the band failed to appear. The lead singer's wife was ad- mitted to hospital, so two of the band members volun- teered to disc jockey in order that the night would not be a complete loss. This worked tremendously well' and, aside from the fact that the people received half their ticket money back or attended the formal at half price, few noticed that there use the WANT WINGHAM 357-2320 was not a band! The music was a good mix of fast and slow and some people were heard mentioning that they liked the disc jockey idea better than the band any- way! Nothing outshone the whole formal better than the speeches given by the pre- sent School Queen and Lead- er, Tracey MacKay and Kevin Coultes, and the past School Queen, Shelley Ste. Marie ( the past School Lead- er was unable to attend). Gifts were given to these people and, then, with their words of wisdom presented, Kevin and Tracey danced one dance by themselves, after which the rest joined in with them. Besides the few upsets and problems (such as balloons that never quite made the entry they were expected to make), the Formal was a huge success and was, no doubt, enjoyed by all — as was the party following, and the breakfast after that 4 right John, Darryl, Brenda, Scrim, Jennifer, Tracey, Paula, Stewart, Troy, Doug, Tami, Gerald, Andrea, Rick, Allison, Karen, Jacquie, Al, Jackie, Patty, Gayle, etc.?) —Liz Wilkins Lesley tenPas, Kelly Anderson, Lorelei Leachman, Janice King, Annette Jorrltsma, Elizabeth Sjaarda, Susan Marks, Kim McClory; front row, Beverly McLeod, Nancy Armstrong, Paula Rutherford, Stephanie Dimelow, Jane Dickson. The award was presented by Jack Kopas. Cheerleaders compete in Huron -Perth On Thursday, May 26, the cheerleaders travelled to Listowel for the Huron -Perth Cheerleading Competition. The competition was tough, with such rivals as Goderich, Clinton and South Huron. Our girls however, per- formed an excellent routine (which was later seen at the Tuesday assembly) and with what is called the "Charlotte Spectacular" pulled off a first -runner-up win, losing first place to Goderich by one point. Congratulations, girls! In the individual competition, Christine Bregman com- peted and came in second place. Congratulations, Christine! Best of luck, to next year's cheerleading team. —Ms. Joanisse (Coach) MRS. But also others see The image readiating from Its fine, delicate face. Our page is like a mirror It not only reflects Our defeats and achieve- ments, and Upcoming news and events But everyday life at Madill. As one grows and changes So does the mirror image. Reflections come and go. Other important features Are embedded in, lasting. As the year quickly draws to a close We must put The mirror down To gives its reflection A needed summer's rest. But corn September The mirror will be taken up By the old ones that have stayed And the new ones that have come. And hopefully, the reflection is just as good . . or better! —Michelle Hooftman (Editor next year) 1983-84 MEMORIES Sometimes, when the moon is high I can feel your presence and I'm not alone anymore Like a tiny breeze You encircle me comforting my troubled soul. I remember the days when you walked the earth as I do today growing, loving, and dying. You're a memory Of days in the past coming to haunt me making me feel regret and sorrow for not living life to its fullest not sharing my love with you now you are gone .. it's too late.
