than 60 years, Mrs. William
Elston of 371 Minnie Street.
Wingham, passed as

Mrs. Elston was tho r -
mer Emily Kate Austi ed
was born in Cante y,
Kent, England, on August 26,
1893, a daughter of the late
William and Emily Austin.
She received her education
in Canterbury and trained to
be a nurse.
In 1918, Mrs. Elston came
to Canada, to the Bluevale
area, with her first husband,
Bert Thomas, whom she had
married in England in 1917.
She was bereaved by his
death in 1920 and ane year
later, she married' William
Elston. She was again made
a widow when Mr. Elston
passed away in 1945.
Mrs. Elston will be fondly
remembered by many who
received her gentle care
during the several years she
worked as a nurse at
Wingham General Hospital.
She also participated in
many public service
organizations, holding
various offices in each. She
was a member of Majestic
Rebekah Lodge No. 352,
Wingham; the Ladies'
Auxiliary to the Royal
Canadian Legion, Branch
180, Wingham; the Mary
Hastings Club and the
Canadian Cancer Society.
She had been retired since
1963 and had lived on the
second line of Morris prior to
moving to Wingham.
Left to mourn their
mother's passing are three
sons, William Elston of RR 5,
Brussels, Edwin Elston, RR
1, Arva, and Bernard
Thomas, RR 4, Wingham.
She was predeceased by one
son, James Elston, in 1965.
Also surviving are three
stepchildren, Harold
Thomas of Brussels, Mac
Thomas, Innesmore, and
Lavina Mole, Ingersoll.
There are 15 grandchildren;
20 great grandchildren; two
sisters, Molly and Dorothy,
and two brothers, Bob and
Ted, all in England. She was
predeceased by a step -son,
Roy Thomas; one sister and
three brothers.
The late Mrs. Elston
rested at The Currie -Walker
Funeral Home, Wingham,
Lengthy illness ends
in death of Mrs. Holmes
Much suffering through a
lengthy illness ended on
Sunday, June 5, when Mrs.
Oscar Holmes- of- 7a John
Street East, Wingham, was
granted release at Wingham
and District Hospital. She
was in her 75th year.
The former Ethel Hazel
Richardson, Mrs. Holmes
was born in Culross Town-
ship on November 3, 1908, a
daughter of the late Walter
Richardson and his first
wife, the former Essie
Pinnell. The family later
moved to the Langside area
where she received her
elementary education. She
continued her education at
the Teeswater Continuation
School and Spotton Business
College, Wingham.
Mrs. Holmes married her
husband Oscar on October
30, 1940, in Teeswater and
they farmed in Culross
Township and Turnberry
Township until their
retirement to Wingham in
1961. He predeceased her in
1969.
Active in church and
community, Mrs. Holmes
was a member of St. An-
drew's Presbyterian Church,
the Women's Missionary
Society, Majestic Rebekah
Lodge, Wingham, the Mary
Hastings Club, the Happy
Gang senior citizens' group,
the Women's Institute and
the Second Mile Club. Her
many friends will remember
with fondness her cheerful
nature and her courage
during her long illness.
Left to mourn her passing
are her stepmother, Mrs.
Mae Richardson of Wing
ham; one sister, Mrs. Clar-
ence (Bertha) Stakes of
Ingersoll; one brother, Wal-
lace Richardson, Wingham;
one niece; two nephews and
one great nephew. She was
predeceased by one, sister,
Mrs. Mervin (Freda)
Glazier.
Rev. Paul L. Mills con-
ducted funeral service for
Mrs. Holmes on Tuesday at
one o'clock at The Currie -
Walker Funeral Home.
Interment followed in
Wingham Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Clarence
and Howard Holmes, Gordon
Wall, William Young, Ross
McCullough and Ronald
Smyth. Flower bearers were
Cameron Glazier and Wayne
Brown_
where friends paid their
respects until Tuesday, June
7, when service was con-
ducted at 2:30 by Rev. J. Rea
Grant of the Wingham
United Church where
deceased was a member. Six
grandsons carried her to her
final resting place in
Wingham Cemetery: Wayne
Elston, Douglas Thomas,
Larry Elston, Paul Elston,
Murray Elston and Gary
Elston. Floral tributes were
carried by Keith Elston,
John Elston and David
Elston.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fergu-
son of Listowel recently cele-
brated their 40th wedding
anniversary. On Friday eve-
ning, June 3 they were din-
ner guests at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Everett Spading of
Goderich. Also present were
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fergu-
son of Gorrie and Mrs.
Donald Ireland of Tees -
water. A family celebration
was held in their honor on
Sunday at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Lynn Ferguson of
Glen Williams. Dinner at the
Harop House in Milton was
enjoyed by their family
which includes Mr. and Mrs.
Lynn Ferguson and daugh-
ters Jan and Krista, Mr. and
Mrs. James Arnold of Gue-
lph and Mr. and Mrs. Blake
Ferguson of Merton. Mr.
and Mrs. Ferguson were
married on June 5, 1943 in
the Lakelet United Church
by the late Rev. A. S. True-
blood. They farmed in How -
ick Township until 1966,
when Mr. Ferguson became
employed as a Dairy Herd
Improvement supervisor
with the Ministry of Agricul-
ture and Food. They took up
residence in Gorrie in 1968.
Mr. Ferguson retired in 1980.
They now reside at 360 Wal-
lace Ave. North, Listowel.

spent the weekend with Dr.
and Mrs. Leedham and
family, Summit Drive_
Mrs. Emma Aitchison of
St. Luke's Place, Hespeler,
spent the past week with
Mrs. Jean Aitchison.
Miss Diane McLean, who
has been secretary at the
Wingham United Coop plant
for the past three years, has
accepted a position at the Co-
op headquarters in
Mississauga. She com-
menced her duties Monday.
A farewell dimmer was held at
Turnberry Tavern Thursday
evening and Diane received
several lovely gifts. Miss
Marlene Murray of Lucknow
has accepted the position as
secretary at the local Co-op.
RON STROME of Howick just failed on this try to dear 4.9 metres in the Senior
boys' high jump. However he made It on his third attempt to take the gold medal
in the event, part of the North Huron track and field meet held at Howitk Central
School last week.

was held in the Wroxeter
United Church. The parade,
led by Brussels Legion Pipe
Band,, the Blyth, Brussels

Auxiliaries, was blessed with
sunny skies.
An inspiring message was
presented by Rev. Lloyd
Martin, with Ladies' Au mil-
iary President Margaret
Galbraith reading the scrip-
ture. The choir is to be
commended for its excel-
lent music_ Comrade Roy
Renwick accompanied by
organist Mrs. Betty Wright,
presented beautiful ren-
ditions of "Precious
Memories" and "Amazing
Grace".
